  • In education, innovative ways of teaching and learning are always under development and keep being proposed with advanced concepts since the ancient times. Student-centered learning, problem-based learning and cooperative learning have been three major trends under development in secondary education research and practice more than a decade or so. Combined with advanced information and communication technologies, these trends will greatly transform the way we teach and learn in classroom environment and may change the classroom environment itself, into a more interactive and self-centered coaching type environment. In this study, a smart environment that utilizes advanced information technology devices and network is conceptualized, accommodating requirements contained and proposed in the recent trendy pedagogies. Pedagogical cases discussed in these trends are analyzed in detail, producing requirements for such a learning and coaching environment. These requirements are modeled using unified modeling language, leading to a proposal of a basic architecture for an information system supporting this environment.

  • In this paper, we proposed a simple power allocation scheme to maximize network lifetime. To maximize network lifetime, it is important to allocate power fairly among nodes in a network as well as to minimize total transmitted power. In the proposed scheme, the allocated power is proportional to the residual power and also satisfies the required SNR at destination node. In this paper, we calculate power allocation in "amplify and forward" (AF) model. We evaluated the proposed power allocation scheme using extensive simulation and simulation results show that proposed power allocation obtains much longer network lifetime than the equal power allocation.

  • Most of the initial forms of cooperative robots were intended to repeat simple tasks in a given space. So, they showed no significant difference from industrial robots. However, research for improving worker's productivity and supplementing human's limited working hours is expanding. Also, there have been active attempts to use it as a service robot by applying AI technology. In line with these social changes, we produced a mobile manipulator that can improve the worker's efficiency and completely replace one person. First, we combined cooperative robot with mobile robot. Second, we applied speech recognition technology and deep learning based object detection. Finally, we integrated all the systems by ROS (robot operating system). This system can communicate with workers by voice and drive autonomously and perform the Pick & Place task.

  • The purposes of this study were to inquire the status of academic integrity of the student in mentorship program at a science gifted institute attached to university and to seek the teaching plan of academic integrity. We administered questionnaire to 51 students who passed the enterance exam of mentorship program at the science gifted institute in 2013. The questionnaire consisted of three topics, 1) using reference, 2) purchasing, deputizing & plagiarizing of homework, 3) cooperative learning. As results of survey, students have a ethic in the following order: 'purchasing, deputizing & plagiarizing of homework', 'using reference', and 'cooperative learning'. Especially, the lack of conscious about 'cooperative learning' turned out to be a problem, because students have to research by cooperative learning during mentorship program. And there was no significant correlation between each topic. Finally, there was no correlation between ethical knowledge and degree of practicing it.

  • A cooperative teaming has been taken to consolidate the autonomous motivation of students and to develop a desirable attitude in a mutual cooperative atmosphere. Some studies on the reward effect showed that the reward after the evaluation, in the processes of cooperative learning, worked on students' learning motive directly, and the group reward was effective in learning attitude and the individual reward in academic achievement, respectively. Assuming that the group reward and the individual reward are organized and applied as a complex reward, the effects of rewards will appear, this study examined the effect of the complex reward on academic achievement and teaming attitude. For this study. 2 classes were randomly selected out of a elementary school in Gwangju and the teaming unit was based on chapter 4「The structure and function of plants」 in the 5-1 elementary Science textbook. This research has been done for 4 weeks after the students learned STAD for 8 weeks previously. The learning attitude was examined in pre and post tests, and the academic achievement was inspected twice at 2-week intervals after the pre test. The results were analysized by the SAS program In the case of academic achievement, both groups showed a significant improvement(p<.05). The experimental group showed no significant improvement in the first test, compared with the control group(p>.05), but after 4 weeks, it showed a significant improvement in the second test, compared with the control group(p<.05). From this result, it is identified that the reward should be done for a long time and the individual reward of the complex reward is successful in improving academic achievement. However, in the case of learning attitude, there was no meaningful difference in both groups(p>.05). But the control group showed a significant improvement, compared with the experimental group(p<.05). According to this result, it is indicated that the group reward only is more effective in improving learning attitude and complex reward can decrease the individual competition in experimental group.

  • When 37 7th-graders learned science in cooperative learning environments, their small-group processes were audio/video taped. The verbal behaviors that appeared in cooperative learning processes were categorized, and the relationships between verbal behaviors and academic achievement were investigated. Students' verbal behaviors were classified into learning behaviors and management behaviors. Learning behaviors were further coded into giving help. reading problem, and asking help. Giving help was the most frequent behavior among the categories. In studying zero-order correlation between verbal behaviors and academic achievement, giving help and reading problem were found to have positive relationships with academic achievement. Giving specific content, which is a subcategory of giving help. showed the closest correlation with academic achievement. In studying partial correlation between verbal behaviors and the improvement of academic achievement, only application subtest score. which demands higher-order thinking, was positively related with some verbal behaviors including giving specific content.

  • This study investigated the effects of cooperative learning environments in conceptual change instruction upon students' conception, achievement, learning motivation, attitude toward science instruction, and perception of involvement. Two classes of 8th graders at a co-ed middle school were assigned to the treatment and the comparison groups. They were taught about density, boiling point, freezing point, and solubility for 11 class hours. The treatment group's learning environment involved cooperative conceptual change instructions while the comparison group's environment incorporated individual conceptual change instructions. Mann-Whitney test results revealed that the scores of the conception and achievement test for the treatment group were significantly higher than those for the comparison group. The perceptions of involvement for the treatment group were more positive than those for the comparison group. The scores of the learning motivation test for the treatment group were found to be significantly higher than those for the comparison group based on a two-way ANCOVA analysis. However, attitudes toward science instruction were not found to be significantly different between the two groups.

  • This study investigated the influences of group composition in cooperative computer-assisted instruction (CAI) upon students' conceptual understandings, application abilities, learning motivations, and the perceptions of involvement. Seventh graders (N=97) were selected from a co-ed middle school in Seoul, and taught about 'motion of molecules' for 5 class hours. In the two treatment groups with cooperative CAI strategy, homogeneous and heterogeneous small groups were organized by the previous science achievement. Traditional instructions were administered to the comparison group. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of the conception test for the treatment groups were significantly higher than those for the comparison group. However, there was no difference between the homogeneous and the heterogeneous groups. The scores of the three groups did not differ significantly in the application test and the learning motivation test. However, the perceptions of involvement for the treatment groups were more positive than those for the comparison group.
