모수화된 해면 냉각을 활용한 태풍 모의 실험 (Typhoon Simulation with a Parameterized Sea Surface Cooling)

  • This study investigates the response of a typhoon model to the change of the sea surface temperature (SST) throughout the model integration. The SST change is parameterized as a formulae of which the magnitude is given as a function of not only the intensity and the size but the moving speed of tropical cyclone. The formulae is constructed by referring to many previous observational and numerical studies on the SST cooling with the passage of tropical cyclones. Since the parameterized cooling formulae is based on the mathematical expression, the resemblance between the prescribed SST cooling and the observed one during the period of the numerical experiment is not complete nor satisfactory. The agreements between the prescribed and the observed SST even over the swath of the typhoon passage differ from case to case. Numerical experiments are undertaken with and without prescribing the SST cooling. The results with the SST cooling do not show clear evidence in improving the track prediction compared to those of the without-experiments. SST cooling in the model shows its swath along the incomplete simulated track so that the magnitude and the distribution of the sea surface cooling does not resemble completely with the observed one. However, we have observed a little improvement in the intensity prediction in terms of the central pressure of the tropical cyclone in some cases. In case where the model without the SST treatment is not able to yield a correct prediction of the filling of the tropical cyclone especially in the decaying stage, the pulling effect given by the SST cooling alleviates the over-deepening of the model so that the central pressure approaches toward the observed value. However, the opposite case when the SST treatment makes the prediction worse may also be possible. In general when the sea surface temperature is reduced, the amount of the sensible and the latent heat from the ocean surface become also reduced, which results in the weakening of the storms comparing to the constant SST case. It turns out to be the case also in our experiments. The weakening is realized in the central pressure, maximum wind, horizontal temperature gradient, etc.

  • Geothermal-energy has been getting popular as a natural energy source for green buildings these days. As a result Geothermal Source Heat Pump System (GSHPs) was being recognized effective alternative systems to conventional heating and cooling systems owing to their higher energy utilization efficiency. But GSHPs has not been popularized thereby the large amount of initial cost of the system and insufficiency of studies for economic estimation. Therefore GSHPs are being developed to make up for the weak points that are the large amount of initial cost of the system and much annual electricity consumption. In this paper, economic estimation was conducted by payback period method and it shows that the pay back period of Heat Storage Type GSHPs was calculated 6.8 years compared with the absorption Chiller-Heater system and 8.2 years compared with the Ice storage-Boiler system. Heat Storage Type GSHPs also has the lower annual source energy consumption than the conventional heating and cooling systems because of using nighttime electricity.

곡물냉각기의 성능해석을 위한 시뮬레이션 (Simulation for Performance Analysis of a Grain Cooler)

  • This study was carried out to develop a simulation model with EES(Engineering equation solver) for analyzing the performance of a grain cooler. In order to validate the developed simulation model, several main factors which have affected on the performance of the gain cooler were investigated through experiments. A simulation model was developed in the standard vapor compression cycle, and then this model was modified considering irreversibe factors so that the developed alternate model could predict the actual cycle of a grain cooler. The compressor efficiency in vapor compression cycle considering irreversibility much affected on the coefficient of performance(COP). The COP in the standard vapor compression cycle model was greatly as high as about 6.50, but the COP in an alternative model considering irreversibility was as low as about 3.27. As a result of comparison between the actual cycle and the vapor compression cycle considering irreversibility, the difference of pressure at compressor outlet(inlet) was a little by about 48kPa (8.8kPa), the temperatures of refrigerant at main parts of the grain cooler were similar. and the temperature of chilled air was about 8$\^{C}$ in both. The model considering irreversibility could predict performance of the grain cooler. The theoretical period required to chill grain of 1,383kg from the initial temperature 24$\^{C}$ to below 11$\^{C}$ was about 55 hours 30 minutes, and the actual period required in a grain bin was about 58 hours. The difference between the predicted and an actual period was about 2 hours 30 minutes. The cooling performance predicted by the developed model could well estimate the cooling period required to chill the grain.

  • Coal oil is widely used as a home heating fuel for portable and installed coal oil heaters. Today, Coal oil is widely used as fuel for jet engines and some rocket engines in several grades. This paper describes the performance characteristics according to the compression ratio of spark ignition engine fuelled with coal oil. As a result, the following knowledge is obtained: As the compression ratio is decreased, there is an increase in torque, indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), heat release rate, and brake thermal efficiency. Higher compression ratio of the engine decreases the ignition delay period, combustion period, and cooling loss.

  • In this study, through portion of the blind control which the user can adjust the deration and the main loads, night for energy reduction during the review of the energy difference between the cooling and heating load periods in order to present the best operation schedules of the blind control. The result, Cooling period, the venetian blind is installed the day or the day and night CASE adjusted to $0^{\circ}$ was identified as optimal for the operating schedule. Heating period, the day, without installed the blinds, the Venetian blind is installed only at night CASE adjusted to $0^{\circ}$ or $45^{\circ}$ angle of the slats, which have been identified as optimal for the operating schedule.

  • The analysis used in this work was cost-benefit analysis method. All future costs and returns of a given mushroom house were discounted to the time of initial investment (present) by means of 3.5% discount rate. Then the cost of ownership was compared to the return from the system. This analysis method has been developed and coded into a balance sheet for use on a EXCEL program. Using this programmed analysis,a large number of the case studies were examined using different combinations of economic conditions. These results will be very useful to individuals considering investment in a mushroom house, or any similar production system. By the way of the sensitivity analysis for each important parameter, the change of the marginal cost-benefit period could be finally determined. These parameters were typically construction cost of mushroom house, cost of cooling system, required cooling and heating energy amounts, unit price of mushroom media bottle, growing number of media bottles, production weight per unit bottle, sale price of mushroom, and annual number of growing period, etc.

  • A study on waste heat utilization of melted slags at pyorlysis, gasification and melting system was performed. Researchers studied heat balance of substances that flow and flow out to the system which is consisted of melting furnace, combustion chamber, and waste heat boiler, then they calculated melting slags' quantity of heat by the first law of thermodynamics. If they use water cursh pit outflow which is gotten by quenching of melting slag as a energy for heating and cooling system, steam of waste heat boiler would be delivered to a steam turbine, making energy, then they will get 67,671,000 won of profit a year. It will take 3 years to repossess the cost that they invested for building it. And, if we predict durability of trash burner is 20 years, we will get approximately 1,150,407,000 won of profits in 17 years without the period when we repossess the building costs.

  • The main thrust of this paper is to investigate acceptable supply air conditions of a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) for highrise apartment buildings. As for a typical $132-m^2$ apartment unit, it was assumed that centralized DOAS-Ceiling Radiant Cooling Panel was installed. Transient behavior and control characteristics of each system were modeled numerically using a commercial equation solver program. The optimized dew point temperature of the DOAS was discussed on the basis of the ASHRAE standard 62.1-2007 and the current Korean ventilation standard for apartments. It was found that the optimized dew point temperature of the DOAS supply air accommodating total latent load of a space is $11-12^{\circ}C$ and the appropriate supply air temperature of the DOAS is $11-12^{\circ}C$ in cooling period and neutral temperature of $18-20^{\circ}C$ in intermediate period.

Phytoplankton Community in Adjacent Waters of Ulchin Nuclear Power Plant

  • To understand the phytoplankton community in adjacent waters of Ulchin nuclear power plant (UNPP), abundance and the size fractionated $chl-\alpha$ concentrations were evaluated through seasonal interval sampling from April 2003 to February 2004. A total of 211 different phytoplankton species was observed and mean abundance of phytoplankton in each study period ranged from 244,286 to 1,221,779 cells $L^{-1}$. The contributions of microplankton $(>20\mu{m})$ to total phytoplankton abundance ranged from 42.5 to 83.6% (average 66.1%) and those of nanoplankton $(>20\mu{m})$ ranged from 16.4 to 57.5% (average 33.9%). Total chl-$\alpha$ concentrations of phytoplankton ranged from 0.52 to $2.26\mu{g}\;L^{-1}$. The contribution of chl-$\alpha$ concentrations of microplankton was higher than that of nano- and picoplankton through the study period with exception of July 2008. The results of abundances and $chl-\alpha$ concentrations suggest that microplankton has an important role in adjacent waters of UNPP. The diminution of abundances and $chl-\alpha$ concentrations of phytoplankton was observed after passage through the cooling water system, but it was gradually recovered by mixing with the ambient waters. Our results suggested that the influence of thermal discharges on phytoplankton should be restricted within narrow limits around outlet area of thermal effluents.
