  • Pipes transport and supply fuel in various categories; however, corrosion occurs because of the external environment, impurities are mixed in the fuel, and substances leak to the outside, which can lead to serious accidents. Therefore, in this study, inspection equipment using a laser scanner was manufactured to classify conditions according to the degree of corrosion of the outer wall of the pipe, and the corrosion height and maximum value of the pipe were obtained from the surface information. Using the k-means method, it was classified into four states, and the standard of the average height and maximum height of corrosion for each state was derived.

  • In this study, a local corrosion environment monitoring was conducted using steel box specimen fabricated to be the same as actual steel bridge members. The steel box specimen that obtained the same corrosion environment as a steel bridge was classified into the upper plate, bottom plate and web plate. Atmospheric corrosion monitoring sensors(ACM sensors) were installed in each corrosion monitoring member of a steel box specimen to measure the corrosion current and examine time of wetness for each monitoring member. The time of wetness and accumulated corrosion current of each monitoring member were calculated from the measured corrosion current using ACM sensors. The corrosion environment that appeared for each of the steel box members was evaluated from monitoring corrosion environment data as the corrosion current, time of wetness, mean corrosion depth of each monitoring member. Additionally, the atmospheric corrosion environment monitoring was also conducted to compare with the local corrosion environment of steel box members. From these local corrosion environment monitoring for the steel box specimen, the relationship between the relative corrosion environment and mean corrosion depth of each steel box member was examined.

  • This paper deals with civil infrastructures in general, sensor and smart structure technology, and smart steel structures in particular. Smart structures technology, an integrated engineering field comprising sensor technology, structural control, smart materials and structural health monitoring, could dramatically transform and revolutionize the design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering structures. The central core of this technology is sensor and sensor networks that provide the essential data input in real time for condition assessment and decision making. Sensors and robust monitoring algorithms that can reliably detect the occurrence, location, and severity of damages such as crack and corrosion in steel structures will lead to increased levels of safety for civil infrastructure, and may significantly cut maintenance or repair cost through early detection. The emphasis of this paper is on sensor technology with a potential use in steel structures.

  • A quartz crystal analyzer is utilized to monitor the cmsion process of an aluminum surface of a quartz crystal by sea water. A quartz crystal having 2000${\AA}$ of aluminum layer is installed in a spedally designed cell and is in contact with an electrolyte solution. While a constant potential is applied to the cell, the resonant frequency and resonant resistance are simultaneously measured using the quartz crystal analyzer. In addition, surface topographs are taken with an atomic force microscope(AFM) and the element analysis of the surface is conducted using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrornetedEDX). The simultaneous measurement of resonant frequency and resonant resistance during the corrosion process explains the change of surface structure caused by the corrosion. The variation of resonant frequency addresses the amount surface metal dissolution. As a conclusion, it is found that a simple measurement using the quartz crystal analyzer can replace the complex monitoring employing large equipments in the investigation of a corrosion process of metal surface.

  • This paper describes several performances and nondestructive inspection for deterioration due to forest fires in overhead transmission lines. After discussing corrosion mechanism such as atmospheric and galvanic corrosion for aged ACSR conductors and its detection for them are presented. Through impedance analysis of a solenoid coil, it is shown that the eddy current sensor may be available to inspect severe fault or local corrosion. As the solenoid coil changes its impedance when the test conductor is inserted into the coil, it can be possible to measure deterioration degree caused by forest fires. Tensile strength, extension rate and sensor impedance are tested for some samples degraded by artificial fire. As increasing blazed period to some extent, the strength of aluminum strand begins to be reduced remarkably, while galvanized steel strand holds the similar strength to the initial value, despite of appearing a little loss of zinc layer. In general, it is shown that the sensor impedance would be increased while the tension load of conductor is reduced and the extension rate is contrarily increased. Therefore, the sensor output could exhibit the changes of mechanical performances, and would be used to detect such deterioration caused by forest fire in ACSR conductors built on the ridge of mountains. Finally, it was verified that the solenoid coil could be applicable to obtain any crucial inform for serious deterioration due to forest fires.

  • This measurement represents the effectiveness of sacrificial anode cathodic protection (SACP) system in a coastal bridge structure. To verify the cathodic protection (CP) effect, the monitoring sensor (DMS-100) that could measure potential, corrosion rate, current, concrete resistivity, and temperature was embedded. The measurement conducted for three years after CP system was installed. Specifically, due to the fact that fresh water and sea water was repeated in the bridge structure, this bridge structure presented special CP behavior. Measurement factors were CP potential, CP current, concrete resistivity, and depolarization potential. In addition, visual inspection was also carried out. As a result of current and depolarization measurement, CP system was well activated in most piers.
