  • The propose of this study is to understand the phenomenon of radiation and comparison of analysis of two methods. One is analysis method of same-time data and the another is analysis method of rank data. We confirmed that two methods of correlation analysis had the effectiveness and suitability. The followings are main results from this study. 1) The seasonal correlation coefficient of long and short-wave radiation is higher in winter than in summer because of high humidity in the summer season can makes easily cloud in the sky locally. 2) According to analysis method, there is big difference in correlation coefficient from 0.494(Analysis method of same-time data) to 0.967(Analysis method of rank data) with short-wave radiation by the location during summer. These results have significant value in solar radiation research and analysis. It has explored a new way for solar radiation research of analysis method as well.

  • The comparison of the repeated measurements is often needed to see whether they agree sufficiently, when a measurement is repeated under identical conditions by different raters. Such investigations are often analyzed inappropriately, by using correlation coefficient. The purpose of this study is to introduce statistical methods for accessing the agreement of the repeated measurements, which include Bland-Altman plot, intra class correlation, Passing-Bablok regression and Cohen's kappa coefficient, and to show how to execute them using examples.

  • Francis Gallon (1822-1911) introduced the term 'regression' and 'correlation' in the study on human inheritance of the stature from parents to their children. In almost every statistics textbook, superficial attentions have been given to him just as the inventor of the term 'regression'. Rereading his books and papers, we investigated problems he had tried to solve and the methods he had used to solve the problems. In addition, we tried to find the motivation that had led Gallon to take attention to the variation rather than the central tendency of observational data that had fascinated his forerunner Adloph Quetelet.

  • Purpose: The level of the implant above the marginal bone and flap design have an effect on the bone resorption during the healing period. The aim of this study is to detect the relationship between the level of the implant at the implant placement and the bone level at the healing period in the mesial and distal side of implants placed with flapless (FL) and full-thickness flap (FT) methods. Methods: Twenty-two nonsubmerged implants were placed with the FL and FT technique. Periapical radiographs were taken of the patient at implant placement, and at 6 and 12 weeks. By using computer software, bone level measurements were taken from the shoulder of the healing cap to the first bone implant contact in the mesial and distal side of the implant surface. Results: At 6 weeks, the correlation between the crestal bone level at the implant placement and crestal bone level of the FT mesially was significant (Pearson correlation coefficient=0.675, P<0.023). At 12 weeks, in the FT mesially, the correlation was nonsignificant (Spearman correlation coefficient=0.297, P<0.346). At 6 weeks in the FT distally, the correlation was nonsignificant (Pearson correlation coefficient=0.512, P<0.107). At 12 weeks in the FT distally, the correlation was significant (Spearman correlation coefficient=0.730, P<0.011). At 6 weeks in the FL mesially, the correlation was nonsignificant (Spearman correlation coefficient=0.083, P<0.809). At 12 weeks in the FL mesially, the correlation was nonsignificant (Spearman correlation coefficient= 0.062, P<0.856). At 6 weeks in the FL distally, the correlation was nonsignificant (Spearman correlation coefficient=0.197, P<0.562). At 12 weeks in the FL distally, the correlation was significant (Pearson correlation coefficient=0.692, P<0.018). Conclusions: A larger sample size is recommended to verify the conclusions in this preliminary study. The bone level during the healing period in the FT was more positively correlated with the implant level at implant placement than in the FL.

  • In the channel-varying environment, it is very important to estimate the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of received signal and to transmit the signal effectively for the modern communication system. The performance of existing non-data-aided (NDA) SNR estimation methods are substantially degraded for high level modulation scheme such as M-ary APSK or QAM. In this paper, we propose a SNR estimation method which uses zero point auto-correlation of received signal per block and auto-/cross- correlation of decision feedback signal in OFDM system. Proposed method can be studied into two Types; Type 1 can estimate SNR by zero point auto-correlation of decision feedback signal based on the second moment property. Type 2 uses both zero point auto-correlation and cross-correlation based on the fourth moment property. In block-by-block reception of OFDM system, these two SNR estimation methods can be possible for the practical implementation due to correlation based the estimation method and they show more stable estimation performance than the previous SNR estimation methods. Also, we mathematically derive the SNR estimation expression according to computational difference of auto-/cross-correlation. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are used to verify the proposed method.

  • DVC(Distributed Video Coding) techniques have been attracting a lot of research works since these enable us to implement the light-weight video encoder and to provide good coding efficiency by introducing the feedback channel. However, the feedback channel causes the decoder to increase the decoding complexity and requires very high decoding latency because of numerous iterative decoding processes. So, in order to reduce the decoding delay and then to implement in a real-time environment, this paper proposes several parity bit estimation methods which are based on the temporal correlation, spatial correlation and spatio-temporal correlations between LDPCA frames on each bit plane in the consecutive video frames in pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv video coding scheme and then the performances of these methods are compared in fast DVC scheme. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the adaptive spatio-temporal correlation-based estimation method and the temporal correlation-based estimation method outperform others for the video frames with the highly active contents and the low active contents, respectively. By using these results, the proposed estimation schemes will be able to be effectively used in a variety of different applications.

  • As the service of information through web system increases in modern society, many questions and consultations are going on through Home page and E-mail in the hospital. But there are some burdens for the management and postponements for answering the questions. In this paper, we investigate the document classification methods as a primary research of the auto-answering system. On the basis of 1200 documents which are questions of patients, 66% are used for the learning documents and 34% for test documents. All of are also used for the document classification using NBC (Naive Bayes Classifier), common words and coefficient of correlation. As the result of the experiments, the two methods proposed in this paper, that is, common words and coefficient of correlation are higher as much as 3% and 5% respectively than the basic NBC methods. This result shows that the correlation between indexes and categories is more effective than the word frequency in the document classification.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the statistical methods and the results had reported correlation/regression analysis in the studies of Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing (KJWHN). Methods: We reviewed 45 studies using correlation/regression analysis for the suitability of the statistical methods and the research purposes, the criteria for analysis of figures, tables and charts had published in the KJWHN from vol 13 (1) in 2007 to vol 15 (4) in 2009. Results: Forty three studies were fitted to their statistical methodology and their research purposes. Eleven studies considered the minimum sample size. Fourteen regression studies used multiple regression and 12 studies used forward method for variable entry. Only one study among the 17 regression studies accomplished scatter plots and residuals examination. Sixteen studies in correlation studies and six studies in regression studies showed some errors in either the title, variables, category of figures, tables and charts. In the regression study, all reported $R^2$ and ${\beta}$ values except one. Conclusion: It was found that there were still statistical errors or articulation errors in the statistical analysis. All reviewers need to be reviewed more closely for detecting errors not only during reviewing process of the manuscript but also periodic publication for the quality of this academic journal.
