Management of a Retained Bullet in the Corpora Cavernosa after a Civilian Gunshot Injury: A Rare Scenario

  • A 24-year-old man presented to King Saud Medical City emergency department with a retained bullet in his penis following a civilian exchange of gunfire. After an initial assessment, the patient was taken to the operating room. Penile exploration was performed, the bullet was extracted successfully, and the corpora cavernosa were repaired properly. A 6-week follow-up showed full healing with preservation of erectile function. Immediate surgical intervention is mandatory as the primary treatment for penile gunshot injury to ensure proper anatomical and functional recovery.

한국어 어절의 철자변화 현상 분류와 인식 방법 ((A Method to Classify and Recognize Spelling Changes between Morphemes of a Korean Word))

  • 현재의 한국어 형태소 태그 부착 말뭉치에는 형태소 결합 경계의 철자변화 정보가 명시적으로 표시되어 있지 않다. 이로 인해 태그 부착 말뭉치로부터 형태소 분석에 필요한 사전을 자동으로 구축하거나 형태소 결합 경계의 철자변화 현상에 대한 체계적 예제 수집 등과 같은 한국어 형태론 연구에 필요한 자료 획득이 어렵다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위하여 본 논문은 사전과 음운 규칙을 이용하지 않고, 태그 부착 말뭉치의 어절 문자열과 형태소 문자열만을 비교하여 어절을 구성하는 형태소의 철자변화 현상을 인식하는 간단한 방법을 제안한다. 이 방법은 규칙을 사용하지 않기 때문에 두 형태소 결합으로 나타나는 모든 철자변화 현상을 유연하게 인식할 수 있고, 알고리즘 구현만으로 문제를 해결할 수 있기 때문에 비용이 싸다는 특징이 있다. 한 태그 부착 말뭉치에 대한 실험에서 본 방법은 실험 말뭉치 어절에 나타나는 철자 변화를 100% 인식하는 것으로 나타났다.

Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression and Luteal Cell DNA Fragmentation of Porcine Cyclic Corpora Lutea

  • Nitric oxide (NO) derived from inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is involved in cell apoptosis, which contributes to luteal regression and luteolysis in some species. In large domestic animals, no direct evidence for the relationship between NO and cell apoptosis in the process of corpus luteum regression is reported. The present study was conducted to investigate the localization of iNOS on porcine corpora lutea (CL) during the oestrus cycle and its relation to cell DNA fragmentation and CL regression. According to morphology, four luteal phases throughout the estrous cycle were defined as CL1, CL2, CL3 and CL4. By isoform-specific antibody against iNOS, the immunochemial staining was determined. Luteal cell DNA fragmentation was determined by flow cytometry. The results showed that no positive staining for iNOS was in CL1 and that iNOS was produced but limited to the periphery of CL2, while in the CL3, the spreading immunochemical staining was found inside the CL. No iNOS positive staining was detected in CL4. Meanwhile, DNA fragmentation increased dramatically when CL developed from CL2 to CL3 (p<0.05). In CL4, higher proportion of luteal cells still had fragmented DNA than that of luteal cells from CL1 or CL2 (p<0.05). These results indicate that iNOS expression is closely related to luteal cell apoptosis and then to luteal regression.

Influence of the Dominant Follicle on the Superovulatory Response in Cattle

  • Nine cows were superovulated by administration of 8 injections of Folltropin each (2.5 ml/injection, 1.75 mg/ml) i.m spread over 4 days, beginning on Day 10 of oestrous cycle, and 30 and 20 mg prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$ was given along with the 5th and 6th injections of Folltropin, respectively, to induce luteolysis. The animals were artificially inseminated 48, 60 and 72 h after the first prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}$ injection. The number of corpora lutea was recorded by palpation per rectum and by ultrasonography on Day 6 (Day 0 = day of oestrus). The ovaries were examined daily by ultrasonography on Days 3-9 of the oestrous cycle for following the growth and regression of the largest follicle, which was considered the morphologically dominant follicle. The animals were classified into two groups depending upon the presence (n = 4) and absence of a dominant follicle (n = 5). There was a high correlation (r = 0.97, p < 0.001) between the number of corpora lutea observed by palpation per rectum and that determined by ultrasonography. Mean (${\pm}SEM$) number of corpora lutea determined by ultrasonography ($11.20{\pm}3.71$ vs $3.25{\pm}0.75$) and by palpation per rectum ($10.40{\pm}3.91$ vs $2.25{\pm}0.75$) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the nondominant group compared to that in the dominant group. There was no difference in the numbers of follicles 2-3 mm ($13.80{\pm}4.49$ vs $8.00{\pm}1.08$), 4-6 mm ($7.00{\pm}1.87$ vs $3.50{\pm}1.33$), and the total number of follicles ${\geq}2mm$ ($22.00{\pm}5.95$ vs $12.50{\pm}1.26$) between the two groups, one day prior to initiation of superovulation. There was, however, a significant (p<0.01) positive correlation between the number of corpora lutea with the numbers of follicles 2-3 mm (r = 0.83), 4-6 mm (r = 0.80) and the total number of follicles ${\geq}2mm$ (r = 0.89) observed one day prior to initiation of superovulation. The results of this study indicate that the presence of a dominant follicle adversely affects the superovulatory response in cattle.

한국 신문의 영어 번역에 나타난 번역 보편소의 코퍼스 기반 분석 (A Corpus-based Study of Translation Universals in English Translations of Korean Newspaper Texts)

  • 본 연구는 번역된 텍스트들에 전형적으로 나타나는 언어적 특성들인 번역 보편소(translation universals)에 관한 코퍼스 기반 연구이다. 지금까지의 번역 보편소 연구는 언어계통상 서로 밀접한 관련이 있는 영어와 다른 유럽어 사이의 번역에 집중되어 왔으며, 다른 한편으로 주로 문학 장르의 분석에 치중되어 있다는 아쉬움을 지닌다. 본 연구에서는 관련 연구가 지닌 이러한 두 가지 주요 문제점을 보완하고자 하는 노력의 일환으로 한국어를 원문으로 하는 영어 번역 가운데 비문학 장르인 신문언어 텍스트를 분석대상으로 선택하였다. 먼저, 번역된 신문영어 텍스트와 비번역 신문영어 텍스트를 정해진 기준에 따라 수집하여 번역과 비번역 영어(translated and non-translated English)로 구성된 대응코퍼스(comparable corpora)를 구축하였다. 이렇게 구축된 대응 코퍼스를 바탕으로 기존 문헌에서 논의된 번역 보편소 가설 가운데 가장 대표적인 단순화(simplification), 명시화(explicitation), 규범화(normalization), 평준화(leveling-out) 현상이 한국어 신문의 영어 번역 텍스트에서 어떠한 양상을 보이는지 살펴봄으로써 각 가설들이 지니는 타당성을 검증해보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 분석결과를 종합해보면, 단순화와 규범화를 제외한 나머지 하위가설의 언어적 특성들은 모든 언어쌍과 모든 텍스트 장르에 걸쳐 일반화하기에 다소 한계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 번역 보편소의 개념 규정이나 분석지표의 정교화, 그리고 결과의 일반화에는 신중한 접근이 필요할 것으로 보인다.

PMSG와 $PGF_{2{\Alpha}}$ 투여가 임신랫드의 생식과 혈장 progesterone 및 혈장과 자궁액의 Na와 K 농도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of PMSG and Prostaglandin $F_2$ on the Reproduction, Concentration of Plasma Progesterone and Na and K Contents of the Plasma and Uterine Fluid in Pregnant Rat)

  • The effects of PMSG and/or prostaglandin analogue, cloprostenol, on the prevention of implantation, termination of pregnancy, concentration of plasma progesterone, and Na and K contents of the plasma and uterine fluid were studied in pregnant rats. PMSG 50 or 100 IU concomitant with cloprostenol 90 or 180 mg were administered once on day 3 or 9 of gestation. Rats were autopsied on days 8, 10 or 21 gestation. A single administration of PMSG resulted in increasing the number of corpora lutea, preventing implantation and terminating pregnancy. A single administration of cloprostenol had no effect on the prevention of implantation and termination of pregnancy but was able to induce the termination of pregnancy administering at large doses on day 9. A single administration of PMSG concomitant with cloprostenol ws found to be very increased the number of corpora lutea and to be 100% effective in preventing implantation and to be nearly 100% effective in terminating pregnancy. It is uncommon that a single dose of PMSG 50 IU concomitant with cloprostenol 90 or 180 mg on day 9 was able to maintain the pregnancy at very low rates of 0.3∼5.3%. Concentration of plasma progesterone and Na and K contents of the plasma and uterine fluid were increased or decreased administering PMSG and/or cloprostenol, but had no effect on preventing implantation and terminating pregnancy.
