This paper deals with stress corrosion cracking behavior of high strength steel exposed to marine environments. The objective is to determine the time to failure as a function of hydrogen concentration and tensile stress in the wires. A crack growth curve is modeled using finite element method (FEM) program. The coupled hydrogen diffusion-stress analyses of SCC were programmed separately. The first part is calculating stress and stress intensity /sup 1)/factor of a cylindrical shell, prestressing tendon or suspension bridge wires, from the initiation of cracks to rupture. Virtual crack extension method, contour integral method, and crack tip elements are used for the calculation of stresses in front of the crack tip. Comparisons of the result show a good agreement with the analytical equations and wire tests. The second part of the study deals with the programming of hydrogen diffusion, affected by hydrostatic stress, calculated at the location of boundary of plastic area around the crack tip. The results of paper can be used in the design and management of prestressed structures, cable stayed and suspension bridges. Time dependent correlated parallel reliabilities of a cable, composed of 36 wires, were evaluated by the consideration of the deterioration of stress corrosion cracking.
Degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to chloride penetration followed by reinforcement corrosion has been a serious problem in civil engineering for many years. The numerical simulation methods at present are mainly finite element method (FEM) and finite difference method (FDM), which are based on mesh. Mesh generation in engineering takes a long time. In the present article, the numerical solution of chloride transport in concrete is analyzed using radial point interpolation method (RPIM) and element-free Galerkin (EFG). They are all meshless methods. RPIM utilizes radial polynomial basis, whereas EFG uses the moving least-square approximation. A Galerkin weak form on global is used to attain the discrete equation, and four different numerical examples are presented. MQ function and appropriate parameters have been proposed in RPIM. Numerical simulation results are compared with those obtained from the finite element method (FEM) and analytical solutions. Two case of chloride transport in full saturated and unsaturated concrete are analyzed to test the practical applicability and performance of the RPIM and EFG. A good agreement is obtained among RPIM, EFG, and the experimental data. It indicates that RPIM and EFG are reliable meshless methods for prediction of chloride concentration in concrete structures.

In recently days, the breed fish farm is increased in the beach side for farming fish. In such a farm, the heater is requested for preventing freezing in cold season. The heating material are requested high corrosion resistance and strength for endurance high corrosive salt and pressure. In case of low corrosion resistance and/or strength, the heating element shall be broke down and eventually make spillage or leaking contaminated salt. In the most cases, crevice corrosion is localized form of corrosion usually associated with a stagnant solution on the micro-environmental level. In this study, the crevice corrosion of Ferritic type 430 stainless steel is investigated. The size of specimen is $15{\times}20{\times}3mmt$. Test solution is 1N H2SO4 + 0.05N NaCl. The artificial crevice gap size is $0.24{\times}3{\times}15mmL$. Crevice corrosion is measured under applied voltage 300mV(SCE) to the external surface. the result of this study showed that 1) the induced time for initiation of crevice is 750seconds, 2) potential is dropped in the crevice from the top of gap opening from -320 to -399mV. The result confirmed that the potential drop(IR mechanism) in the crevice is one of mechanism for crevice corrosion.

This paper focuses on the estimation of durability and service-life of reinforced concrete structures in Wolsong Low- and intermediate-level wastes Disposal Center (WLDC) in Korea. There are six disposal silos located in the saturated environment. The silo concrete is degraded due to reactions with groundwater and chemical attacks, and finally it will lose its properties as a transport barrier. The infiltration of sulfate and magnesium, leaching of potassium hydroxide, and chlorine induced corrosion are the most significant factors for degradation of reinforced concrete structure in underground environment. From the result of evaluation of the degradation time for each factor, the degradation rate of the reinforced concrete due to sulfate and magnesium is $1.308{\times}10^{-3}cm/yr$, and it is estimated to take 48,000 years for full degradation while potassium hydroxide is leached in depth of less than 1.5 cm at 1,000 years after the initiation of degradation. In case of chlorine induced corrosion, it takes 1,648 years to initiate corrosion in the main reinforced bar and 2,288 years to reach the lifetime limit of the structural integrity, and thus it is evaluated as the most significant factor.

There are various method for evaluating the durability life of concrete structures due to salt damage. The best way is to perform a corrosion test for a rebar embedded in concrete specimen was exposure to marine environment. However, this method has the disadvantage that it takes a long period of time. Also, accelerated corrosion test which was complemented complements the time-consuming weakness is limited to apply because it could not reveal a correlation between long-term exposure test. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to derive a correlation coefficient between cycle drying-wetting accelerated corrosion test and long-term exposure test. Corrosion initiation time was measured in four types of concrete samples, i.e., two samples mixed with fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag(BS), and the other two samples having two water/cement ratio(W/C = 0.6, 0.35) without admixture(OPC 60 and OPC 35). The accelerated corrosion test was carried out by two case, i.e., one is a cyclic drying-wetting method(case 1), and the other is a artificial seawater ponding test method(case 2). Whether corrosion occurs, it was measures using half-cell potential method. The results indicated that case 1 is to accelerated the corrosion of rebar about 24~36% as compared with case 2, then the corrosion of rebar embedded in concrete occurred according to the order of OPC60, FA, BS, OPC35. Correlation coefficient between accelerated corrosion test and long-term exposure test, case 1 is 4.23 to 5.42, and case 2 is 6.54 to 7.82.

A lot of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in Syria went out of service after a few years of construction. This was mainly due to reinforcement corrosion or chemical attack on concrete. The use of blended cements is growing rapidly in the construction industry due to economical, ecological and technical benefits. Syria is relatively rich in scoria. In the study, mortar/concrete specimens were produced with seven types of cement: one plain Portland cement (control) and six blended cements with replacement levels ranging from 10 to 35 %. Rapid chloride penetration test was carried in accordance with ASTM C 1202 after two curing times of 28 and 90 days. The effect on the resistance of concrete against damage caused by corrosion of the embedded steel has been investigated using an accelerated corrosion test by impressing a constant anodic potential. The variation of current with time and time to failure of RC specimens were determined at 28 and 90 days curing. In addition, effects of aggressive acidic environments on mortars were investigated through 100 days of exposure to 5 % $H_2SO_4$, 10 % HCl, 5 % $HNO_3$ and 10 % $CH_3COOH$ solutions. Evaluation of sulfate resistance of mortars was also performed by immersing in 5 % $Na_2SO_4$ solution for 52 weeks. Test results reveal that the resistance to chloride penetration of concrete improves substantially with the increase of replacement level, and the concretes containing scoria based-blended cements, especially CEM II/B-P, exhibited corrosion initiation periods several times longer than the control mix. Further, an increase in scoria addition improves the acid resistance of mortar, especially in the early days of exposure, whereas after a long period of continuous exposure all specimens show the same behavior against the acid attack. According to results of sulfate resistance, CEM II/B-P can be used instead of SRPC in sulfate-bearing environments.

Chloride attack and carbonation induced corrosion of reinforcement are those of the main factors which cause the deterioration of concrete structures. The objective of this study is to suggest an analytic model for the prediction of chloride penetration into carbonated concrete, in order to make up for the current codes. Carbonation depth model considering the moisture effect is validated by being compared with the test data and the analytic model on chloride penetration into carbonated concrete is developed. Finally, the corrosion-initiation time has been predicted by the present model, being compared with that by the current code equation. The comparison shows that the current code equation can underestimate the chloride penetration into carbonated concrete in marine atmospheric conditions.
It is well-documented that the major deterioration of coastal RC structures is chloride-induced corrosion. Therefore, regional investigations are necessary for durability based design and evaluation of the proposed service life prdiction models. In this paper, four reinforced concrete jetties exposed to severe marine environment were monitored to assess the long term chloride penetration at 6 months to 96 months. Also, some accelerated durability tests were performed on standard samples in laboratory. As a result, two time-dependent equations are proposed for basic parameters of chloride diffusion into concrete and then the corrosion initiation time is estimated by a developed probabilistic service life model Also, two famous service life prediction models are compared using chloride profiles obtained from structures after about 40 years in the tidal exposure conditions. The results confirm that the influence of concrete quality on diffusion coefficients is related to the concrete pore structure and the time dependence is due to chemical reactions of sea water ions with hydration products which lead a reduction in pore structure. Also, proper attention to the durability properties of concrete may extend the service life of marine structures greater than fifty years, even in harsh environments.

The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the resistance of reinforcement corrosion and chloride ion penetration of high volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete. For this purpose, concrete test specimens were made for various strength level and replacement ratio of fly ash, and then compressive strength and diffusion coefficient for chloride ion of them were measured for 28, 91 and 182 days, respectively. Also, corrosion monitoring by half cell potential method was carried out for the made lollypop concrete test specimens to detect the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement in concrete. As a result, it was observed from the test results that compressive strength of HVFA concrete was decreased with increasing replacement ratio of fly ash but long-term resistance against reinforcement corrosion and chloride ion penetration of that was increased.
Early detection of small concrete crack or reinforcement corrosion is necessary for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Global vibration based methods are advantageous over local methods because of simple equipment installation and cost efficiency. Among vibration based techniques, FRF based methods are preferred over modal based methods. In this study, a new coupled method using frequency response function (FRF) and proper orthogonal modes (POM) is proposed by using the dynamic characteristic of a damaged beam. For the numerical simulation, wave finite element (WFE), coupled with traditional finite element (FE) method is used for effectively incorporating the damage related information and faster computation. As reported in literature, hybrid combination of wave function based wave finite element method and shape function based finite element method can addresses the mid frequency modelling difficulty as it utilises the advantages of both the methods. It also reduces the dynamic matrix dimension. The algorithms are implemented on a three-dimensional reinforced concrete beam. Damage is modelled and studied for two scenarios, i.e., crack in concrete and rebar corrosion. Single and multiple damage locations with different damage length are also considered. The proposed methodology is found to be very sensitive to both single- and multiple- damage while being computationally efficient at the same time. It is observed that the detection of damage due to corrosion is more challenging than that of concrete crack. The similarity index obtained from the damage parameters shows that it can be a very effective indicator for appropriately indicating initiation of damage in concrete structure in the form of spread corrosion or invisible crack.
