Connection of adjacent buildings with stiff links is an efficient approach for seismic pounding mitigation. However, use of highly rigid links might alter the torsional response in asymmetric plans and although this was mentioned in the literature, no quantitative study has been done before to investigate the condition numerically. In this paper, the effect of rigid coupling on the elastic lateral-torsional response of two adjacent one-story column-type buildings has been studied by comparison to uncoupled structures. Three cases are considered, including two similar asymmetric structures, two adjacent asymmetric structures with different dynamic properties and a symmetric system adjacent to an adjacent asymmetric one. After an acceptable validation against the actual earthquake, the traditional random vibration method has been utilized for dynamic analysis under Ideal white noise input. Results demonstrate that rigid coupling may increase or decrease the rotational response, depending on eccentricities, torsional-to-lateral stiffness ratios and relative uncoupled lateral stiffness of adjacent buildings. Results are also discussed for the case of using identical cross section for all columns supporting eachplan. In contrast to symmetric systems, base shear increase in the stiffer building may be avoided when the buildings lateral stiffness ratio is less than 2. However, the eccentricity increases the rotation of the plans for high rotational stiffness of the buildings.
The sealed, tuned liquid column gas damper (TLCGD) with gas-spring effect extends the frequency range of application up to about 5 Hz and efficiently increases the modal structural damping. In this paper the influence of several TLCGDs to reduce coupled translational and rotational vibrations of plan-asymmetric buildings under wind or seismic loads is investigated. The locations of the modal centers of velocity of rigidly assumed floors are crucial to select the design and the optimal position of the liquid absorbers. TLCGD's dynamics can be derived in detail using the extended non-stationary Bernoulli's equation for moving reference systems. Modal tuning of the TLCGD renders the optimal parameters by means of a geometrical transformation and in analogy to the classical tuned mass damper (TMD). Subsequently, fine-tuning is conveniently performed in the state space domain. Numerical simulations illustrate a significant reduction of the vibrations of plan-asymmetric buildings by the proposed TLCGDs.
Buildings receive solar radiation through windows and the solar radiation helps to save heating energy in winter. Therefore the bigger the glazing ratio is, the larger the amount of solar radiation we can receive. In this study we analysed the glazing ratio of Certified Green Building Apartments. And we verified whether the glazing ratio reflects energy saving through accepting solar radiation with correlation analysis. For glazing ratio analysis, we selected 116 apartment buildings of 19 apartment complexes that certified in 2008-2009 and took pictures of outside windows of the buildings. After that, we analysed the building's glazing ratio with 4 azimuth and checked distinction of the glazing ratio between 6 coupled azimuths. And we analysed the correlation between importance order of azimuth for energy saving and the glazing ratio change with the azimuth. The analysis showed that the glazing ratio does not reflect energy saving through accepting solar radiation.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the coupled effect of SSI and pounding on dynamic responses of unequal height adjacent buildings with insufficiently separation distance subjected to seismic loading. Numerical investigations were conducted to evaluate effect of the pounding coupling SSI on a Reinforced Concrete Frame Structure system constructed on different soil fields. Adjacent buildings with unequal height, including a 9-storey and a 3-storey reinforced concrete structure, were considered in numerical studies. Pounding force response, time-history and root-mean-square (RMS) of displacement and acceleration with different types of soil and separations were presented. The numerical results indicate that insufficient separation could lead to collisions and generate severe pounding force which could result in acceleration and displacement amplifications. SSI has significant influence of the seismic response of the structures, and higher pounding force were induced by floors with stiffer soil. SSI is reasonable neglected for a structure with a dense soil foundation, whereas SSI should be taken into consideration for dynamic analysis, especially for soft soil base.
This study proposed hybrid coupled shear wall in the steel plate insertion method, which is capable of reinforcing the shear strength of the entire wall without increasing wall thickness in the wall-slab apartment buildings. The proposed hybrid coupled shear wall was tested for its effectiveness, shear strength and seismic behavior in experiment. As a test result, the shear strength improvement by the proposed hybrid coupled shear was found effective. Integral-type of steel plate insertion was found more effective than separate-type steel plate insertion. In this case, if the stud enforcement method proposed in this study was used, the shear strength of hybrid coupled shear wall was recommended to calculate using the KBC2016 0709.4.1(3) method. The steel plate inserted in the proposed method was found to have no significant impact on the final fracture behavior and bending strength of hybrid coupled shear wall. The shear strength at the final destruction of the wall was merely about 1/50 of the entire design shear strength. Thus, it is deemed that the wall was over excessively designed regarding the shear force in the existing design method. This finding indicates further study on wall designing to ensure effective and economic designing based on appropriate strength estimation under the destruction mechanism.

Since a ductile coupled shear wall system is the primary seismic load resisting systems of many structures, a coupling beams of these system must exhibit excellent ductility and energy absorption capacity. In this paper, the seismic response of coupled shear wall system is discussed. The cyclic response of steel coupling beams embedded into reinforced concrete boundary elements was studied. Three half-scale subassemblies representing a portion of a prototype structure were designed. constructed, and tested. The main test variables were the connection details of hybrid coupled shear wall. These efforts have resulted in details for increasing the seismic capacity of steel coupling beam in the seismic behavior of buildings.
A new type of earthquake resilient reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall structure, installed with replaceable coupling beams and replaceable corner components at the bottom of wall piers, is proposed in this study. At first, the mechanical behavior of replaceable components, such as combined dampers and replaceable corner component, is studied by cyclic loading tests on them. Then, cycling loading tests are conducted on one conventional coupled shear wall and one new type of coupled shear wall with replaceable components. The test results indicate that the damage of the new type of coupled shear wall concentrates on replaceable components and the left parts are well protected. Finally, a case study is introduced. The responses of one conventional frame-tube structure and one new type of structure installed with replaceable components under the wind and the earthquake are compared, which verify that the performance of new type of structure is much better than the conventional structure.

In this paper, a multi-agent control system for DC-coupled photovoltaic (PV), fuel cell (FC), ultracapacitor(UC) and battery hybrid power system is studied for commercial buildings & apartment buildings microgrid. In this proposed system, the PV system provides electric energy to the electrolyzer to produce hydrogen for future use and transfer to the load side, if possible. Whenever the PV system cannot completely meet load demands, the FC system provides power to meet the remaining load. A multi-agent system based-power management and control algorithm is proposed for the hybrid power system by taking into account the characteristics of each power source. The main works of this paper are hybridization of alternate energy sources with FC systems using long and short storage strategies to build the multi-agent control system with pragmatic design, and a dynamic model proposed for a PV/FC/UC/battery bank hybrid power generation system. A dynamic simulation model for the hybrid power system has been developed using Matlab/Simulink, SimPowerSystems and Stateflow. Simulation results are also presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-agent control and management system for building microgrid.

In high-density high-rise cities such as Hong Kong, buildings account for nearly 90% of energy consumption and 61% of carbon emissions. Therefore, it is important to study the design of buildings, especially high-rise buildings, to achieve lower carbon emissions in the city. The carbon emissions of a building consist of embodied carbon from the production of construction materials and operational carbon from energy consumption during daily operation (e.g., air-conditioning and lighting). An integrated analysis of both types of carbon emissions can strengthen the design of low carbon buildings, but most of the previous studies concentrated mainly on either embodied or operational carbon. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to develop a holistic methodology framework considering both embodied and operational carbon, in order to enhance the sustainable design of low carbon high-rise buildings. The framework will be based on the building information modeling (BIM) technology because BIM can be integrated with simulation systems and digital models of different disciplines, thereby enabling a holistic design and assessment of low carbon buildings. Structural analysis program is first coupled with BIM to validate the structural performance of a building design. The amounts of construction materials and embodied carbon are then quantified by a BIM-based program using the Dynamo programming interface. Operational carbon is quantified by energy simulation software based on the green building extensible Markup Language (gbXML) file from BIM. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) will be applied to analyze the ambient wind effect on indoor temperature and operational carbon. The BIM-based framework serves as a decision support tool to compare and explore more environmentally-sustainable design options to help reduce the carbon emissions in buildings.

In high multistory buildings, hybrid coupled shear walls can provide an efficient structural system to resist horizontal force due to wind and seismic loads. Hybrid coupled shear walls are usually built over the whole height of the building and are laid out either as a series of walls coupled by steel beams with openings to accommodate doors, elevator walls, windows and corridors. In this paper, the behavior characteristics of hybrid coupled shear wall system considering connection details is examined through results of an experimental research program where 5 two-thirds scale specimens were tested under cyclic loading. Such connections details are typically employed in hybrid coupling wall system consisting of steel coupling beams and reinforced concrete shear wall. The test variables of this study are embedment length of steel coupling beam and wall thickness of concrete shear wall. The results and discussion presented in this paper provide fundamental data for seismic behavior of hybrid coupled shear wall systems.
