Three-port dual-active bridge (DAB) converter in a DC microgrid was studied due to its high power density and cost-effectiveness. The other advantages of DAB include galvanic isolation and bidirectional power conversion capability using simple control modulation. The three-port DAB converter consists of a three winding transformer and three bridges. The transformer has three phases, which means that the ports are coupled. Thus, the three-port DAB converter causes unwanted power flows when the load connected to each port changes. The basic operational principles of the three-port DAB converter are presented in this study. The decoupling control strategy of the independent port power transfer is presented with a mathematical power model to overcome the unexpected power flow problem. The validity of the proposed analysis and control strategy is verified with PSIM simulation and experiments using a 1-kW prototype power converter.
This paper deals with a new wave shaping technique for cost effective harmonic mitigation in ac-dc converter feeding Vector Controlled Induction Motor Drives(VCIMD's) for improving power quality at the point of common coupling(PCC). The proposed harmonic mitigator consists of a polygon connected autotransformer based twelve-pulse ac-dc converter and a small rating passive shunt filter tuned for $11^{th}$ harmonic frequency. This ac-dc converter eliminates the most dominant $5^{th},\;7^{th},\;and\;11^{th}$ harmonics and imposes the reduction of other higher order harmonics from the ac main current, thereby improving the power quality at ac mains. The design of autotransformer is carried out for the proposed ac-dc converter to make it suitable for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse ac-dc converter is used. The effect of load variation on VCIMD is also studied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ac-dc converter in a wide operating range of the drive. Experimental results obtained on the developed laboratory prototype of the proposed harmonic mitigator are used to validate the model and design of the ac-dc converter.
In design of a digital current controller for a 3$\phi$ voltage-source (VS) PWM converter, its conventional model, i.e., stationary or synchronous reference frame model, is used in obtaining its discretized version. It introduces, however, inherent errors since the following practical problems are not taken into consideration: the characteristics of the space vector-based pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) and the time delays in the process of sampling and computation. In this paper, the new hybrid reference frame model of the 3$\phi$ VS PWM converter is proposed considering these problems. In addition, the direct digital current controller based on this model is designed without any prediction or extrapolation algorithm to compensate the time delay. So the control algorithm is made very simple. The validity of the proposed algorithm is proved by the computer simulation results.
Normally, the artificial intelligence algorithms are widely applied to the optimal controller design. Then, it is expected that the best output performance is achieved. Unfortunately, when resulting controller parameters are implemented by using the practical devices, the output performance cannot be the best as expected. Therefore, the paper presents the optimal controller design using the combination between the state-space averaging model and the adaptive Tabu search algorithm with the new criteria as two penalty conditions to handle the mentioned problem. The buck-boost converter regulated by the cascade PI controllers is used as the example power system. The results show that the output performance is better than those from the conventional design method for both input and load variations. Moreover, it is confirmed that the reported controllers can be implemented using the realistic devices without the limitation and the stable operation is also guaranteed. The results are also validated by the simulation using the topology model of MATLAB and also experimentally verified by the testing rig.
Increasingly stringent emission regulations of EU and CARB (California Air resource Board) require mandatory OBD (On Board Diagnostics) far the catalytic converters of a vehicle. It demands that MIL(Malfunction Indication Light) should be tuned on to inform the driver of catalytic converter failures. Currently dual oxygen sensor method Is widely used for the converter OBD. However, since it works only alter converter light-off, it has a serious limitation when applied to TLEV or more stringent emission regulations where more than 85% of total emission is coming out before converter light-off. In addition, a recent development in catalyst material. coating technology and additive catalysts leads to a much improved OSC (Oxygen Storage Capacity) after converter light-off, current methods are very difficult to determine levels of converter aging. Therefore, it is desired to develop an OSC detecting method before converter light-off to diagnose converter failures with higher reliability. In this study, OSCs of converters are measured by an absolute measuring method and a dynamic measuring method, and some of fundamental ideas are suggested about converter OBD before converter light-off. The converters are aged with two different aging methods; those are a furnace aging and an engine bench aging: to represent aging conditions in actual field applications. Dual oxygen sensor method at the lower temperature than light-off is also studied at a model gas bench with the converters. It is fecund that there is a certain point in temperature lower than light-off where difference due to aging level becomes maximum, thus a proper dynamic method to effectively monitor catalytic converters could be implemented fur the range lower than light-off temperatures. With this result, the aging level of converters is examined at an engine bench.
Due to high power ratings and low conduction loss, the IGBT has become more attractive in switching power supplies. However, its turn-on and turn-off characteristics cause severe switching loss and switching frequency limitation. This paper proposes 2.4kW, 48V, high efficiency half-bridge DC-DC converter using paralleled IGBT-MOSFET switch concept, where each of IGBT and MOSFET plays its part during on-periods and switching instants. The switching loss is analyzed by using the linearized model and the opteration of the converter are investigated by simulation results.
A small-signal low-frequency disturbance of the input line affects the regulated-output voltage of the series resonant converter. To mitigate the detrimental effect, the output feedback PI-controller is employed. Small-signal linear models are represented to characterize the closed loop series resonant converter system. Design equations for the PI-controller which satisfy stability and percent ripple conditions are derived from the closed-loop linear model. Experimental results are presented which show excellent correlation with theory.
In this paper, we propose a new diagnosis method of DC/DC converter aging. The method is based on the variations of parasitic resistor for the aging process. We apply an on-line diagnosis of DC/DC converter because the observation is not a device, but a system. This study proposes a method of DC/DC converter diagnosis by analyzing the variations of model on the variations of parasitic resistor.
