Performance improvement of countercurrent-flow membrane gas absorption in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor

  • The theoretical membrane gas absorption module treatments in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor using Happel's free surface model were obtained under countercurrent-flow operations. The analytical solutions were obtained using the separated variable method with an orthogonal expansion technique extended in power series. The $CO_2$ concentration in the liquid absorbent, total absorption rate and absorption efficiency were calculated theoretically and experimentally with the liquid absorbent flow rate, gas feed flow rate and initial $CO_2$ concentration in the gas feed as parameters. The improvements in device performance under countercurrent-flow operations to increase the absorption efficiency in a carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas feed mixture using a pure water liquid absorbent were achieved and compared with those in the concurrent-flow operation. Both good qualitative and quantitative agreements were achieved between the experimental results and theoretical predictions for countercurrent flow in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor with accuracy of $6.62{\times}10^{-2}{\leq}E{\leq}8.98{\times}10^{-2}$.

Yield Comparisons of Different Methods of Waxy Fraction Extraction from Grain Sorghum

  • Three solvent extraction techniques were used to recover waxy tractions from grain sorghum kernels. Yield and chemical composition of the waxy tractions obtained by reflux, bench scale (recirculated solvent), and countercurrent extraction methods were compared. Waxy traction yield from countercurrent extraction (0.200%) was significantly greater (p<0.05) than the yields of wax from both reflux (0.184%) and bench-scale (0.179%) methods. The waxy traction extracted using the bench-scale method showed the greatest relative amount of long-chained (primarily C:28 and C:30) alcohols while the countercurrent-extracted wax showed the greatest relative amount of long-chained fatty acids and fatty aldehydes. Countercurrent extraction removed a higher additive percentage of fatty aldehydes, acids, and alcohols than reflux or bench-scale extraction method.

협소 사각유로에서 공기-물 대향류 유동한계 (Air-water Countercurrent Flow Limitation in Narrow Rectangular Channels)

  • An experimental study on the countercurrent two-phase flow in narrow rectangular channels has been peformed. Countercurrent flow limitation (CCFL) was investigated using air and water in 760mm long, 100mm wide, vertical test sections with 1 and 3mm channel gaps. Tests were systematically performed with downward liquid superficial velocities and upward gas velocities covering 0 to 0.125 and 0 to 3.5m/s ranges, respectively. As the gap width of rectangular channel increased the CCFL water superficial velocity decreased for the given air superficial velocity. Slight increase of the air superficial velocity resulted in the abrupt decrease of water velocity when $j_g=2{\sim}4m/s$. The critical superficial velocity of air, at which the downward flow of water was no longer allowed, also decreased with the increase of gap width. The experimental results were compared with the previous correlations, which were mainly for round tubes, and the qualitative trends were found to be partially acceptable. However the quantitative discrepancies were hardly neglected. New correlation of CCFL was developed and showed good agreement with the experimental data.

High-speed countercurrent chromatography를 이용한 인삼 saponin의 대량 분리 농축 (Preparative Isolation of Ginseng Saponin from Panax ginseng Root Using High-speed Countercurrent Chromatography)

  • 이상계 용매시스템을 이용하여 물질을 고순도로 대량 분리 할 수 있는 기술인 countercurrent chromatography를 이용하여 인삼으로부터 생리황성 성분인 saponin을 대량 분리 농축하였다. 용매 조성별 인삼 saponin의 분배계수에 따른 인삼 saponin 분리에 적합한 용매시스템은 chloroform/methanol/water(40/39/21, v/v/v)으로 결정되었으며 HSCCC의 작동 조건은 chloroform/methanol/water 용매시스템의 하층부를 이동상으로 한 head to tail mode에서 이동상의 유속 5mL/min, 인삼추출물 injection량 $200{\mu}L$, 컬럼회전속도 800 rpm의 조건이 적합한 것으로 판단되었다. 이러한 조건하에서 분리된 인삼saponin의 양은 $550.7{\mu}g$으로 HSCCC에 주입한 인삼 추출물 $200{\mu}L$중에 존재하는 총 saponin의 양 $865.5{\mu}g$에 비교하여 전체 수율은 63.6%로 나타났으며 TLC로 각 분획의 순도를 확인할 수 있었다.

On the Subtropical Countercurrent in the Western North Pacific

  • Recent dynamic computations of zonal flow and analysis of oceanographic data of CSK in winter indicate year-to year variations in the location and dynmic structure of the Subtropic Countercurrent in the western North Pacific. In January 1966, the Subtropical Countercurrent migrated southward to 21$^{\circ}$- 22$^{\circ}$N Lat in association with the subsurface Subtropical Convergence. At the area of 25$^{\circ}$- 26$^{\circ}$N Lat, another surface thermal front was formed along which a stronger eastward flow of approximately 0.4kt is seen. On the section of 142$^{\circ}$E Long in January 1967, eastward flow appears at every interval of 2$^{\circ}$latitude in the northern waters of 20$^{\circ}$N Lat.

Isolation of Fucosterol from Pelvetia siliquosa by High-speed Countercurrent Chromatography

  • We report here the use of high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) in the preparative isolation and purification of the bioactive component, fucosterol, from Pelvetia siliquosa. A crude extract was obtained by ultrasonic extraction of powdered P. siliquosa using methylene chloride and was then subjected to separation and purification by HSCCC, coupled with evaporative light-scattering detection. Preparative HSCCC was performed successfully using a two-phase solvent system, n-heptane:methanol (3:2, v/v), to obtain 10.96 mg fucosterol with 96.8% purity from 50 mg of crude extract; the recovery rate was approximately 90.5%.

소변 농축 기전과 요소운반체 (Urine Concentrating Mechanism and Urea Transporters)

  • The production of concentrated urine is achieved by countercurrent multiplication in the renal medulla. The single effect of the outer medulla is the active NaCl reabsorption in the thick ascending limb, while the single effect of the inner medulla is the passive efflux of NaCl through the thin ascending limb. The passive mechanism in the inner medulla requires a high interstitial urea concentration which is maintained by intrarenal recycling of urea. During the past decade, many transport proteins involved in the urine concentrating mechanism have been cloned, which has enabled us to understand the countercurrent multiplication mechanism on a molecular basis. This review will summarize the locations and functions of the renal medullary transport proteins, and the recent insights that have been acquired into the long term regulation of urea transporters.

Efficient Isolation of Dihydrophaseic acid 3'-O-β-D-Glucopyranoside from Nelumbo nucifera Seeds Using High-performance Countercurrent Chromatography and Reverse-phased High-performance Liquid Chromatography

  • High-performance countercurrent chromatography (HPCCC) coupled with reversed-phase highperformance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method was developed to isolate dihydrophaseic acid 3'-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (DHPAG) from the extract of Nelumbo nucifera seeds. Enriched DHPAG sample (2.3 g) was separated by HPCCC using ethyl acetate/n-butanol/water system (6:4:10, v/v/v, normal-phase mode, flow rate: 4.0 mL/min) to give 23.1 mg of DHPAG with purity of 88.7%. Further preparative RP-HPLC experiment gave pure DHPAG (16.3 mg, purity > 98%). The current study demonstrates that utilization of CCC method maximizes the isolation efficiency compared with that of solid-based conventional column chromatography.

  • To predict the average liquid level under the condition of the countercurrent stratified two-phase flow in a pipe, an analytical model has been suggested. This is made by introducing the interfacial level gradient into the liquid-phase and the gas-phase momentum equations. The analytical method for the gas-phase pressure drop calculation with f$_i$ $\neq$ f$_G$ has also been described using the liquid level prediction model developed in the present study.

  • 배기가스로부터 폴리이서술폰 분리막을 이용하여 이산화탄소 분리 특성을 수치해석 방법으로 분석하였다. 공급 기체와 투과 기체가 서로 다른 방향으로 흐르는 향류 흐름 시스템에 대한 분리막 공정 지배 방정식을 유한 차분법으로 전개하였으며 Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6 소프트웨어를 이용 공정 모사하였다. 개발된 프로그램을 사용하여 수치해석을 수행한 결과 이산화탄소 투과특성에 영향을 주는 가장 중요한 인자로는 이산화탄소 투과 구동력과 체류시간임을 알 수 있었다. 동일한 조건에서 향류 흐름 공정모사에 의한 투과 측 이산화탄소 농도와 투과량은 병류 흐름 공정모사 결과보다 소폭 증가함을 확인하였다.
