An accurate determination of turbulent fluxes over an urban area is a challenging task due to its morphological diversity and associated flow complexity. In this study, an eddy covariance (EC) method is applied over a highly heterogeneous urban area in a small city (Gongju), South Korea to investigate the quantitative influence of 'coordinate tilt' in determining the turbulent fluxes of sensible heat, latent heat, momentum, and carbon dioxide mass. Two widely-used coordinate transform methods are adopted and applied to eight directional sections centered on the site to analyze a 1-year period EC measurement obtained from the urban site: double rotation (DR) and planar fit (PF) transform. The results show that mean streamline planes determined by the PF method are distinguished from the sections, representing morphological heterogeneity of the site. The sectional pitch angles determined by the DR method also compare well with those in the PF method. Both the PF and DR methods show large variabilities in the determined streamline planes at each directional section, implying that flow patterns may form in a complicate way due to the surface heterogeneity. Resulting relative differences of the turbulent fluxes, defined by $(F_{DR}-F_{PF})/F_{DR}$, are found on average +13% in sensible heat flux, +21% in latent heat flux, +37% in momentum flux, and +26% in carbon dioxide mass flux, which are larger values than those reported previously for fairly homogeneous natural sites. The fractional differences depend significantly on wind direction, showing larger differences in northerly winds at the measurement site. It is also found that the relative fractional differences are negatively correlated with the mean wind speed at both stable/unstable atmospheric conditions. These results imply that EC turbulent fluxes determined over heterogeneous urban areas should be carefully interpreted with considering the uncertainty due to 'coordinate tilt' effect in their applications.
In order to intuitively grasp the earth pressure direction acting on the structure and displacement state, displacement data in the horizontal and vertical directions were processed using the sigmoid function. A displacement coordinate system was set up for each axis. The system can intuitively check the current displacement and assess the management stage of each point. A displacement path can be compiled from continuously recorded points, allowing trends in the displacement's history and stress direction to be known. Analysis of data measured for excavated ground, found that displacement occurred in the direction of destressing at all points, and that the points' management state steady. Similar behavior trends were found among measurement points with high spatial correlation, whereas differing behavior trends occurred among measurement points with low spatial correlation. If the correlation analysis of the precursor and behavior area is performed using the continuously distributed surface settlement data and displacement coordinate system, it will be possible to predict the failure time and area.
Instruments are installed in soft ground improvement projects to manage economic and safe construction. When analyzing data, the amount of settlement data over time can be used to understand the overall ground settlement behavior, but it is difficult to analyze the interrelatedness between measurement points. Therefore, to analyze the relative compressive settlement behavior between measurement points, the settlement amount and velocity were processed and defined as the mean settlement difference index (ASi,j) and the slope difference index (SDIi,j). Plotted in the mean settlement difference index - slope difference index (ASi,j-SDIi,j) coordinate system. As a result of the analysis of the relative compaction subsidence behavior between the measuring points, the relationship between the measuring points in the average subsidence difference index - slope difference index coordinate system moved to area 1 as the compaction was completed. By continuously plotting the movement path of the observation point in the corresponding coordinate system, the relative settlement behavior between the measurement points was analyzed, and it was possible to check whether the settlement behavior of the two measurement points was stable or unstable depending on the direction of the path.
This paper describes the development of on-the-machine measuring(OMM) system which can directly measure the two and three dimensional machined accuracy using a scanning probe in milling machine. Two algorithms, NC program based continuous path(CP) measurement and CAD data assisted point to point(PTP) measurement, are developed for three dimensional measurements, with consideration of the characteristics of the scanning probe. The algorithms are used to develop an auto measuring system. The delveloped system is compared with the CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) in terms of accuracy and repeatability. The OMM system is expected to realize measurement time reduction and hence result in high productivity.
The objective of camera calibration is to obtain the correlation between camera image coordinate and 3-D real world coordinate. Most calibration methods are based on the camera model which consists of physical parameters of the camera like position, orientation, focal length, etc and in this case camera calibration means the process of computing those parameters. In this research, we suggest a new approach which must be very efficient because the artificial neural network(ANN) model implicitly contains all the physical parameters, some of which are very difficult to be estimated by the existing calibration methods. Implicit camera calibration which means the process of calibrating a camera without explicitly computing its physical parameters can be used for both 3-D measurement and generation of image coordinates. As training each calibration points having different height, we can find the perspective projection point. The point can be used for reconstruction 3-D real world coordinate having arbitrary height and image coordinate of arbitrary 3-D real world coordinate. Experimental comparison of our method with well-known Tsai's 2 stage method is made to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Touch trigger probes are widely used for inspection purposed in the CMM(Coordinate meauring machine) or machine tool. The errors introduced by measurement probe are fairy systematic, thus can be calibrated and compensated properly. This paper presents a technique for the error calibration and compensation of the probe errors, which can be easily applicable to the manufacturers and users of the measurement probe. The probe coordinate system is defined for the probe error assessment, and a reference sphere ball is measured, and the probe errors are calibrated. The calibrated probe errors are represented in the 3D error map and 2D error map along probing direction. Detail algorithms for the error compensation are proposed.

A method of the volumetric error measurement and calibration of NC machine tools is studied using an artifact method. In this study, a hole-pate is designed and machined using stainless steel. We tested and applied the hole-plate artifact in a commercial CMM(Coordinate Measuring Machine), after calibration of the hole-plate using a precise CMM. It has been shown that not only the measurement of geometric error components but also the 2D length error calculation in a working volume is available using the hole-pate artifact method. The results of study can also be used in NC machine with touch probe as the same method in CMM.

This paper presents a method to measure a large surface shape using atomic force microscopy, which has been used mostly for measuring over very tiny surfaces. Experiments are performed to measure a step height and a slope of a test sample. The proposed method is rigorously compared with the coordinate measuring machine. The repetition accuracy and the effects of the set point are also studied. The experimental results show that the proposed method is reliable and should be effective to measure both the nano-accuracy surface profile as well as the micro-accuracy global shape of a macro/micro parts using atomic force microscope.

A new mechanical probe for 3-D feature measurement on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) is presented. The probe is composed of the contact stylus and the three-component force sensor. With the stylus mounted on the force sensor, the probe can not only measure 3-D features, but also detect contact force acting on the stylus tip. Furthermore, the probing direction and the actual contact position can be determined by the relationship among three components of contact force to be detected. In this paper, transformation matrix representing the relationship between the external force acting on the stylus tip and the output voltages of measurement gauges is derived and calibrated. The prototype of probe is developed and its availability is investigated through the experimental setup for calibration test of the probe. A series of experimental results show that the proposed probe can be an effective means of improving the accuracy of touch probing on CMM.
