  • The strength characteristics as well as deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composite (HSC) structures were investigated under bending in consideration of various failure modes such as skin layer yielding, interface-delamination, core shear deformation and local buckling. Deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich plates were observed with various types of aluminum honeycomb core and skin layer. Their finite-element analysis simulation with a real model of honeycomb core was performed to analyze stresses and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich plates. Its results were very comparable to the experimental ones. Consequently, the increase in skin layer thickness and in cell size of honeycomb core had dominant effects on the strength and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composites.

  • The parametric resonance problems of axisymmetric sandwich annular plate with an electrorheological (ER) fluid core and constraining layer are investigated. The annular plate is covered an electrorheological fluid core layer and a constraining layer to improve the stability of the system. The discrete layer annular finite element and the harmonic balance method are adopted to calculate the boundary of instability regions for the sandwich annular plate system. Besides, the rheological property of an electrorheological material, such as viscosity, plasticity, and elasticity can be changed when applying an electric field. When the electric field is applied on the sandwich structure, the damping of the sandwich system is more effective. Thus, variations of the instability regions for the sandwich annular plate with different applying electric fields, thickness of ER layer, and some designed parameters are presented and discussed in this study. The ER fluid core is found to have a significant effect on the location of the boundaries of the instability regions.

  • This study deals with dynamic model of composite sandwich panels with functionally graded flexible cores under low velocity impacts of multiple large or small masses using a new improved higher order sandwich panel theory (IHSAPT). In-plane stresses were considered for the functionally graded core and face sheets. The formulation was based on the first order shear deformation theory for the composite face sheets and polynomial description of the displacement fields in the core that was based on the second Frostig's model. Fully dynamic effects of the functionally graded core and face-sheets were considered in this study. Impacts were assumed to occur simultaneously and normally over the top and/or bottom of the face-sheets with arbitrary different masses and initial velocities. The contact forces between the panel and impactors were treated as internal forces of the system. Nonlinear contact stiffness was linearized with a newly presented improved analytical method in this paper. The results were validated by comparing the analytical, numerical and experimental results published in the latest literature.

  • Nanostructures consisting of $TiO_2$ particles as a core and carbon as a shell ($TiO_2$@C) were prepared by heat treatment of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles at high temperature in a methane atmosphere. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy showed that a carbon shell layer was formed well. These structures were used as supports for platinum nanoparticles and the hybrid particles exhibit improved catalytic activity and stability toward ORR compared to Pt on a carbon black (Vulcan XC-72R). It is likely that enhanced catalytic properties of the Pt on $TiO_2$@C could be due to the stability of the core-shell support in comparison with carbon black support.

  • For the analysis of structures, specifically if it is large-scale, in which case it can not be solved within the core memory, the majority of computation time is consumed In the solution of simultaneous linear equation. In this study an efficient in- and out-of-core column solver for sparse symmetric matrix utilizing memory moving scheme is developed. Compare with existing blocking methods the algorithm is simple, therefore the coding and computational efficiencies are greatly enhanced. Upon available memory size, the solver automatically performs solution within the core or outside core. Analysis example shows that the proposed method efficiently solve the large structural problem on the small-memory microcomputer.

  • This paper provides the engineer with a simple design method dealing with situations arise where in-situ reinforced concrete joints are cast between hollow core units. Using finite element method, hollow core slabs with wide in-situ RC joints under point load and line loads are analysed. In addition, some important behavioural characteristics of the floor slab subjected to line and point loads are investigated. In-situ reinforced concrete joint causes reduction of load distribution for remote units because distance to the remote units from the point of load is increased, while the portion of load distribution carried by loaded unit increases. Also, it was turned out load distribution factors for point load and line loads are almost same. Finally, we suggest a simple analytical method, which can determine load distribution factors using normalized deflections by regression analysis for design purposes.

  • Quasi-static three-point bending tests on sandwich beams with expanded metal sheets as core were conducted. Relationships between the force and displacement at the mid-span of the sandwich beams were obtained from the experiments. Numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/EXPLCIT and the results were thoroughly compared with the experimental results. A parametric analysis was performed using a Box-Behnken design (BBD) for the design of experiments (DOE) techniques and a finite element modeling. Then, the influence of the core layers number, size of the cell and, thickness of the substrates was investigated. The results showed that the increase in the size of the expanded metal cell in a reasonable range was required to improve the performance of the structure under bending collapse. It was found that core layers number and size of the cell was key factors governing the quasi-static response of the sandwich beams with lattice cores.

  • As known, concrete classes are described as strength of standard specimens produced and kept in ideal conditions, not including reinforcement and not subjected to any load effect before. Under the circumstances, transforming core strengths to the standard specimen strength is necessary and considering all parameters, affected on the core strength, is inevitable. In fact, effects of the reinforcement and the load history on concrete strength are generally neglected when these mentioned transforms are performing. The main purpose of this paper is investigating the effects of the reinforcement and the load history on the core strength. This investigation is experimentally performed on cores drilled from specimens having different keeping conditions, reinforced, unreinforced, subjected to bending and central pressure in various proportions of failure load during specified periods. Obtained results show that the importance of these effects cannot be neglected.

  • This work focused on aluminum foam sandwich (AFS) with different foam core densities and different face-sheet thicknesses subjected to constant amplitude three-point bending cyclic loading to study its fatigue performance. The experiments were conducted out by a high frequency fatigue test machine named GPS-100. The experimental results showed that the fatigue life of AFS decreased with the increasing loading level and the structure was sensitive to cyclic loading, especially when the loading level was under 20%. S-N curves of nine groups of AFS specimens were obtained and the fatigue life of AFS followed three-parameter lognormal distribution well. AFS under low cyclic loading showed pronounced cyclic hardening and the static strength after fatigue test increased. For the same loading level, effects of foam core density and face-sheet thickness on the fatigue life of AFS structure were trade-off and for the same loading value, the fatigue life of AFS increased with aluminum foam core density or face-sheet thickness monotonously. Core shear was the main failure mode in the present study.

  • Nonlinear forced vibration behaviors of sandwich plates having graphene platelets (GPL) based face sheets have been researched in this article. Possessing low weight together with low stiffness, square honeycomb cores are mostly constructed by aluminum. Herein, the square shaped core has been fortified by two skins of GPL-based type in such a way that the skins have uniform and linearly graded GPL dispersions. The square shaped core has the effective material specification according to the relative density concept. The whole formulation has been represented based upon classical plate theory (CPT) while harmonic balance approach is applied for solving the problem and plotting the amplitude-frequency curves. The forced vibration behaviors of such plates are influenced by square-shaped core and the relative density, skin's height and GPL fortification.
