  • In this paper a transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation of fine Cu precipitates distributed randomly in Al-2.5Cu-1.5Mg wt.% alloy is first reported. This new observation happened to occur when an ion milling was peformed to remove oxides on the specimen, particularly, aged 100 hours at $150^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile the oxides were identified to be $Cu_2O$ particles. For this work involved with analysis of diffraction rings, the formulation of the electron diffraction rings pattern for powder particles was made. Finally the significance of this unexpected ion milling effort on the alloy was discussed

  • The present paper describes a procedure for separation, preconcentration and determination of trace amount of copper in natural water samples by using 2-mercaptobenzimidazol as the complexing agent. The proposed method is based on the surfactant aggregation formed on γ-alumina by mixing sodium dodecyl sulfate and γ-alumina in water; 2-mercaptobenzimidazol was incorporated into inner hydrophobic part of produced ad-micelles in acidic media to produce an assemble suitable for preconcentration and determination of copper ion. Optimum experimental conditions for adsorption of μg/ml levels of copper ions from aqueous solution by the adsorbent have been reported. The copper ions were quantitively adsorbed by the sorbent over the pH range of 7.1-8.0 and were quantitatively desorbed afterward by using sulfosalycilic acid as the eluent. The determination of copper was not interfered in the presence of common metal ions. The procedure was applied for analysis of river water sample. Relative standard deviation was found to be 4.91%.

  • The electrochemical behaviors and analytical application of copper-1,5,9,13-tetrathiacyclohexadecane[16-ane-$S_4$] complex in acetonitrile(AN) solution have been investigated by the use of DC polarography and differential pulse polarography. Thus the formation constant of copper complex was $10^{3.51}$. Copper (Ⅱ) ion was found to form complex of 1-to-1 composition with [16-ane-$S_4$]. In addition, reduction step was irreversible and the reduction current was diffusion controlled. And the effect of concentration of the salting-out reagent and chelating agent and pH of aqueous phase on the determination of copper (Ⅱ) was investigated and diverse ion effect was discussed. By salting-out extraction technique, we can be determined until the concentration of copper (Ⅱ) of 60 ppb.

  • Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) produced using municipal solid waste was pyrolyzed to produce RDF char. For the first time, the RDF char was used to remove aqueous copper, a representative heavy metal water pollutant. Activation of the RDF char using steam and KOH treatments was performed to change the specific surface area, pore volume, and the metal cation quantity of the char. N2 sorption, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the char. The optimum pH for copper removal was shown to be 5.5, and the steam-treated char displayed the best copper removal capability. Ion exchange between copper ions and alkali/alkaline metal cations was the most important mechanism of copper removal by RDF char, followed by adsorption on functional groups existing on the char surface. The copper adsorption behavior was represented well by a pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum copper removal capacity was determined to be 38.17 mg/g, which is larger than those of other low-cost char adsorbents reported previously.

  • In the previous study, the composition ratios of the Cu-sulfa drugs complexes determined by gravimetric and solvent extraction method reported. In this paper, the continuous variations method has been used to know whether the complexes are simple complexes or chelates, and to recertify the composition ratios of the complexes at pH 7-8. It has been certified that the ratio of $Cu^{+2}$ ion to sulfa drugs in 1:2 from the result of this experiment.

  • AES was used to study oxygen adsorption due to the oxygen exposure at 300\ulcorner temperature and segregation of impurities due to annealing on polycrystal copper surface. The intensity of peak of CuM2, 3VV and CuL3 VV increased with annealing time and the peak of CKLL increased after Ar ion bombardment. The effect of oxygen adsorption on copper surface at 300\ulcorner was verified by the decreased of peak of CuM2, 3VV and CuL3 VV as oxygen exposure increase. The binding energy of copper atoms gradualy shifts from 0.7eV to 1.5eV of copper atoms gradually shifts from 0.7eV to 1.5eV after a oxygen exposure. After the oxygen exposure, the width at half the height of CuM2, 3VV is larger 2V*C/S by the effect of chemical liaison of the copper aton with oxygen atom.

  • Reference electrodes are generally implemented for the purpose of monitoring the cathodic protection potentials of buried or immersed metallic structures. In the market, many types of reference electrodes are available for this purpose, such as saturated calomel, silver/silver chloride and copper/copper sulfate. These electrodes contain a porous ceramic junction plate situated in the cylindrical body bottom to permit ionic flux between the internal electrolyte (of the reference electrode) and the external electrolyte. In this work, the copper/copper sulfate reference electrode was modified by replacing the porous ceramic junction plate for a metallic platinum wire. The main purpose of this modification was to avoid the ion copper transport from coming from the inner reference electrode solution into the surrounding electrolyte, and to mitigate the copper plating on the coupon surfaces. Lab tests were performed in order to compare the performance of the two mentioned reference electrodes. We verified that the experimental errors associated with the measurements conducted with developed reference electrode would be negligible, as the platinum surface area exposed to the surrounding electrolyte and/or to the reference electrolyte are maintained as small as possible.

  • Nanomaterials, which ranges in size from 1 to 100 nm, have been used to create uqnique devices at the nanoscale level possessing novel physical and chemical functional properties. However, the toxicities of nanomaterials have not been fully tested and the risk of nanomaterials is emerging issues in these days. In this study, the cytotoxicity of copper nanoparticles was tested in cultured human bronchial epithelial cells. As a results, copper nanoparticles showed cytotoxicity similar with cupric ion and the apoptotic mechanisms of DNA fragmentation and caspase-3 activation were involved. Induction of heme oxygenase-1 and thioredoxin reductase by copper nanoparticles indicated that cytotoxicity of copper nanoparticles is likely to be mediated through oxidative stress.

  • Copper coating on graphite powders was carried out by cementation process from copper sulfate solution. Effects of operation variables such as copper ion concentration, stirring speed, reaction time and temperature were investigated to obtain optimum conditions for continuous and uniform copper coating on graphite powders. The activation energy of the copper coating process was found to be 3. 59kcal/mole.
