  • Plastic products are producted more than 70% of total processes by the injection molding. The injection molding process has 4 processes such as filling, packing, cooling and ejecting. It spends most of times in the cooling process. Therefore, it is important to control the mold temperature in producing plastic products. The time and system of cooling affect the product's quality and productivity. Especially, cooling time has about 60% of total injection cycle time. Therefore, we can improve a productivity by shortening cooling time. This study shows comparative study about cooling efficiency of spiral channel and baffle and observed the variation of time to freeze of molding As the result of CAE experiments, cooling rate by spiral channel had faster than baffle and as freeze time was decreased. Results of this study will be used widely to design for cooling system of injection mold.

  • A small air conditioner using thermoelectric module has been designed and built. Three types of cooling methods, such as air cooling, closed-loop water cooling, and evaporative cooling, for hot side of thermoelectric module have been investigated. Among three types of cooling method, the evaporative cooling method is seen to be the most effective to achieve the steady state operation of a thermoelectric air conditioner The system performance with evaporative cooling method are also studied in detail for several oprating parameters, such as input power to the thermoelectric module, water or air flow rate at the hot side, and air flow rate at the cold side. The results obtained indicate that the cooling capacity of a system is increased with an increase in the input power to the thermoelectric module while the system COP is decreased. It is also found that the optimal air flow rate as well as water flow rate at the hot side is needed for the best system performance at a liven operating condition. Both the system COP and cooling capacity are increased as the air flow rate at cold side is increased.

  • The battery cells in lithium-ion battery pack assembled with high-capacity and high-power pouch cells, are commonly cooled with thin aluminum cooling plates in contact with the cells. For HEV/EV lithium-ion battery systems assembled with high-capacity, high-power pouch cells, the cells are commonly cooled with thin aluminum cooling plates in contact with the cells. Thin aluminum cooling plates are cooled by cold plate with coolant flow paths. In this study, the effect of the battery cooling system design including aluminum cooling plate thickness and various position of cold plate on the cooling performance are investigated by using finite element methods (FEM). Optimal cooling plate and cold plate design are proposed for improving the uniformity in temperature distributions as well as lowering average temperature for the cells with large capacities based on the simulation results.

  • Most of the thirteen substations in operation in the metropolitan area were installed around the year 2000, and since water cooling methods are used to directly withdraw heat from transformer oils, a stable supply of electric power is required through optimal maintenance of facilities. The water cooling tower installed outdoors, which uses the water supply as sprinkler water, experiences the most problems. Since more than 90% of the cooling water is reused, the dissolved composition in the water becomes concentrated due to long operating hours, and impurities dissolve in the water due to air flowing in from the outside, forming hard scales on the outer surface of the cooling tube, and in extreme cases, reacting with the tube material composition, leading to corrosion. As a result, not only is cooling efficiency lowered, but in extreme cases the cooling tube must be replaced. In this study, the characteristics and composition of the scales formed on the cooling tube were analyzed and corrosion characteristics of material types were identified in order to find an efficient maintenance method for cooling tubes. In addition, the degree of dissolution of various chemicals were investigated during the removal of scales that have been formed.

  • This study is aiming to suggest the effective thermal management system design technologies for the high voltage and capacity battery system of the electricity driven vehicles and introduce the theoretical designing methods. In order to investigate the effective operation of the battery system for the electricity driven vehicles, the heat generation model for Li-ion battery system using the chemical reaction while charging and discharging was suggested and the thermal loads of the heat sources (air or liquid) for cooling and heating were calculated using energy balance. Especially, the design methods for the cooling and heating of the battery system for maintaining the optimum operation temperature were investigated under heating, cooling and generated heat (during charging and discharging) conditions. The battery thermal management system for the effective battery operation of the electricity driven vehicles was suggested reasonably depending on the variation of the season and operation conditions. In addition, at the same conditions under summer season, the cooling method using the liquid and active cooling technique showed a relatively high capacity, while cooling method using the passive cooling technique showed a relatively low capacity.

  • In recent years there have been considerable attentions on nanoimprint lithography (NIL) by the display device and semiconductor industry due to its potential abilities that enable cost-effective and high-throughput nanofabrication. A major disadvantage of thermal NIL is the thermal cycle, that is, heating over glass transition temperature and then cooling below it, which requires a significant amount of processing time and limits the throughput. One of the methods to overcome this disadvantage is to improve the cooling performance in NIL process. In this paper, a numerical analysis model of cooling system in thermal NIL was development by CAD/CAE program and the performance of the cooling system was analyzed by the model. The calculated temperatures of nanoimprint device were verified by the measurements. By using the analysis model, the case that the cooling material is replaced by liquid nitrogen is investigated.

  • As the space of the wind power generator stator end is limited, it is difficult for us to place the inner evaporative cooling system in it. We use the non-overlapping concentrated windings scheme to solve the placing and cooling problem. The characteristic of a 5MW direct-driven permanent magnet generator with non-overlapping concentrated windings were analyzed under no-load, rating-load and short-circuit by (Finite Element Method) FEM for verification of design. We studied the connection methods of the stator windings and designed the end connection member. The heat dissipation of the stator end was simulated by FEM, the result showed that the end cooling could satisfy the wind generator operation needs. These results show that the direct-driven permanent magnet wind power generators with non-overlapping concentrated windings and inner evaporative cooling system can solve the cooling problem of wind power generator, and obtain good performance at the same time.

  • Pipe cooling has been popularly used in the mass concreting work to reduce temperature of the structure since it is known to be the easiest way to apply and has been the customary usage. But wrong application of the system results in the harmful effect on the structure by crack formation due to thermal shocks and improper cooling schemes. Thus, this study aims at the suppling of effective cooling methods through parametric study. For this, circulating method, velocity of water supply and circulating duration were selected as critical factors affecting the effectiveness of cooling system. As a results of thermal analysis, it was found that too much thermal gradient in the vicinity of the pipe creates localized radial or circumferential cracks. The duration of circulating cooling may be recommended to be as short as several days which may safely reduce the concrete temperature to below a final stable value. It was also found that pipe cooling is more effective to decrease the degree external restraints than internal one.

  • As a type of bolt with a spherical head, the ball stud is widely used as a part of a ball joint in steering or suspension systems in automobiles. Balls and studs are subjected to heat treatment suitable for each material; in particular, the shear strength of the ball stud must meet the specifications of the production company. This study evaluated the shear strength of joints according to the cooling method of ball studs subject to resistance welding. The shear stress of water cooling was higher than that of air cooling (as-received material). Note, however, th at oil cooling showed lower stress than that of as-received. When judged by standard deviation, mean, and coefficient of variation according to the arithmetic statistics and shape parameter as well as scale parameter, oil cooling is suitable.

  • Lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) is used as coolant for MicroURANUS, a small marine nuclear power plant, and this coolant is transported in the plant by an electromagnetic pump. Given the considerable heat generated by the electromagnetic pump, the cooling of the pump is essential. This study compared air cooling and water-cooling methods and found that the maximum temperatures during air and water cooling were 640 K and 372 K, respectively. These findings were utilized to design an electromagnetic pump with water-cooling. The maximum temperature of the pump was lower than the boiling point of water; thus, the pump did not require a separate pressurization. Consequently, the resistance problem of the coil and the deformation problem of the material caused by generated heat can be solved through water-cooling.
