  • This report presents an automatic measurement method of 3-dimensional profiles of free-formed surfaces, by using a touch a touch-trigger contact probe along with a conventional coordinate measuring machine. The method proceeds in three steps; The surface profile under consideration is traced by the probe in an automatic manner, and then its measured data is compensated by considering the actual probe radius. Finally the compensated data is rearranged in the form suitable for the further processings of CAD/CAM applications. Some experimental results are discussed to verify the validity of the method suggested in this study.

  • This paper presents techniques for evaluation and compensation of total measuring errors in a commercial CMM. The probe errors as well as the machine geometric errors are assessed from probing of the mechanical artefacts such as shpere, step, and rings. For the error compensation, the integrated volumetric error equations are considered, including the probe error adn the machine geometric error. The error compensation is performed on the absolute scale coordinate system, in order to overcome the redundant degree of freedom in the CMM with multi-axis probe. A interface box and corresponding software driver are developed for data intercepting/correction between the machine controller and machine, thus the volumetric errors can be compensated in real time with minimum interference to the operating software and hardware of a commercial CMM. The developed system applied to a practical CMM installed on the shop floor, and demonstrated its performance.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish an effective inspection system by using OMM (On-Machine Measurement) system based PC-NC. This system can reduce manufacturing lead time because a workpiece is inspected at every machining process and the manufacturing system which includes inspection faculty is able to realize on-line process on CNC machining center. The proposed OMM system is composed of a few algorithms for determination of inspection parameters. It is accomplished by determining the number of measuring points, their location, measuring path using fuzzy logic, Hammersley's method, TSP (Traveling Salesperson Problem) algorithm. The inspection feature applied to this system is based on machining feature. This method is tested by simulation and experiment that are analyzed measuring data and geometry tolerance.

  • A feature-based inspection planning system is proposed in this research to develop more efficient measuring methodology for the OMM(On-Machine Measurement) or CMM(coordinate Measuring Machine) for complicated workpiece having many primitive form features. This paper is proposed solution that optimum inspection sequence of the objective features. The sequences are determined by analyzing the feature information such as the nearest relationship and the possible probe-approach direction(PAD) of the features, and forming feature groups. A series of heuristic rules are developed to accomplish it. Also, each feature is decomposed into its constituent geometric elements for inspection process, and then the number of sampling points, location of the measuring points, optimum probing path are determined.

  • This paper proposes an error compensation method that improves accuracy with geometry information of injection molding parts. Geometric information can give an improved accuracy in reverse engineering. Measuring data can not lead to get accurate geometric model, including errors of physical parts and measuring machines. Measuring data include errors which can be classified into two types. One is molding error in product, the other is measuring error. Measuring error includes optical error of laser scanner, deformation by probe forces of CMM and machine error. It is important to compensate these in reverse engineering. Least square method(LSM) provides the cloud data with a geometry compensation, improving accuracy of geometry. Also, the functional shape of a part and design concept can be reconstructed by error compensation using geometry information.

  • The integrity and accuracy of the drilling hole are decided by positional error, diameter error, the roundness, the straightness, the cylindericity, size of the burr, the surface roundness and others. Among these parameters, positional error and diameter error have the most important parameters. The diameter error has been widely studied, but there has been little research done about the positional error due to the difficulty of measuring it. The measurement of hole location and diameter would be performed by CMM(Coordinate Measurement Machine). However, the usage of CMM requires much time and cost. In order to overcome the difficulties, we have developed a hole location and diameter error measuring device using machine vision. The developed measurement device attached to a CNC machine can determine hole quality quickly and easily.

  • Laser scanner are getting used for inspection and reverse engineering in industry such as motors, electronic products, dies and molds. However, due to the lack of efficient scanning technique, the tasks become limited to the low accuracy purpose. The main reasons for this limitation for usefulness are caused from the optical drawback, such as irregular reflection, scanning direction normal to measuring surface, the influence of surface integrity, and other optical disturbances. To overcome these drawback of laser scanner, this study propose the mechanism to reduce the optical trouble by using the 2 kinds of rotational movement axis and by composing the spherical coordinate to scanning the surface keeping normal direction consistently. So, it could be designed and interfaced the measuring device to realize that mechanism, and then it could acquisite the accurate 3D form cloud data. Also, these data are compared with the standard master ball and the data acquisited from the touch point sensor, to evaluate the accuracy and stability of measurement and to demonstrate the implementation of an dental tooth purpose system

  • This paper presents an atomic force probe for triggering coordinate measuring machines(CMMs). A rigorous comparison is made between touch trigger probe and atomic force probe for CMMs. Typical CMMs(touch trigger probe based CMMs) often lead to some errors associated with object curvature and difference in triggering sensitivity. Their applicability is limited only to hard objects. The aim of this work is to develop a trigger sensor for CMMs using atomic force. In order to show the applicability of atomic force as a trigger sensor, a cylindrical shape is measured with a CMM and an atomic force microscope. Three different touch probe heads with different ball sizes are tested. The experiments show that smaller ball provides better results for curved objects. The experimental results also show that the performance of atomic force as a trigger sensor is about that of the smallest ball probe. In addition, experiments are also performed to measure soft objects. Finally, this paper suggests and verifies a trigger sensor using atomic force for CMMs.

  • Optical system needs to be aligned before its undergoing process, is usually shows coma aberrations, which occurred due to imperfection in the lens or other components results in off-axis point sources, appearing to have a tail like a comet. There are some methods to correct coma aberration. In this paper, to correct coma aberration in optical system, using a robot arm type coordinate measuring machine(CMM). CMMs are widely used to measure the form of accuracy of parts and positioning accuracy of systems. Among them, robot arm type CMM has more advantages than the others, such as its mobility and measuring range. However, robot arm type CMM has lower accuracy than cantilever type CMM. To prove robot arm type CMM's accuracy, several factors were suggested in this paper and the final measuring results were compared to a commercial cantilever type CMM. Based on this accuracy, a typical optical system was successfully aligned by using our robot arm type CMM.
