  • To study the corrosion fatigue begavior of T.M.C.P. steel, the rotary bending fatigue test with the change of concentration of NaCl solution was carried out. Fatigue life in the corrosion environment is decreased markedly in comparision with that in the air. Fatigue limit in the air was about 225 MPa. In case of 3.5% NaCl solution fatigue life could be expressed as .sigma./sub f/=10,392 * (N/sub f/)/sup -o.2923 . According to the paris's rule, crack growth rates could be expressed as da/dN=2.62.*10/sup -7/ .DELTA. K/sup 1.09/(3.5% NaCl solution), da/dN=1.95 *10/sup -7 .DELTA. K/sup 1.05/(1% NaCl solution), da/dN=2.62 * 10/sup -7/.DELTA./sup 0.72/(0.01% NaCl solution) with da/dN expressed in mm/cycle and .DELTA.K in MPa.GAMMA.m. The crack growth rate in the corrosion environment was highest under 3.5% NaCl solution.

  • Corrosion highly affects to reduce lifetime and performance of machinery metallic components. The effects of shot peening on the fatigue life of metal material under corrosive environment are investigated in this paper. Experimental results show that the fatigue limit of shot peened specimen increases about 52$\%$. That means the fatigue life of metallic components is highly extended by shot peening. The corrosion greatly reduces the fatigue strength depending on the corrosive condition from one week up to one year. In case of shot peened specimen, the corrosion does not reduce the fatigue strength and fatigue life up to six months. It means that shot peening has superior effectiveness to reduce the influence of corrosion to the metallic materials.

  • Fatigue life of catenary wires in various environments is reduced when stress is concentrated on some points, which are often found in corroded areas by surrounding pollutants. Therefore, the fatigue test were performed in order to investigate the effect of the surface corrosion on the destructive behavior in service environment and accelerated corrosion environment as well as th examine the corrosive property and mechanism of the catenary wires. In the fatigue test of the messenger stranded wire, the corrosion degraded materials showed 35~50% of fatigue life at a same stress amplitude compared to original material. Because the catenary wires have variable load by the interaction of periodic contacts with pantographs the maximum stresses of trolley wire and messenger wire calculated by simulation at the messenger wire during operation was estimated thought the corrosion behavior interpretation of variable stress and fatigue test.

  • In the geothermal power, the geothermal fluid such as water or steam is moved from the ground to turbine a pipeline. Because the geothermal fluid with high temperature contains Cl-and SO4-, It cause to diminish the system lifetime due to the increase in the corrosion of pipeline. In the present work, the characteristics of corrosion and its fatigue of the sus316 which is used in the pipeline are evaluated experimentally. From this study, the following results can be obtained; for the case of the corrosion environment, it is found that the corrosion rate is faster than that of the steam environment by 10 to 30 times, and the corrosion fatigue limit is underestimated compared to that of steam state.

  • The corrosion fatigue fracture behaviour of dual phase steel was investigated in 3% NaCl solution at 302MPa and 137MPa. Fatigue test was conducted by cantilever type of self-made rotary bending fatigue testing machine. The fatigue strength increased with increasing the hardness of 2nd phase. Corrosion pit originated at the boundary of the 2nd phase. The size and number of corrosion pits were influenced by the 2nd phase hardness, and pits remained constant in size just after they were transited into cracks. The life of crack initiation was effected by stress level. The shape of relation of .DELTA. K and da/dN has smaller scattering in it in 3% NaCl solution than that in air. The higher the 2nd phase hardness is, the greater the corrosion fatigue life becomes. Corrosion fatigue fracture behaviour was primarily effected by mechanical factor in case of high stress(302MPa), but by electro-chemical reaction in a lower stress(137MPa). As stress level got lower and hardness of the 2nd phase got higher, the roughness of fracture surface increased.

  • This paper dealt with the effect of the ratios N2 to H2 gas on the corrosion fatigue failure behavior of ion-nitrided SM45C steel specimens. The specimens were water cooled after ion-nitriding at 500.deg. C for 3hrs in 5 Torr, 0.8N$_{2}$ and 0.5N$_{2}$ atmospheres. As the nitrogen concentration increases, the higher compressive residual stresses developed in the surface layer and the depth of nitrided layer increased, which in turn gave rise to increases in fatigue strength and corrosion fatigue life. In the region less than 1.5 * 10$^{5}$ cycles, fatigue failure initiated at the brittle nitrided case, whereas in the region higher than 1.5 * 10$^{5}$ cycles crack initiated from the non-metallic inclusions in the subsurface. The initiation of corrosion fatigue failure was mainly attributed to pitting of case hardened surface layer.

  • This paper deals with the effect of $N_2$ and $H_2$gas mixture ratio and ion-nitriding time in the corrosion fatigue fracture behavior of ion-nitrided SCM4 steel with notch subject to rotary bending stress. The specimens were treated rapid water cooling after ion-nitriding at $500^{\circ}C$ Torr for 1 hour and 3 hours in gas mixtures of 80% $N_2$and 50% $N_2$. The fatigue limit and the fracture strength of corrosion fatigue depended on $N_2$gas quantity and ion-nitriding time. The ion-nitrided specimens showed about 88 .approx. 158% increase in the fracture strength of corrosion fatigue in $10^6$ cycles than non-nitrided specimens. The corrosion failure is due to corrosion pitting of the surface, and the propargation of cracks started at the surface into the core.

  • The corrosion fatigue test were carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of accelerated cooled (ACC) TMCP high tensile strength steels and weld joint with high heat input by one side one run submerged are welding. In this paper, the fatigue crack growth behaviors were investigated with the center crack tension specimen of base metal and heat affected zone in substitute sea water and air, respectively Main results obtained are sunnarized as follows: 1. The fatigue crack growth rates in sea water faster than those in air environment for the different heat input values, crack growth rate of base metal is very fast and effect of heat input is not remarkable. 2. In HAZ (82kJ/cm, 116kJ/cm), the crack branching phenomena were observed in both air and sea water environment, 3. In SEM observation, the corrosion effect on base metal was larger than that on HAZ in corrosion environment.

  • For structural design and diagnosis, quantitative relationship between corrosive degradation and variation of mechanical properties such as tensile strength and fatigue strength is needed. But it is difficult to find data associated with corrosive degradation of structural structures. In this study, first of all we established the atmospheric corrosion test procedure. And using specimens of SM490A and SS400 on the atmospheric corrosion test bed, we carried out tensile and fatigue tests at regular intervals. And we studied the effect of post-weld heat treatment on the tensile and fatigue behaviour. It is found fatigue strength decreases as the atmospheric corrosion period increases.

  • The effect of surface damage on fatigue properties of catenary wires were investigated to estimate their service lift. As surface defects of the wires caused by surface corrosion increase, surface roughness gets worse, and as roughness increases, it is easy for moisture coming from rain and dew to be condensed around uneven parts of the surface. The condensed moisture causes a locally severe corrosion which leads to damage of the wires. Corrosion of catenaty wires can make their actual lifetime shorter than that originally designed. The amount of decrease was more prominent as environmental conditions became more corrosive. They are also vibrated with some amplitude everytime pantographs touch contact line. The frequent cyclic load on the wire may result in a fatigue fracture. Surface damage by corrosion can make formation of crack initiation at fatigue. In the present study, the fatigue life of the used wire was measured 35 to 50% compared with that of new one in average.
