Artotrogus gordoni n. sp. (Copepoda: Siphonostomatoida: Artotrogidae) Assocaited with the Bryozoan Schizosmittina cinctipora (Hincks) from New Zealand

  • Artotrogus gordoni n. sp. is described as an associate of the bryzoan Schizosmittina cinctipora (Hincks, 1885) collected from an intertidal shore in New Zealand. The new species is similar to A. sardae McKinnon but distinguishable from it by the different shapes of antennule where the first segment is the longest and urosome where the anal somite is distinctly narrower than the genital double somite and posterolateral processes on the genital double somite which is tapered and much more developed than in A. sardae.

  • Five freshwater harpacticoid species of the genus Bryocamptus are identified as one of the serial taxonomic studies on the family Canthocamptidae in South Korea: B, zschokkei caucasicus (Borutzky, 1930), B. nivalis (Willey, 1925), B, pacificus Ishida, 1992, B. vejdovskyi (Mrazek, 1893) and B. umiatensis Wilson, 1958. Bryocamptus pacificus, B. vedjovskyi and B. umiatensis are newly known from Korea. A key to the species of the genus Bryocamptus in Korea is provided.

  • Population ecology (Ecological characteristics) of Squalidus japonicus coreanus from the Namhan River(Yangpyeong-gun Yangpyeong-eup Changde-ri), Gyeonggi-do, Korea were investigated from January to December 2011. Short barbel gudgeon inhabits habitats run of the lower river. The stream bed was mostly covered sand. Their current velocities were 0.14~1.38m/sec and depths were 80~120cm. The sex ratio of female to male was 1 : 0.82. It is presumed that the spawning season is from June to July and water temperatures were $18.5{\sim}24.3^{\circ}C$. Sexually matured individuals appeared over the two year of age. Frequency analysis of total length indicated that the group with 34~50mm in total length was one year old, the 51~74mm was two years old, and the group over 75mm was three years old. The average number of eggs in the ovaries was estimated as 1,871 per matured female. Stomach content of S. japonicus coreanus were Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Rotatoria, Crustaceae, Copepoda, Ephemeroptera, Diptera, and Nematoda. omnivorous, mainly feeds on benthic invertebrates such as chironomidae larvae.

The Spatio-temporal Distribution of Zooplankton Communities in the Northern Yellow Sea During Autumn and Winter (가을-겨울철 황해 북부의 동물플랑크톤 시공분포 특성)

  • The joint cruises of six times between Korea and China were carried out for a better understanding of the environmental and oceanographical characteristics of the Yellow Sea for 6 years from 1998 to 2003. Zooplankton samples were collected one time per year at 24 stations on 3 lines of the Yellow Sea. The aim of this study is to understand the seasonal fluctuation of zooplankton community in the Yellow Sea. There is no trend on the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton. Copepoda, the major taxon of the Yellow Sea, was high in distribution in the eastern part and Chaetognatha in the western part of the Yellow Sea. In this results, the dominant copepods were Calanus sinicus, Paracalanus parvus s.l., Oithona atlantica, and Corycaeus affinis during the study periods. The density fluctuation of these dominant species may be an important factor in determining the fisheries resource of the Yellow Sea.

  • Conthocamptus mirabilis Sterba is redescribed on the basis of the material newly collected from the type locality near Bekijing, China, with an evaluation of the variability of several characters. C. mirabilis possesses the plesiomorphic characters of the round and narrow hyaline membrane and the unmodified outer terminal furcal setae, while it also bears the apomorphic ones of the male-type caudal rami in females and the modified outer terminal setae of male leg 4 exopod. the peculiar dorsal keel ornamented with spinule array on the female's caudal rami is the most significant feature differentiating this species from its relatives of the mirabilis group, which turned out to be a species group of closely related and largely allopatric or parapatric species. Affinities with the allies of the species group are discussed, and the morphological discrepancies differentiating the Japanese population are enumerated.

  • Changes of feeding habitat and feeding organ of a land-locked sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis related to their growth process were investigated in the Lake Okjeong, Sannae-myeon, Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do, Korea from 2004 to 2005. In the lake, the post-larvae from 25 to 40 mm in standard length fed mainly on animal organisms such as Copepoda, Branchiopoda and Rotatoria. Also, the juveniles from 50 to 60 mm (SL) fed on Chironomidae of Diptera, Copepoda and Branchiopoda. However, the juvenile from 60 to 70 mm (SL) in the Churyeong Stream fed on animal organisms and aquatic algae, the immature fishes more than 70 mm (SL) fed on only periphyton such as Synedra, Cymbella, Navicula and Pinnularia. Also, the feeding organs of the tooth and stomach were changed according to its growth and food change.

  • Zooplankton community dynamics were studied after establishment of an artificial vegetation island (AVI) in Lake Paldang, from April 2005 to November 2006. There were distinct seasonal and inter-annual changes of total zooplankton abundance at the survey site. Total zooplankton abundance rapidly increased in spring and fall, while it remained low throughout winter. During summer, the dynamics of zooplankton community seemed to be largely affected by hydrological parameters such as, precipitation and inflow. Total zooplankton abundance and biomass below AVI was much higher than that of pelagic zone (L1) in Lake Paldang. Copepoda and cladocera represented the main bulk of the zooplankton community from summer to fall at the both sites. Copepods were more dominant at AVI area, while cladocera were more dominant at pelagic zone (L1). Water quality, prey and habitat condition, species competition between zooplankton seemed to play important roles in dominance of the copepoda and cladocera in zooplankton community at AVI area. Our results conclude that artificial vegetation island provide the stable habitat and besides phytoplankton, diverse food to zooplankton, and consequently influence the diversity and richness of zooplankton community.

  • Structure and succession of zooplankton community studied by hydraulic and ecological characteristics targeting the five lakes in the Han river system from March to December 2008. Results separated by river-type lake and lake-type lake depending on the type of hydraulic, Paldang lake and Cheongpyeong lake were river-type lake, while Chungju lake, Hoengseong lake and Doam lake was lake-type lake. The Paldang lake was a eutrophic lake, zooplankton community density and species number were the most among the five lakes. Relative dominance of the rotifera was the largest and the yearly first dominant species was a small cladocera Bosmina longirostris. The Cheongpyeong lake was a mesotrophic-eutrophic lake, hydraulic characteristics and zooplankton community changes were similar the Paldang lake. Relative dominance of the cladocera was the largest and the yearly first dominant species was a small cladocera Bosmina longirostris. The Chungju lake was a oligotrophic-mesotrophic lake, zooplankton community density was the least among the five lakes. Relative dominance of the copepoda was the largest and the yearly first dominant species was a large cladocera Daphnia galeata. The Hoengseong lake was a oligotrophic-mesotrophic lake, relative dominance of the rotifera was the largest and the yearly first dominant species was a small cladocera Bosmina longirostris. The Doam lake was a mesotrophic-eutrophic lake, zooplankton community density showed dramatic difference at the investigation time. Relative dominance of the rotifera was the largest and the yearly first dominant species was the copepoda Nauplius.

  • The complete postembryonic development of nauplius stages of Paramphiascella vararensis T. Scotf (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) is described and illustrated based on specimens cultured in laboratory. The nauplii of P. vararensis feed on powder of a green algae, Ulva perusa. This species is metamorphosed to the stages of nauplius. Development from the nauplius stage to the nauplius stage take about 12 days under culture conditions of 33-34 ppt of salinity, 22-23$^{\circ}$C of temperature and feed on the algal powder. In the nauplius stages of P. vararensis, the rudiment of maxillule appeares at the third nauplius stage, and maxilla appeares at the fifth nauplius stage.

Spatial distribution of Acartia(Copepoda, Calanoida) species in the southern coastal waters of Korea during summer (하계 남해연안에 출현하는 Acartia속 요각류의 공간 분포)

  • The occurrence patterns of Acartia(Copepoda; Calanoida) species, A. erythraea, A. hongi, A. hudsonica, A. ohtsukai, and A. sinjiensis, were examined in the southern coastal waters of Korea in the summer in August 2012. The Acartia species had different spatial distribution according to environmental factors. A. erythraea showed higher density in a semi-closed bay (Gamak, Masan) where the dissolved oxygen was low (<2 mg L-1). A. sinjiensis showed a high density in a semi-closed bay when the chlorophyll-a concentration was >2 ㎍ L-1. A. ohtsukai showed a high density at water temperatures >26℃ and low salinity <30. A. hongi and A. hudsonica showed at water temperatures <27℃ and high dissolved oxygen (>5 mg L-1). These results suggest that environmental factors (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a concentration) may affect the spatial distribution of Acartia species dominant in the southern coasts of Korea in summer.
