  • This study presents a coolant density calculation device and its corresponding method by using a mass flowmeter and the LabVIEW program. The method can be easily measured with a mixture of coolant and by calculating the percentage of ethylene-glycol without additional investment. The cooling water is very important in a vehicle to protect the engine, and the cooling performance is affected by the mixture concentration and coolant density. The coolant density calculation device measures the mixed concentration in the anti-freeze cooling mixture made from distilled water and ethylene-glycol in real time with the mass flowmeter that is commonly attached to the radiator or heater core. The calculation program for the mixture concentration percentage was developed using the LabVIEW software. The correlation between experimental results and the calculation was conducted for a range of temperature from 40 to $90^{\circ}C$ and by varying the mixture ratio of distilled water and ethylene-glycol. As a result, the anti-freeze coolant concentration in the volume percentage is able to monitor the coolant density in a timely basis by implementing a mixture concentration calculation program without the need for additional equipment investment. The results of the calculation for the mixture concentration level show a maximum 2.7% deviation compared to the experimental results.

  • A coolant operating condition in al fuel cell stack was an important factor to determine the temperature distribution which affected the fuel cell performance and relative humidity. In this study, the fuel cell performance was evaluated as a function of the coolant flow rate with the range of $0.1{\sim}0.8$ liter/min cell and the coolant inlet temperature of $20{\sim}82^{\circ}C$. The cell temperature increased with increasing the coolant inlet temperature and with decreasing the coolant flow rate. The coolant inlet temperature and flow rate to maintain the better performance of the fuel cell were in the range of $45{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ and $0.2{\sim}0.4$ liter/min cell, respectively. The experimental results showed that the optimal heat removal rate from the stack by coolant was $0.4{\sim}0.6W/cm^2$ cell.

  • This paper presents results of experimental studies on the heat transfer and solidification of the molten metal pool with overlying coolant with boiling. The metal pool is heated from the bottom surface and coolant is injected onto the molten metal pool. As a result, the crust, which is a solidified layer, may form at the top of the molten metal pool. Heat transfer is accomplished by a conjugate mechanism, which consists of the natural convection of the molten metal pool, the conduction in the crust layer and the convective boiling heat transfer in the coolant. This work examines the crust formation and the heat transfer rate on the molten metal pool with boiling coolant. The simulant molten pool material is tin (Sn) with the melting temperature of 232$^{\circ}C$. Demineralized water is used as the working coolant. The crust layer thickness was ostensibly varied by the heated bottom surface temperature of the test section, but not much affected by the coolant injection rate. The correlation beかeon the Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number in the molten metal Pool region of this study is compared against the crust formation experiment without coolant boiling and the literature correlations. The present experimental results are higher than those from the experiment without coolant boiling, but show general agreement with the Eckert correlation, with some deviations in the high and low ends of the Rayleigh number. This discrepancy is currently attributed to concurrent rapid boiling of the coolant on top of the metal layer.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the speed of grinding and coolants on mercury vaporization during amalgam removal. Forty amalgam filled stone dies were stored at $37^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity for 7 days prior to the beginning of the mercury vapor experiment and were divided into 4 different groups; In Group I; Used by high speed without coolant & evacuator during amalgam removal. In Group II; Used by high speed with coolant & evacuator during amalgam removal. In Group III; Used by low speed without coolant & evacuator during amalgam removal. In Group IV; Used by low speed with coolant & evacuator during amalgam removal. The amalgam specimens were removed in a 30-second time period and mercury vapor was collected with membrane filter at 27mm from the site of removal and 45 degree above there. Samples in Group II, IV were removed with coolant spray at a flow rate of 30 ml/min with high-velocity evacuator. Mercury vapor collected membrane filter was analysed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer using cold vapor method. The results were as follows; 1. The mercury vapor levels were obtained all of the Groups. 2. The mercury vapor levels of the Group II, IV (with coolant & evacuator) were less than that of the Group I, III (without coolant & evacuator). 3. The highest mercury vapor level recorded during amalgam removal procedure was Group I (used by high speed without coolant & evacuator) and its record was $0.78{\pm}0.09\;mg/m^3$, which exceed the T.L.V. by 15 times. 4. The mercury vapor level of the Group IV (used by low speed with coolant & evacuator) was more than that of the Group II (used by high speed with coolant & evacuator), but its difference was not significant, statistically. • A visualization test of the fuel-coolant interaction in the Test for Real cOrium Interaction with water (TROI) test facility was carried out. To experimentally simulate the In-Vessel corium Retention (IVR)- External Reactor Vessel Cooling (ERVC) conditions, prototypic corium was released directly into the coolant water without a free fall in a gas phase before making contact with the coolant. Corium (34.39 kg) consisting of uranium oxide and zirconium oxide with a weight ratio of 8:2 was superheated, and 22.54 kg of the 34.39 kg corium was passed through water contained in a transparent interaction vessel. An image of the corium jet behavior in the coolant was taken by a high-speed camera every millisecond. Thermocouple junctions installed in the vertical direction of the coolant were cut sequentially by the falling corium jet. It was clearly observed that the visualization image of the corium jet taken during the fuel-coolant interaction corresponded with the temperature variations in the direction of the falling melt. The corium penetrated through the coolant, and the jet leading edge velocity was 2.0 m/s. Debris smaller than 1 mm was 15% of the total weight of the debris collected after a fuel-coolant interaction test, and the mass median diameter was 2.9 mm.

  • The object of this paper is to find out a coolant level, which is economic and similar to the conventional level, high level, in cutting temperature. For this, new coolant level, called a low level, was proposed, which is about 1/4 of conventional level. And the cutting temperature of each coolant level in turning was analyzed using statistical method. Firstly, it was analyzed that the temperature mean of each coolant level is not equal by ANOVA-test. Secondly by Tukey's HSD, one of multiple comparisons, it was analyzed that the temperature mean of low level is similar to that of high level and different from that of none level.

  • This study indicated the possibility of energy regeneration from waste coolant heat, by using thermoelectric generation integrated with heat pipe. The internal combustion engine rejects more than 60% wasteful energy to the atmosphere by heat. The thermoelectric generator has recently been studied, to convert the energy from engine waste heat into electricity. For coolant waste heat recovery, a thermoelectric generator was investigated, to find out the possibility of vehicular application. Performance characteristics were conducted with various test conditions of coolant temperature, coolant mass flow rate, air temperature, and air velocity, with the thermoelectric generator installed either horizontally or vertically. Experimental results show that the electric power and conversion efficiency increases according to the temperature difference between the hot and cold side of the thermoelectric generator, and the coolant flow rate of the hot side heat exchanger. Performance improvement can be expected by optimizing the heat pipe design.

  • Specially designed grooved journal bearings are installed in the main coolant pump for SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) to support radial load on the rotating shaft. The canned motor type main coolant pumps are arranged vertically on the reactor vessel and filled with circulating primary coolant which is pure water. The main coolant pump bearings are lubricated with this coolant without any other external lubricant supply. Because lubricating condition is too severe for this bearing to generate proper hydrodynamic film, investigation of lubrication characteristics of the journal bearing is important to satisfy life constraint of whole pump system, and the results will be applied to the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the shaft system. The bearing is made of silicon graphite which has self$.$lubricating effect. A lubrication analysis method is proposed for this vertically grooved journal bearing in the main coolant pump of SMART, and lubricational characteristics of the bearings are examined in this paper.

  • Vapor explosions can be classified in terms of modes of contact between the hot molten fuel and the coolant, since different contact modes may affect fuel-coolant mixing and subsequent vapor explosion energetics. It is generally accepted that most vapor explosion phenomena fall into three different modes of contact; fuel pouring into coolant, coolant injection into fuel and stratified fuel-coolant layers. In this study, we review previous stratified steam explosion experiments as well as recent experiments performed at the KTH in Sweden. While experiments with prototypic reactor materials are minimal, we do note that generally the energetics is limited for the stratified mode of contact. When the fuel mass involved in a steam explosion in a stratified geometry is compared to a pool geometry based on geometrical aspects, one can conclude that there is a very limited set of conditions (when melt jet diameter is small) under which a steam explosion is more energetic in a stratified geometry. However, under these limited conditions the absolute energetic explosion output would still be small because the total fuel mass involved would be limited.
