  • In this paper, at first, the characteristics of double mode SAW (DMS) resonator are analysed by applying the wave guide model and coupled mode theory to 1-port resonator. The DMS resonators (2-pole), which are arranged in a close, parallel configuration of two identical 1-port resonators on a single plate, and 4-pole DMS filters are designed and fabricated at the center frequency of 150.15 MHz with 3-dB bandwidth of 80 KHz. The empirical design characteristics are obtained from the comparison of experimental and theoretical values resulted from several fabrications, and the narrow bandpass filters are implemented on the basis of the above empirical results, which can be used to mobile communication systems. A ST-cut quartz substrate is selected for the stable temperature-frequence characteristics, and high resolution photolithography is applied to the fabrication of filter to get the fine electrode patterns.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on the TiN-coated silicon substrate with different thickness of Ni and Co catalysts layer at $600^{\circ}C$ using inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). The Ni and Co catalysts were formed using the RF magnetron sputtering system with various deposition times. It was found that the growth of CNTs was strongly influenced by the surface morphology of Ni and Co catalysts. With increasing deposition time, the thickness of catalysts increased and the grain boundary size of catalysts increased. The surface morphology of catalysts and CNTs were elucidated by SEM. The Raman spectrum further confirmed the graphitic structure of the CNTs. The turn-on field of CNTs grown on Ni and Co catalysts was about 2.7V/pm and 1.9V/pm respectively. Field emission current density of CNTs grown on Ni and Co catalysts was measured as $11.67mA/cm^2$ at $5.5V/{\mu}m$ and $1.5mA/cm^2$ at $5.5V/{\mu}m$ respectively.

  • In the present study, we proposed a new numerical wave tank model to analyze the vertical tension-leg circular floating bodies, using a 2-D Navier-Stokes solver. An IBM(Immersed Boundary Method) capable of handling interactions between waves and moving structures with complex geometry on a standard regular Cartesian grid system is coupled to the VOF(Volume of Fluid) method for tracking the free surface. Present numerical results for the motions of the floating body were compared with existing experimental data as well as numerical results based on FAVOR(Fractional Area Volume Obstacle Representation) algorithm. For detailed examinations of the present model, the additional hydraulic experiments for floating motions and free surface transformations were conducted. Further, the versatility of the proposed numerical model was verified via the numerical and physical experiments for the general rectangular floating bodies. Numerical results were compared with experiments and good agreement was archived.

  • The surface runoff is one of the important components for the surface water balance. However, most Land Surface Models(LSMs), coupled to climate models at a large scale for the prediction and prevention of disasters caused by climate changes, simplistically estimate surface runoff from the soil water budget. Ignoring the role of surface flow depth on the infiltration rate causes errors in both surface and subsurface flow calculations. Therefore, for the comprehensive terrestrial water and energy cycle predictions in LSMs, a conjunctive surface-subsurface flow model at a large scale is developed by coupling a 1-D diffusion wave model for surface flow with the 3-D Volume Averaged Soil-moisture Transport(VAST) model for subsurface flow. This paper describes the new conjunctive surface-subsurface flow formulation developed for improvement of the prediction of surface runoff and spatial distribution of soil water by topography, along with basic schemes related to the terrestrial hydrologic system in Common Land Model(CLM), one of the state-of-the-art LSMs.

  • BACKGROUND: Heavy metals (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Li, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were analyzed to elucidate the impact of weir construction on their concentrations in sediments of Geum River, Korea. We also attempted to investigate the source of the heavy metals in sediments. METHODS AND RESULTS: For this study, sediments were collected from May through June in 2012. The concentrations of heavy metals except Hg were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, and Hg was measured by automatic mercury analyzer. More clay were accumulated in the furthest stations in the upstream direction starting from the weirs. Most of the heavy metals showed higher concentrations in the most upstream located station of Geumnam Weir. However, high concentrations were not observed in the most upstream stations of the other weirs. The concentrations of Hg and As were much higher in sediments of Gap Stream. CONCLUSION: Gap Stream may be a potential source for high deposits of As and Hg. Presence of the dams may not play an important role in controlling heavy metal concentrations in sediments. It is necessary to monitor heavy metal concentrations for a longer time period to study the effect of environmental changes on heavy metal distribution in Geum River.

  • In this study, the pumping performance of a piezoelectric valveless micropump is simulated. The micropump, which was developed in the previous work, is composed of a four-layer lightweight piezocomposite actuator, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pump chamber, and two diffusers. The piezoelectric domain, the fluid domain and the structural domain are coupled in the three-dimensional simulation. We used ANSYS for the piezoelectric and structural domains and ANSYS CFX for the fluid domain. The effects of driven frequency on the flow rate have been investigated by simulating the flow characteristics for 10 Hz and 40 Hz driven frequencies. The flow rates with respect to driven frequencies up to 300 Hz have been calculated.

  • The tubby mouse is characterized by progressive retinal and cochlear degeneration and late-onset obesity. These phenotypes are caused by a loss-of-function mutation in the tub gene and are shared with several human syndromes, suggesting the importance of tubby protein in central nervous system (CNS) functioning. Although evidence suggests that tubby may act as a transcription factor mediating G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling, any downstream gene regulated by tubby has yet to be identified. To explore potential target genes of tubby with region-specific transcription patterns in the brain, we performed a microarray analysis using the cerebral cortex and hypothalamus of tubby mice. We also validated the changes of gene expression level observed with the microarray analysis using real-time RT-PCR. We found that expression of erythroid differentiation factor 1 (Erdrl) and caspase 1 (Casp1) increased, while p21-activated kinase 1 (Pak1) and cholecystokinin 2 receptor (Cck2r) expression decreased in the cerebral cortex of tubby mice. In the hypothalamic region, Casp 1 was up-regulated and $\mu$-crystallin (CRYM) was down-regulated. Based on the reported functions of the differentially expressed genes, these individual or grouped genes may account for the phenotype of tubby mice. We discussed how altered expression of genes in tubby mice might be understood as the underlying mechanism behind tubby phenotypes.

  • The guarantee of the performance of the engineered barriers in a geological repository is very important for the long-term safety of disposal as well as the efficient design of the repository. Therefore, the performance of the engineered barriers under repository condition should be demonstrated by in-situ experiments conducted in an underground research laboratory. This article provides a review of the major in-situ experiments that have been carried out over the past several decades at underground research laboratories around the world to validate the performance of engineered barriers of a repository, as well as their results. In-situ experiments to study the coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical behavior of the engineered barrier system used to simulate the post-closure performance of the repository are analyzed as a priority. In addition, in-situ experiments to investigate the performance of the buffer material under a real repository environment have been reviewed. State-of-the art in-situ validations of the buffer-concrete interaction, and the installation of the buffer, backfill and plug, as well as characterization of the near-field rock and the corrosion of the canister materials are, also performed.

  • This study described the effects of RF power, DC bias voltage, chamber pressure and gas mixing ratio on the etch rates of TiN thin film and selectivity of TiN thin film to $SiO_2$ with $BCl_3$/Ar gas mixture. When the gas mixing ratio was $BCl_3$(20%)/Ar(80%) with other conditions were fixed, the maximum etch rate of TiN thin film was 170.6 nm/min. When the DC bias voltage increased from -50 V to -200 V, the etch rate of TiN thin film increased from 15 nm/min to 452 nm/min. As the RF power increased and chamber pressure decreased, the etch rate of TiN thin film showed an increasing tendency. When the gas mixing ratio was $BCl_3$(20%)/Ar(80%) under others conditions were fixed, the intensity of optical emission spectra from radical or ion such as Ar(750.4 nm), $Cl^+$(481.9 nm) and $Cl^{2+}$(460.8 nm) was highest. The TiN thin film was effectively removed by the chemically assisted physical etching in $BCl_3$/Ar ICP plasma.
