  • Because of their high out-of-plane and in-planes strength, trapezoidally corrugated plates have been increasingly used in buildings and bridges. If corrugated plates are used as the web of plate girders or prestressed concrete box girders, the flanges take most of the bending stress. On the other hand, the corrugated plate web supports shear stress due to the accordion effect. The corrugated plate web could fail by three different buckling modes: global, local, or interactive shear buckling. To determine the effects of geometric parameters on the buckling capacity of the corrugated plates, a parametric study was performed using finite dement method. The analysis results showed that the buckling capacity and modes depend on individual parameters as well as combinations of parameters.

  • A novel flat steel plate-concrete-corrugated steel plate (FS-C-CS) sandwich panel was proposed for resisting impact load. The failure mode, impact force and displacement response of the FS-C-CS panel under impact loading were studied via drop-weight impact tests. The combined global flexure and local indentation deformation mode of the FS-C-CS panel was observed, and three stages of impact process were identified. Moreover, the effects of corrugated plate height and steel plate thickness on the impact responses of the FS-C-CS panels were quantitatively analysed, and the impact resistant performance of the FS-C-CS panel was found to be generally improved on increasing corrugated plate height and thickness in terms of smaller deformation as well as larger impact force and post-peak mean force. The Finite Element (FE) model of the FS-C-CS panel under impact loading was established to predict its dynamic response and further reveal its failure mode and impact energy dissipation mechanism. The numerical results indicated that the concrete core and corrugated steel plate dissipated the majority of impact energy. In addition, employing end plates and high strength bolts as shear connectors could prevent the slip between steel plates and concrete core and assure the full composite action of the FS-C-CS panel.

  • In this paper, an electrostatic plate resonator with four corrugated bridges and another with four flat ones have been fabricated and tested by the electrostatic actuation. The resonators consist of one rigid plate and four bridges. Boron diffusion process and anisotropic etch process with EPW are mainly used to fabricate the resonators. The dynamic characteristics of the fabricated resonators are obtained by measuring the velocity of the center of the rigid plate using a laser vibrometer. The results show that the deflection of the resonator with the corrugated bridges is larger than the resonator with the flat ones. It has been confirmed that the corrugated structure releases the residual tensile stress in the bridges resulted from the diffusion process.

  • This paper deals with the characteristics of deformation of the underground corrugated steel plate culverts constructed in the areas where the minimum depth of within 1.5 m soil cover is not secured in the bottom of highways. The underground corrugated steel plate culverts at shallow depth are often designed and constructed with the consideration of the minimum depth of soil cover according to the design standards, which was made in order to minimize any deformation. Additionally, if under unfavorable conditions, slabs are set up for stress relaxation to disperse and minimize the weight of loads transferred to the corrugated steel plate culverts. Nevertheless, if the underground corrugated steel plate culverts are built in areas where the minimum depth of soil cover inevitably cannot be secured, there may occur some deformation. In this paper, a research was carried out to identify the characteristics of deformation in areas where the minimum depth of soil cover is not secured. The result shows that there existed the deterioration of pavement and in its smoothness around the corners of slabs for stress relaxation. To this end, this paper studied the structural stability of the underground corrugated steel plate culverts established in the areas with no minimum depth of soil cover secured, with the consideration of causes and solutions of pavement deterioration.

  • Deep corrugated steel plate structure has more compressive force and flexibility in bending behavior than short span structure. Asymmetric earth pressure distribution has occurred during construction. Ultimate strength and moment in domestic area, having superior ability at bending strain has been examined in this study. Based on the result of the study preceded, performance of Deep corrugated steel plate specimen has been evaluated by comparing increase of strength according to the increase of reinforcement content in bolt connections and failure mode of specimen.

  • Most tunnel lining material which has been used in the domestic is a concrete. But many problems as the construction period, the cost, and the crack occurrence for the design, construction, and management were happened in the concrete lining. For this reason, many research institutes like the Korea Highway Corporation recognize the necessity of an alternate material development and grow on the interest for that. So in this study, the seismic behaviour characteristics for the application of the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining in cut-and-cover tunnel are evaluated as several conditions for the backfill height, the cutting slope, and the relative density of backfill soil are changed. The compressive stress which is calculated in the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining by the seismic load is decreased as the backfill height increases and the cut slope grows gentle. Also, the moment shows the tendency of decrease according to the increase of the backfill height. But in the case of the relative density of the backfill soil is small, the moment increases according to the increase of the backfill height and affects the dynamic behaviour characteristic. So it is considered that the relative density of the backfill soil is also the important point. As the result in analyzing the seismic response characteristics of the reinforcement spacing of the Corrugated Steel Plate, the variation in the compressive force is hardly happened, but the moment and the shear force increase on the reinforcement spacing being narrow.

  • This paper conducted a comparative analysis of the shear buckling characteristics of trapezoidal and sinusoidal corrugated steel plates considering of their initial imperfection. Initial imperfection refers to the state where the shape of the corrugated plate is initially not perfect. As such, an initially imperfect shape was assumed using the eigen buckling mode. To calculate the buckling stress of corrugated steel plates, the linear buckling analysis used a boundary condition which was applied to the plate buckling analysis. For the comparison of trapezoidal and sinusoidal corrugation, the shape parameters were assumed using the case where the length and slope of each corrugation were the same, and the initial imperfection was considered to be from 0.1% to 5% based on the length of the steel plate. Here, for the buckling analysis, ANSYS, a commercial FEA program, was used. From the results of buckling analysis, the effect of overall initial imperfection showed that the larger the initial imperfection, the lower the buckling stress. However, in the very thin model, interaction or local buckling was dominant in the perfect shape, and in this case, the buckling stress did not decrease. Besides, the sinusoidal model showed higher buckling stress than the trapezoidal one, and the two corrugation shapes decreased in a similar way.

  • Trapezoidal corrugated plates are often treated as orthotropic plates to simplify the modelling of the corrugation. However, this simplification is not valid at high frequencies in which the localized vibration within the parts of corrugation takes place. In this study, the vibrational and acoustical characteristics of corrugated plates are investigated up to high frequencies by means of the wavenumber domain numerical approach. Based on the findings from this numerical analysis, an approximate method to predict vibro-acoustic characteristics of corrugated plates is proposed. This approximate model consists of four equivalent plates which can represent global and local behaviours of corrugated plates. The radiation efficiency of corrugated plates is predicted from the approximate model and validated through the comparison with those of the numerical method.

  • Sound insulation performance is investigated on the corrugated panel used for a rail way vehicle. Random incidence sound transmission loss is calculated by using the equivalent orthotropic plate model. Analysis results on several kinds of corrugated panels are in good agreement with the measured data. The analysis method is applied to predict the sound transmission loss of the corrugated panel used for Korean high speed train.
