  • Laminitis is a common horse disease that causes pain and disability. One of the major causes of laminitis is carbohydrate overload, which leads to the overgrowth of gram-positive bacteria and subsequent toxemia. This study was performed to establish an experimental model of acute phase laminitis. A horse was fed with a bolus dose of oligofructose, examined for clinical signs and blood parameters, and euthanized for necropsy and histopathology. After administration, the horse exhibited clinical signs including watery feces, inappetence, severe lameness, pyrexia and tachycardia. Complete blood count showed increased hematocrit, lymphocytosis and neutropenia. Serum chemistry revealed hyperglycemia, hyperproteinemia, high level of glutamic oxalate transaminase, creatinine, uric acid and mild hyponatremia. Histologically, the lamina tissue was edematous with mild infiltration of inflammatory cells. These findings indicate that oligofructose-induced laminitis in horse is an appropriate model for studying pathogenesis of acute phase laminitis.

  • The Dexamethasone (DEX) loaded chitosan microspheres were prepared by thermal denaturation and chemical cross-linking method using a dierent concentration of glutaraldehyde as chemical cross-linking agent. The prepared microspheres were evaluated for the percentage of Drug Loading (DL), Encapsulation Efficiency (EE) and surface morphology by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). DL and EE were found to be maximum range of 10.0 to 10.79 % and 58.19 to 64.73 % respectively. The SEM Photographs of the resultant microspheres exhibited fairly smooth surfaces and predominantly spherical in appearance. In addition, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) shown that there was no interaction between the drug and polymer. In vitro and in vivo release studies revealed that the release of dexamethasone was sustained and extended up to 63 days and effectively controlled by the extent of cross-linking agent. Non-clinical parameters such as paw volume, hematological parameters like Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), Paced Cell Volume (PCV), Total Leucocytes Count (TLC), Hemoglobin (Hb), Differential Cell Count (DCC) were investigated in Fruend's Complete Adjuvant (FCA) induced arthritic rats. Radiology and histopathological studies were also performed in order to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of the DEX-loaded microspheres in extenuating the rat arthritic model.

  • This paper aims to analyze the accident based on changing patterns of traffic culture index. For this purpose, this paper particularly focuses on classifying the traffic culture patterns and developing the traffic accidents using panel count data model. The main results are as follows. First, the traffic culture patterns are divided into 'increasing', 'decreasing' and 'other' patterns. The null hypotheses that the number of accident are the same over patterns are rejected. Second, 4 fixed effect negative binomial models which are all statistically significant are developed. Third, the regions with 'increasing' pattern are analyzed to be mostly the counties, and to demand the traffic law enforcement. Fourth, the regions with 'decreasing' pattern are evaluated to be mainly the districts and to require such the traffic culture as turn signal usage. Finally, the regions with 'other' pattern are analyzed to be mostly the cities and to ask for enhancing the level of traffic culture.

  • Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 plays an important role in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma. Neovastat, having significant antitumor and antimetastatic properties, is classified as a naturally occurring multifunctional antiangiogenic agent. We evaluated the therapeutic effect of Neovastat on airway inflammation in a mouse model of asthma. BALB/c mice were immunized subcutaneously with ovalbumin (OVA) on days 0, 7, 14, and 21 and challenged with inhaled OVA on days 26, 29, and 31. Neovastat was administrated by gavage (5 mg/kg body weight) three times with 12 h intervals, beginning 30 min before OVA inhalation. On day 32, mice were challenged with inhaled methacholine, and enhanced pause (Penh) was measured as an index of airway hyperresponsiveness. The severity of airway inflammation was determined by differential cell count of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. The MMP-9 concentration in BAL fluid samples was measured by ELISA, and MMP-9 activity was measured by zymography. The untreated asthma group showed an increased inflammatory cell count in BAL fluid and Penh value compared with the normal control group. Mice treated with Neovastat had significantly reduced Penh values and inflammatory cell counts in BAL fluid compared with untreated asthmatic mice. Furthermore, mice treated with Neovastat showed significantly reduced MMP-9 concentrations and activity in BAL fluid. These results demonstrate that Neovastat might have new therapeutic potential for airway asthmatic inflammation.

  • Latent class models (LCM) are useful tools to draw hidden information from categorical data. This model can also be interpreted as a mixture model with multinomial component distributions. In some cases, however, an available dataset may contain both categorical and count or continuous data. For such cases, we can extend the LCM to a mixture model with both multinomial and other component distributions such as normal and Poisson distributions. In this paper, we consider a LCM for the data containing categorical and count data to analyze the Drug Review dataset which contains categorical responses and text review. From this data analysis, we show that we can obtain more specific hidden inforamtion than those from the LCM only with categorical responses.

  • We consider the problem of modeling count data where the observation period is determined by the survival time of the individual under study. We assume random effects or frailty model to allow for a possible association between the death times and the counts. We assume that, given a random effect, the death times follow a Weibull distribution with a rate that depends on some covariates. For the counts, given the random effect, a Poisson process is assumed with the intensity depending on time and the covariates. A gamma model is assumed for the random effect. Maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters are obtained. The model is applied to data set of patients with breast cancer who received a bone marrow transplant. A model for the time to death and the number of supportive transfusions a patient received is constructed and consequences of the model are examined.

  • This paper presents the design of Rijndael crypto-processor with 128 bits, 192 bits and 256 bits key size. In October 2000 Rijndael cryptographic algorithm is selected as AES(Advanced Encryption Standard) by NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology). Rijndael algorithm is strong in any known attacks. And it can be efficiently implemented in both hardware and software. We implement Rijndael algorithm in hardware, because hardware implementation gives more fast encryptioN/decryption speed and more physically secure. We implemented Rijndael algorithm for 128 bits, 192 bits and 256 bits key size with VHDL, synthesized with Synopsys, and simulated with ModelSim. This crypto-processor is implemented using on-the-fly key generation method and using lookup table for S-box/SI-box. And the order of Inverse Shift Row operation and Inverse Substitution operation is exchanged in decryption round operation of Rijndael algorithm. It brings about decrease of the total gate count. Crypto-processor implemented in these methods is applied to mobile systems and smart cards, because it has moderate gate count and high speed.

  • The quality prediction of the semiconductor industry has been widely recognized as important and critical for quality improvement and productivity enhancement. The main objective of this paper is to predict the final quality of semiconductor chips based on fail bit count information obtained from probe tests. Our proposed method consists of solving the data imbalance problem, non-parametric variable selection, and adjusting the parameters of the model. We demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of the proposed procedure using a real data from a semiconductor manufacturing.

  • The five space density distribution D(z) wish distance perpendicular to the Galactic plane were combined. The scale heights and the local densities at z = 0 of the thin disk, thick disk, and the halo components were estimated from the nonlinear least square fits of exponential law. The scale heights of the thin disk, thick disk, and the halo components were estimated to be $260{\pm}90$ pc, $660{\pm}220$ pc, and $3.6{\pm}1.4$ kpc, respectively. The density ratio of each components to the thin disk component at the galactic plane, i.e., z = 0.0, were also derived as 1 :0.07:0.002. Our model fit suggests that the thick disk component has a local density of 6.9% relative to the thin disk.

  • The aim of this study is to estimate the seroconversion date of the human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infection for the HIV infected patients in Korea. Data are collected from two cohorts. The first cohort is a group of "seroprevalent" patients who were seropositive and AIDS-free at entry. The other is a group of "seroincident" patients who were initially seronegative but later converted to HIV antibody-positive. The seroconversion dates of the seroincident cohort are available while those of the seroprevalent cohort are not. Estimation of seroconversion date is important because it can be used to calculate the incubation period of AIDS which is defined as the elapsed time between the HIV infection and the development of AIDS. In this paper, a Weibull regression model Is fitted for the seroincident cohort using information about the elapsed time since seroconversion and the CD4$^{+}$ cell count. The seroconversion dates for the seroprevalent cohort are imputed on the basis of the marker of maturity of HIV infection percent of CD4$^{+}$cell count.unt.
