  • Most of the reactor trips in Korean NPPs related to core protection systems were caused not because of proximity of boiling crisis and, consequently, a damage in the core, but due to particular miscalculations or component failures related to the core protection system. The most common core protection system applied in Korean NPPs is the Core Protection Calculator System (CPCS), which is installed in OPR1000 and APR1400 plants. It generates a trip signal to scram the reactor in case of low Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio (DNBR) or high Local Power Density (LPD). However, is a reactor trip necessary to protect the core? Or could a fast power reduction be enough to recover the DNBR/LPD without a scram? In order to analyze the online calculation of DNBR/LPD, and the use of fast power reduction as trip avoidance methodology, a concept of CPCS with fast power reduction function was developed in Matlab® Simulink using systems engineering approach. The system was validated with maximum of 0.2% deviation from the reference and the dynamic deviation was maximum of 12.65% for DNBR and 6.72% for LPD during a transient of 16,000 seconds.

  • During magnetic inrush or over-excitation, saturation of the core in a transformer draws a large exciting current, which can cause mal-operation of a differential relay. This paper proposes a modified current differential relay for transformer protection. The relay calculates core-loss current from the induced voltage and the core-loss resistance; the relay calculates the magnetizing current from the core flux and the magnetization curve. Finally, the relay obtains the modified differential current by subtracting the core-loss and the magnetizing currents from the conventional differential current. Comparison study with the conventional differential relay with harmonic blocking is also shown. The proposed technique not only discriminates magnetic inrush and over-excitation from an internal fault, but also improves the speed of the conventional relay.

  • During magnetic inrush or over-excitation, saturation of the core in a transformer draws a significant exciting current, which can cause malfunction of a current-differential relay. This paper proposes a modified-current-differential relay for transformer protection. The relay calculates the core-loss current from the induced voltage and the core-loss resistance as well as the magnetizing current from the core flux and the magnetization curve. Finally, the relay obtains the modified differential current by subtracting the core-loss and the magnetizing currents from the conventional differential current. A comparative study of the conventional differential relay with harmonic blocking is presented. The proposed relay not only discriminates magnetic inrush and over-excitation from an internal fault, but also improves the relay speed.

  • During magnetic inrush or over-excitation saturation of the core in a transformer draws a large exciting current. This can cause mal-operation of a differential relay. This paper proposes a modified current differential relay for transformer protection. In order to cope with the remanent flux at the beginning. the start of saturation of the core is detected and the core flux at the instant is estimated by inserting the differential current into a magnetization curve. Then, this core flux value can be used to calculate the core flux. The proposed relay calculates the core-loss current from the induced voltage and the core-loss resistance; the relay calculates the magnetizing current from the core flux and the magnetization curve. Finally, the relay obtains the modified differential current by subtracting the core-loss current and the magnetizing current from the conventional differential current. The proposed technique not only discriminates magnetic inrush and over-excitation from an internal fault, but also improves the speed of the conventional relay.

  • This paper presents an efficient secure scan design technique which is based on a fake key and IEEE 1149.1 instruction to protect secret key from scan-based side channel attack for an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) core embedded on an System-on-a-Chip (SoC). Our proposed secure scan design technique can be applied to crypto IP core which is optimized for applications without the IP core modification. The IEEE 1149.1 standard is kept, and low area, low power consumption, very robust secret-key protection and high fault coverage can be achieved compared to the existing methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to detect the protection area around the Geum-buk and Geum-nam Mountains for making a sustainable ecological network. The protection area in the Geum-buk and Geum-nam Mountains was analyzed by using spatial data and a field survey for landscape conservation purposes. A survey scope was fixed using digital elevation model, and the protection area was finally determined based on the parcel map called as the Korea Land Information System (KLIS). Here we have several conclusions in this study. First, spatial data used in this study were a map of ecological and natural degree (MEND), forest distribution map, elevation map, slope map, and several maps for the protection area assigned by laws regarding to the natural resources. Second, we used 4 alternatives to determine the best choice for showing the ecological network in the study area. One alternative (alt. 3) of 4 ones was finally chosen as the best condition for making the ecological network. The condition in elevation and slope was a little modified to a lower level in alt, 3. The result derived from alt, 3 reflected the continuity and connectivity in the ecological network and we estimate that the protection area can protect the core area using the buffer zone around the ecological network. Finally the parcel-based protection area in the Geum-buk and Geum-nam Mountains had $493.92km^2$ of the core area, and $233.99km^2$ of the buffer zone, which means the parcel-based protection area increased by $97.76km^2$ in the core area, but decreased by $76.61km^2$ as of in the topographical map.

  • Core safety limits define reactor operating conditions and parameters that will assure fuel rod and reactor system's integrity. Limiting safety system settings (LSSS) programmed into reactor protection system (RPS) then ensure a rapid reactor trip to prevent or suppress conditions which might violate the core safety limits. Generation of the LSSS must properly take into account uncertainties in both calculated and measured parameters in order to assure, with an appropriate degree of confidence, that the RPS will protect the core safety limits. Reviewed in this report are Westinghouse RPS setpoint generation philosophy, methodology of safety limit development and LSSS generation procedure. The Westinghouse RPS trip setpoint generation methodology has been established based on the calculation of core safety limits and the selection of LSSS allowing appropriate uncertainties in a conservative manner. Such conservative values of setpoint assure a high degree of core protection against fuel melting and occurrence of DNB.

  • This paper proposes a modified current differential relay for transformer protection unaffected by the remanent flux. The relay uses the same restraining current as a conventional relay, but the differential current is modified to compensate for the effects of the exciting current. To cope with the remanent flux, before saturation, the relay calculates the core-loss current and uses it to modify the measured differential current. When the core then enters saturation, the initial value of the flux is obtained by inserting the modified differential current at the start of saturation into the magnetization cure. Thereafter, the actual core flux is then derived and used in conjunction with the magnetization curve to calculate the magnetizing current. A modified differential current is then derived that compensates for the core-loss and magnetizing currents. The performance of the proposed differential relay was compared against a conventional differential relay. Results indicate that the modified relay remained stable during severe magnetic inrush and over-excitation because the exciting current was successfully compensated. This paper concludes by implementing the relay on a hardware platform based on a digital signal processor. The relay discriminates magnetic inrush and over-excitation from an internal fault and is not affected by the level of remanent flux.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to extract international classification of functioning, disability, and health (ICF) core sets for measuring functional status in acute stroke patients, and to evaluate clinical applicability of the core sets. Methods: A set of 22 ICF items on functional status in acute stroke patients were extracted from the Korean general ICF core sets and ICF core sets for stroke patients. The extracted ICF functional items were assessed at the time of admission and discharge among 100 stroke patients who were admitted in a university hospital. Results: Comparing to functional status at admission of acute stroke patients, the overall functional status at discharge was improved. However, functions on defecation, skin protection, and relationship with immediate family at the time of discharge were not significantly changed. Conclusion: The set of ICF functional items identified in this study may be reliable and valid to assess acute stoke patients' body functions, activities and participation and environmental factors in the holistic and comprehensive nursing context. Nursing interventions on bowel elimination and skin protection for acute stroke patients need to be developed.
