  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Mindfulness-based Emotion Management Training for adolescents immersed in self-harm behaviors. Methods: The participants were 61 middle school students located in Seoul. Thirty students were assigned to the Mindfulness-based Emotion Management Training (M-EMT) group and the other 31 students were assigned to the waitlist group. The students in the M-EMT group participated in a total of 12 sessions, twice a week, for 6 weeks. The modules of the program comprised of mindfulness for emotion, mindfulness for behavior/impulse, mindfulness for thought, and coping with self-harming behavior. The Distress Tolerance Scale, Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and Scale Suicidal Ideation were assessed at baseline and post-intervention. Results: Compared to the waitlist group, the intervention group exhibited a statistically significant improvement in distress tolerance and cognitive emotion regulation and a statistically significant reduction in self-harming behaviors and suicidal ideation. Conclusion: These results support the hypothesis that mindfulness-based emotional management training has a positive effect on reducing self-harming behaviors and enhancing distress tolerance and cognitive emotional regulation.

  • The purpose of this study is to offer basic data on cosmetics by investigating college women's purchasing and use behaviors regarding cosmetics according to their experience with side effects. A questionnaire was administered to 351 college women in the Seoul and Kyoung-in areas. The data were analyzed with SPSS Statistics V22.0 using frequency, ${\chi}^2$-test, and t-test. The results are as follows. First, 72.6% of surveyed women reported experiencing side effects from cosmetics. The largest side effects were acne and boils, and the primary ways of coping with these side effects were discontinuing use and using other products. Second, the group that experienced cosmetics' side effects used brands that were more expensive and eco-friendly than the group without side effects. Third, the group that experienced side effects continued to use the product more than the group without side effects. The primary reason for continued use was efficacy, and the reasons for discontinued use were efficacy and curiosity. Fourth, the side-effects group proactively identified cosmetics ingredients more than the non-side-effects group. Specifically, they checked the major components, the function, and for any hazardous ingredients. Fifth and finally, 98.3% of survey respondents purchased and used functional cosmetics. The group that had experience with side effects used more functional cosmetics than the group without side effects.

  • Through the recent pandemic, this study examined the theory of awe, which explains that external crises affect people's value systems and consequential behaviors. During the pandemic, some consumers expressed a growing interest in equity, while others pursued the consumption of materialistic items, such as luxurious fashion goods. According to the theory of awe, both of these phenomena could be coping responses to the crisis. Based on this, we attempted to understand the psychological processes behind the pandemic's effect on these two different consumers value systems thereby influencing sustainable consumption intentions: one through the new ecological paradigm (NEP) that emphasizes consumers' increased consciousness, and the other through materialism that emphasizes consumers' self-centered side. The results obtained from a survey of 382 U.S. consumers revealed that the degree of pandemic experience increased consumers' NEP and materialism, which also increased their economic and ethical CSR expectations. These CSR expectations then enhanced consumers' sustainable consumption intentions. As sustainable consumption and CSR are important agendas for the fashion industry, this study will provide useful insights for researchers and practitioners in the fashion field.

  • Objectives: Nowadays, the multicultural families make up significant portion of Korean population and communities. Successful re-settling in a new country can be difficult, particularly when there are disparities in dietary behavior compared to home country. The objective of the study was to investigate the dietary behavior of marriage migrant women according to their nationality in multicultural families. Methods: The primary research was conducted targeting 94 marriage migrant women who came from China (40.4%), Vietnam (26.6%), and other countries except for Japan (33.0%). We investigated their dietary behavior, such as eating attitude and food choice behavior for Korea acculturation. We also studied dietary behavior among 14 selected subjects who had high level of integration and assimilation acculturation patterns by administering the Focus Group Interview (FGI). Results: The multicultural families had more integration acculturation patterns, which could have been influenced by their nationality. Vietnamese origin has the highest cultural adaptation as marginalization pattern. The common types of Korea acculturation were integration ($3.03{\pm}1.08$), separation ($3.10{\pm}0.59$), marginalization ($3.10{\pm}0.58$), followed by assimilation ($2.84{\pm}0.51$). There were significant differences in the four types of acculturation by marriage immigrant women's country of origin (p<0.05). According to dietary behavior, 'eliminating hunger' was the most important value in a meal. Chinese marriage migrant women, who had higher level of food intake attitude significantly, also considered 'being healthy' an important value. Regarding food choice behavior, Vietnamese had lowest frequency of homeland food intake. Most of marriage immigrant women were satisfied with the Korean food, and need for education was very high with interest for cooking, good nutrition, and managing their children's dietary life. Conclusions: Coping with a change in dietary behavior is one of the biggest transitional difficulties, and family members may need support to find their familiar food items and to continue their cultural food choice behavior in the local areas. Further researches with quantitative and qualitative analysis are needed to understand the effect of dietary behavior for acculturation in multicultural families.

  • This study aimed to expand and reconstruct the Driving Behavior Determinants' factors in order to confirm the relationship between Driving Behavior Determinants(DBD) and drivers' reckless driving behavior level. To expand the structure of DBD, drivers anger, introversion and type A characteristics were added, which were never considered as related factors in existing DBD studies before. The correlations between the new factors of DBD and reckless driving behavior(includes driver's personal records of driving experiences for the last three years) were verified. A factor analysis result showed us that new DBD questionnaire consists of five factors such as, 'Problem Evading', 'Benefits/Sensation Seeking', 'Anti-personal Anxiety', 'Anti-personal Anger', and 'Aggression'. Also, reckless driving behavior consists of 'Speeding', 'Inexperienced Coping', 'Wild Driving', 'Drunken Driving', and 'Distraction'. The result of correlation between the DBD and reckless driving behavior indicates that inappropriate level of DBD is highly correlated with dangerous driving behavior and strong possibilities of traffic accidents. Based on these results, we might be able to discriminate drivers according to DBD level and predict their reckless driving behavior through a standardization procedure. Futhermore, this will make us to provide drivers differentiated safety education service.

  • This study was conducted to examine factors in relation to attitude and behavior of drug abuse in middle school students, and provide guidelines for drug education for adolescents. The summary of results was as follows: 1. The mean of attitude about drug abuse were 3.44 (1st graders), 3.40 (2nd graders), 3.20 (3rd graders) of full score 4.00. Attitude about drug abuse related to sex in girls is more desirable than boys' (p<0.001). 2. 3rd grade students experienced smoking and alcohol use to the highest degree in the last one month. Boys had more experiences of smoking and alcohol use than girls. Most motivations of students' drug abuse were curiosity and the influence of peer: 3. The higher the scores of self-assertion is, the higher the scores of attitude about drug abuse is. And the higher the scores of problem solving ability is, the higher the scores of attitude about drug abuse is. 4. Self-assertion and problem solving ability were positively correlated with attitude about drug abuse. Otherwise, the attitude about drug abuse was negatively correlated with drug abuse behavior. 5. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor to drug abuse behavior was the attitude about drug abuse, Problem solving ability and self-assertion is accountable factor to the attitude about drug abuse. This result indicated that effective problem solvers or self-asserters have desirable attitude about drug abuse and less possibility to abuse drug. In conclusions, school drug education is necessary to enhance the ability of self-assertion by which students cope against peer pressure and problem solving ability by which students identify or discover effective strategies of coping with problematic situations encountered in daily living.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarity the concept of health insensitivity using Hybrid model, which consists of three phases: theoretical, empirical, and analytic. In the theoretical phase, the definitions of health insensitivity were searched in korean dictionary and examples used in the websites because the concept of health insensitivity has never been studied before. Two dimensions of health insensitivity emerged out from this investigation were cognitive and behavioral. And then a working definition of health insensitivity was established. The sub-concepts and related factors of health insensitivity were identified through the extensive reviews of the literature focusing on two dimensions of cognitive and behavioral. In the empirical phase, in order to obtain description of health insensitivity, face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted with nine persons who are not related to professional health care. Grounded theory approach was applied to analyze these qualitative data. In the final analytic phase, theoretical results and empirical results were analyzed in the integrated way and a theoretical framework of health insensitivity was established. A refined definition of health insensitivity was that decreased health risk perception in cognitive dimension and conduction of the unhealthy behaviors in behavioral dimension. Sub-concepts of decreased health risk perception were optimistic bias and decreased general fear. Sub-concepts of unhealthy behavior were doing health threatening behavior and not doing desirable health behavior. The contact of health information was a causal condition of health insensitivity. Optimistic disposition, health locus of control, and avoidance coping style were intervening conditions of health insensitivity. Three types of health insensitivity were identified: unconcern or ignorance type, optimistic bias type, and cognitive dissonance type. Finally, The implications of these findings for further research and nursing practice are discussed.

  • The relationship of maternal separation anxiety, availability of support system and child gender to initial preschool adjustment was examined. Data were collected on 72 middle-class Korean children(35 boys, 37 girls) between the ages of 31 months and 60 months who were entering preschool. Subjects were from intact families, all with non-working mothers. Mothers completed the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale(MSAS) and indicated the number of extended family members in the home as an index of social support. Classroom teachers completed the Preschool Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ) for each child after the first 2 weeks and again after 6 weeks of school. Each child was observed by the research team during the first 2 weeks of school and again after the 6th-week using the Child Observation System (COS). Applying the COS observed behavior was classified as being in the dependent, neutral, or active mode. All instruments were culturally relevant as validated by Korean experts. Maternal Separation Anxiety was a significant predictor for girls only, accounting for 11% of initial COS variance (p=<.05). In contrast, social support was a significant predictor for boys only, accounting for 28% of initial PBQ variance when entered after MSAS(p=.005). A significant difference between initial and 6th-week adjustment was obtained in the expected direction on the COS with behavior improving with time (t=-4.06, p=.001). Although a significant difference between initial and 6th-week PBQ adjustment was also obtained (t=-3.63, p=.001), it was not in the direction expected, problematic behavior were found to increase with time. Cultural and developmental factors help explain the findings. Given the patrilineal social system in Korea, boys are highly preferred over girls. Thus the at-home support system, comprised primarily of grandparents, may have a significant influence on school adjustment particularly of first-born sons. In contrast, since girls are viewed as fragile and vulnerable, mothers may express greater separation anxiety about girls. Finally, as would be expected, older children may be able to develop coping skills more readily than younger ones, as child adjustment on the COS significanlty improved over the 6-week period.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore violent experiences of home visiting health care workers in Korea. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from 1,640 health care workers. Data collection was done between September 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Results: Of the respondents, 70.6% had experienced work-related violence. Shouting (51.9%) was the most common verbal violence, followed by verbalizing sexual remarks to the health care workers (19.0%) and touching the hands (16.5%), the most common acts relating to sexual harassment. Of the respondents who had experienced violence, 50.9% told their peers about the incidents. However, the major reasons why they did not report these incidents was due to the fact that they felt it was useless to file reports and that they expected such incidents to occur as part of their job. The majority of the respondents (86.4%) wanted education on how to deal with such violence at work. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that efforts should be made to increase awareness and to minimize violence in the workplace. Also, educational programs should be designed to improve knowledge and to prevent workplace violence.
