  • The local magnitude scales yield in the Southern Korean Peninsula following the Richter's original definition are reviewed. In order to compare the previous $M_L$ scales, the new distance correction term of $M_L$ scale is derived as $-logA_{0}$ = 1.017log(r/17)+0.00028(r-17)2+2.0 using broadband velocity seismograms from 126 local events occured from 2000 to 2004. The attenuation rate of this formula fall between those of western and eastern North America. This result is in nearly accord with the $M_L$ scales proposed by Kim and Park(2002). The differences between various $M_L$ scales is owing to insufficient seismic data not to distribute whole area of Southern Korea

  • This paper presents the preliminary results of an experimental study on surface crack growth under fatigue loadings. The objective of this paper is to assess the effect of the initial crack size on crack propagation behaviors. Transparent PMMA plate speciments with shallow circular arc notch were used. Crack growth behaviors were observed and measured in two directions by travelling microscopes. The fatigue crack initiated at the deepest part on the initial arc shaped notch and then propagated to depth direction as well as spreading gradually along the notch tip. A considerable number of cycles was needed until the depth crack spreaded to the surface notch tip. When the fatigue crack reached the surface notch tip the crack front became an approximate semi-ellipse, primary semi-elliptical crack. Test results suggest that the relationships between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range in both directions can be expressed by power law (Paris) and that relationship in width direction depends upon the crack ratios a$_{1}$/b$_{1}$, of the primary semi-elliptical crack. The relationship between the nondimensional crack lengths in both directions can be represented as the formula: (a/t)$^{n}$ =B(2b/W+A) where n and A are constants and B is seems to be depended upon the crack ratio a$_{1}$/b$_{1}$.

  • We suggest a simple and practical flood forecasting and warning system, which can predict change in the water level of a river in a small to medium-size watershed where flash flooding occurs in a short time. We first choose the flood defense target points, through evaluation of the flood risk of dike overflow and lowland inundation. Using data on rainfall, and on the water levels at the observed and prediction points, we investigate the interrelations and derive a regression formula from which we can predict the flood level at the target points. We calculate flood water levels through a calibrated flood simulation model for various rainfall scenarios, to overcome the shortage of real water stage data, and these results as basic population data are used to derive a regression formula. The values calculated from the regression formula are modified by the weather condition factor, and the system can finally predict the flood stages at the target points for every leading time. We also investigate the applicability of the prediction procedure for real flood events of the Jungnang Stream basin, and find the forecasting values to have close agreement with the surveyed data. We therefore expect that this suggested warning scheme could contribute usefully to the setting up of a flood forecasting and warning system for a small to medium-size river basin.

  • Spatial interpolation has become a common procedure in converting temperature forecasts and observations at irregular points for use in regional scale ecosystem modeling and the model based decision support systems for resource management. Neglection of terrain effects in most spatial interpolations for short term temperatures may cause erroneous results in mountainous regions, where the observation network hardly covers full features of the complicated terrain. A spatial interpolation model for daytime hourly temperature was formulated based on error analysis of unsampled site with respect to the site topography. The model has a solar irradiance correction scheme in addition to the common backbone of the lapse rate - corrected inverse distance weighting. The solar irradiance scheme calculates the direct, diffuse and reflected components of shortwave radiation over any surfaces based on the sun-slope geometry and compares the sum with that over a reference surface. The deviation from the reference radiation is used to calculate the temperature correction term by an empirical conversion formula between the solar energy and the air temperature on any sloped surfaces at an hourly time scale, which can be prepared seasonally for each land cover type. When this model was applied to a 14 km by 22 km mountainous region at a 10 m horizontal resolution, the estimated hourly temperature surfaces showed a better agreement with the observed distribution than those by a conventional method.

  • Global change and local fluctuation of earth's gravity field play important roles in accurate vertical positioning as well as in accurate horizontal positioning. Regarding the impotance, in this study, the concept of gravity potential theory connected with the influence of gravity field and every kind of height were discussed. Various kind of heights using the observed gravity and leveling data were computed and analysed to study the influence of earth's gravity field in accurate vertical positioning. Taking the route from Busan to Kyongju and investigating the ratios ($\Delta$H/dH) of height defferences (dH) between calculated heights considering gravity field and leveling height to relative heights (dH) between adjacent stations, we get the result that the values by correction formula increase linearly according to latitude, and the values by gravity potential ere strongly influenced by pseudo topography.

  • This paper presents a novel method to determine sound power level(PWL) emitted by a travelling vehicle for road traffic noise simulation. The PWL is evaluated by the equivalent sound pressure level (SPL) measured by close proximity method and the sound power correction factor derived from the maximum SPL measured by pass-by method and the propagation attenuation of vehicle noise during the pass-by measurement. Using the method, we derive the empirical formula for PWL estimation in 1/1-octave and overall frequency bands for 8 vehicles (automobile, SUV, small truck, large bus, trailer, 3 dump trucks) tested at two road surfaces (dense graded asphalt, 30mm transverse tinning concrete) of Korean highway test road. The suggested approach, if securing sufficient data to represent the acoustic characteristics of all vehicle types, has il strong merit to be able to evaluate sound power levels for any combination of vehicle categories and traffic volumes.

  • Deck plates of ships or offshore structures would make out-of-plane distortion for their thin thickness. These distortions are usually straightened by thermal straightening such as flame heating method. After thermal straightening, the blocks are lifted and moved by cranes to assemble it at dry-dock stage. After this lifting process, out-of-plane deformation again happens frequently. And then, they continuously cause quality and accuracy problems in the final dry-dock process. So, it takes more time for repair and correction working. According to preceding research, the lifting process by cranes would offset the effect on thermal straightening. The target of this study is to develop a methodology analyzing the remaining efficiency of thermal straightening after block lifting. The development was based on the assumption of yield state at straightening region. Therefore the remaining efficiency was obtained by different stiffness slope while lifting & relieving. The efficiency formula was designed using inherent strain, and we made a table of zero-efficiency by cooling speed and class rule's steels. As a result, if the stress orthogonal to straightened line is calculated during lifting analysis by FEA, the efficiency can be obtained linearly to the values in the table. Finally, even optimized carling position can be designed by considering the regional data from series project and welding region on deck.

  • This paper is the second part of several companion papers which compare the method of Air-fuel ratio(AFR) determination. In the previous paper, Eltinge chart was applied to the arbitrary fuel composition and the charts for gasoline, diesel, methanol, M85, liquefied petroleum gas(LPG), natural gas(NG), propane and butane were illustrated. In Eltinge chart, however, unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) is not used for determination of AFR. For improving accuracy, Eltinge suggested UHC compensation after the AFR reading in the chart. This compensation reduced the difference between real and reading value. In the compensation, however, the correction of oxygen and carbon dioxide is uncertain and there might be a mistake in conversion of UHC reading value. Therefore, the error is overestimated comparing with Spindt one which is most widely used. In addition, there is no comparison of the value with other useful methods. In this paper, the compensation of unburned HC was performed in Eltinge chart and the compensated value was compared with Spindts formula over wide range of AFR. The objects of investigating fuel are gasoline, methanol, NG and LPG. The result shows that Eltinge and Spindt method is flawlessly compatible and the difference between the two methods is under 0.3% in a λrange from 0.9 to 1.7. The method fur debugging instrumentation error is also presented.

  • Tetralogy of Fallot is characterized by the interventricular septal defect associated with obstruction of the right ventricular outflow. The importance of the latter anatomic malformation was clinically evaluated according to the angiographic measurements of the pulmonary arteries along with the pulmonary valve annulus. Seventy of a total 76 patients operated on during a whole year of 1981 were the patients for clinical evaluation. Fifteen patients died within 1 month after operation with the operative mortality of 21.4%. The young age and the severity of pulmonary arterial hypoplasia were ones among the surgical risk factors at a total corrective surgery of tetralogy. Preoperative angiographic measurements of the pulmonary arteries to speculate the expected postoperative ratio between the left ventricular and the right ventricular pressures were retrospectively calculated according to the formula. The predicted values of P RV/LV greater than 0.5 carried apparenliy higher complication and mortality rates than the group of P RV/LV less then 0.5. The selection of the candidates for either a total correction or the staged operation In tetralogy of Fallot can be evaluated on the preoperative angiographic measurements and the expected Improvements of the clinical results were discussed.
