High-speed moist air or steam flow has long been of important subject in engineering and industrial applications. Of many complicated gas dynamics problems involved in moist air flows, the most challenging task is to understand the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon when the moist air rapidly expands through a flow device. Many theoretical and experimental studies using supersonic wind tunnels have devoted to the understanding of the nonequilibrium condensation flow physics so far. However, the nonequilibrium condensation can be also generated in the subsonic flows induced by the unsteady expansion waves in shock tube. The major flow physics of the nonequilibrium condensation in this application may be different from those obtained in the supersonic wind tunnels. In the current study, the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon caused by the unsteady expansion waves in a shock tube is analyzed by using the two-dimensional, unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations, which are fully coupled with a droplet growth equation. The third-order TVD MUSCL scheme is applied to solve the governing equation systems. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The time-dependent behavior of nonequilibrium condensation of moist air in shock tube is investigated in details. The results show that the major characteristics of the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon in shock tube are very different from those in the supersonic wind tunnels.

With the worldwide trend of controlling the utilization of fossil fuels inducing global climate change, many efforts will have to be made on securing a sustainable energy supply. Tidal current is a concentrated form of gravitational energy, its resource is significant, but limited locations. To effectively capture tidal current energy from the sea, a group of tidal turbines should be formed and positioned with optimal size and spacing for absorbing from multiple points. Thus, the flow field including turbines becomes a huge domain, a so-called tidal farm. It can be very convenient technically and economically if a whole turbine farm is simulated by means of actuator disc thoery. So, the analysis method using actuator discs coupled with a solution of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations is adopted for actual tidal turbines. Actuator discs have regions where similar forces imposed by actual turbines are applied to a flow. As working in group formation, turbines naturally have interaction effects on one another. Therefore, the present paper investigate the evaluation on the operating performance of tidal farm in terms of the mutual influence among turbine units with various lateral and longitudinal spacing. Authors expect that results of the present study contribute to the development of tidal farm for the future potential energy.
Of concern in the present theoretical investigation is the study of blood flow and convection-dominated diffusion processes in a model bifurcated artery under stenotic conditions. The geometry of the bifurcated arterial segment having constrictions in both the parent and its daughter arterial lumen frequently appearing in the diseased arteries causing malfunction of the cardiovascular system, is constructed mathematically with the introduction of suitable curvatures at the lateral junction and the flow divider. The streaming blood contained in the bifurcated artery is treated to be Newtonian. The flow dynamical analysis applies the two-dimensional unsteady incompressible nonlinear Wavier-Stokes equations for Newtonian fluid while the mass transport phenomenon is governed by the convection diffusion equation. The motion of the arterial wall and its effect on local fluid mechanics is, however, not ruled out from the present model. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the effects of constricted flow characteristics and the wall motion on the wall shear stress, the concentration profile and on the mass transfer. The ultimate numerical solutions of the coupled flow and diffusion processes following a radial coordinate transformation are based on an appropriate finite difference technique which attain appreciable stability in both the flow phenomena and the convection-dominated diffusion processes.

In this study, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis system has been developed in order to evaluate the turbine cascade performance with blade structural deformation effect. Relative movement of the rotor with respect to stator is reflected by modeling independent two computational domains. To consider the deformed position of rotor airfoil, dynamic moving grid method is applied. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with one equation Spalart-Allmaras and two-equation SST $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence models are solved to predict unsteady fluid dynamic loads. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method with high artificial damping is used to compute the fluid-structure interaction problem. Cascade performance evaluations for different elastic axis positions are presented and compared each other. It is importantly shown that the predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of blade can show some deviations compared to the data generally computed from rigid blade configurations and the position of elastic axis also tend to give sensitive effect.

Lock-in and drag amplification phenomena are studied for a flexible cantilever using a simplified fluid-structure interaction approach. Instead of solving the 3D domain, a simplified setup is devised, in which 2D flow problems are solved on a number of planes parallel to the wind direction and transversal to the structure. On such planes, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved to estimate the fluid action at different positions of the line-like structure. The fluid flow on each plane is coupled with the structural deformation at the corresponding position, affecting the dynamic behaviour of the system. An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach is used to take in account the deformation of the domain, and a fractional-step scheme is used to solve the fluid field. The stabilization of incompressibility and convection is achieved through orthogonal quasi-static subscales, an approach that is believed to provide a first step towards turbulence modelling. In order to model the structural problem, a special one-dimensional element for thin walled cross-section beam is implemented. The standard second-order Bossak method is used for the time integration of the structural problem.

The use of drug-eluting stents has dramatically reduced the incidence of restenosis however, much remains to be teamed about the performance of these stouts. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the design of drug-eluting stents influences the efficacy of local drug delivery to the arterial wall and that this effect depends on both arterial geometry and the prevailing flow conditions. We performed computational simulations in which the coupled Navier-Stokes and advection-diffusion equations were solved to determine the flow field and drug concentration in the vicinity of model drug-eluting stouts It is found that the characteristics of flow phenomena can be influenced greatly by the ratio of stent diameter to vessel diameter. The presence of drug-eluting stent may have profound effect on wall shear stresses, recirculation sizes and drug distributions. The results show that recirculation zone is influenced by the imposed flow conditions and stent diameter. In pulsatile flow, the low wall shear stress and high drug concentration occur along the arterial wall during the decelerating flow conditions. These results could provide the guideline for future drug-eluting stent designs toward reducing restenosis by affecting local wall shear stress distributions associated with neointimal hyperplasia.
Conjugate heat transfer of an automotive oil cooler with offset-strip fins was numerically investigated to predict the performance of the oil cooler for various flow-rates. The simulations were conducted by directly modeling offset-strip fins with unstructured meshes. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were used for the present simulations. Heat transfer characteristics of the oil cooler was compared well with experimental results and the errors were approximately within 5 percents. It was found that the performance of the oil cooler increased as the flow-rate increased up to the flow-rate of 12 L/min, but the performance seemed to be saturated beyond a critical flow-rate, which was estimated as 15 L/min. Furthermore, it was confirmed that compared to the performance without fins, that of the oil cooler with offset-strip fins was increased by about 75 percents.

A flow control on airfoil installed a vortex cell for high efficiency wind turbine blade in stationary and dynamic stall conditions have been numerically investigated by solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical scheme is based on a node-based finite-volume method with Roe's flux-difference splitting and an implicit time-integration method coupled with dual time step sub-iteration. The computed result for the airfoil in the stationary showed that lift-drag ratio increases due to low pressure by the vortex cell. The oscillating airfoil with the vortex cell showed that the magnitude of hysteresis loop is reduced due to the enhanced vortex in the cell.
In the present work, a 3D numerical model is proposed to study local scouring around single vertical piers with different cross-section shapes under steady-current flow. The model solves the flow field and sediment transport processes using a coupled approach. The flow field is obtained by solving the Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations in combination with the k-ω SST turbulence closure model and the sediment transport is considered using both bedload and suspended load models. The proposed model is validated against the empirical measurements of local scour around single vertical piers with circular, square, and diamond cross-section shapes obtained from the literature. The measurement of scour depth in equilibrium condition for the simulations reveal the differences of 4.6%, 6.7% and 13.1% from the experimental measurements for the circular, square, and diamond pier cases, respectively. The model displayed a remarkable performance in the prediction of scour around circular and square piers where horseshoe vortices (HSVs) have a leading impact on scour progression. On the other hand, the maximum deviation was found in the case of the diamond pier where HSVs are weak and have minimum impact on the formation of local scour. Overall, the results confirm that the prediction capability of the present model is almost independent of the strength of the formed HSVs and pier cross-section shapes.
This paper studies the particularities of the forced vibration of the hydro-elastic system consisting of a moving elastic plate, compressible viscous fluid and rigid wall. This study is made by employing the discrete-analytical solution method proposed in the paper by the authors (Akbarov and Panakhli (2015)). It is assumed that in the initial state the fluid flow is caused by the axial movement of the plate and the additional lineally-located time-harmonic forces act on the plate and these forces cause additional flow field in the fluid and a stress-strain state in the plate. The stress-strain state in the plate is described by utilizing the exact equations and relations of the linear elastodynamics. However, the additional fluid flow field is described with linearized Navier-Stokes equations for a compressible viscous fluid. Numerical results related to the influence of the problem parameters on the frequency response of the normal stress acting on the plate fluid interface plane and fluid flow velocity on this plane are presented and discussed. In this discussion, attention is focused on the influence of the initial plate axial moving velocity on these responses. At the same, it is established that as a result of the plate moving a resonance type of phenomenon can take place under forced vibration of the system. Moreover, numerical results regarding the influence of the fluid compressibility on these responses are also presented and discussed.
