  • A single stage AC/DC converter based on a full bridge topology suitable for high frequency soft switching converter applications is proposed. The proposed converter has high power factor, zero voltage switching, low noise and high efficiency. A pulse width modulation control is employed to reduce the switching and rectification losses respectively. This proposal converter has simple structure and low cost, The modelling and detailed analysis are performed to derive the design equations, a prototype converter has been designed and experimented. The new converter is attractive for high-voltage, high-power applications where IGBT's are predominantly used as the power switches. The principle of operation, features, and design are verified on a 1.5kW, 30kHz, IGBT based experimental circuit.

  • This paper proposes the design of micro energy harvesting system by using thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU), which harvests electric energy from the kinetic energy of pedestrian and drives the desired load, and applied it to the self-generating shoes. Also, we designed the buck-boost converter in discontinuous conduction mode(DCM) which functions as a resistor emulator(RE) such that converter's average input current is proportional to input voltage, and it results in transfer of maximum power to buck-boost converter according to control behavior that converter's input resistance is matched with TPU's internal resistance. Therefore, this paper confirms the validity of proposed control scheme and possibility of application for self-generating shoes, from the obtained characteristic of designed micro energy harvesting system by using a TPU and buck-boost converter in DCM.

  • The high-switching-frequency operation of power converters can achieve high power density through size reduction of passive components, such as capacitors, inductors, and transformers. However, a small-output capacitor that has small capacitance and low effective series resistance changes the small-signal model of the converter power stage. Such a capacitor can make the converter unstable by increasing the crossover frequency in the transfer function of the small-signal model. In this paper, the design and implementation of a high-frequency LLC resonant converter are presented to verify the power density enhancement achieved by decreasing the size of passive components. The effect of small output capacitance is analyzed for stability by using a proper small-signal model of the LLC resonant converter. Finally, proper design methods of a feedback compensator are proposed to obtain a sufficient phase margin in the Bode plot of the loop gain of the converter for stable operation at 500 kHz switching frequency. A theoretical approach using MATLAB, a simulation approach using PSIM, and experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed analysis and design methods with 100 and 500 kHz prototype converters.

  • This study proposes a small-signal model and control design for a two-stage DC-DC-AC converter to investigate its dynamic characteristics in relation to battery energy storage system. When the circuit analysis of the two-stage DC-DC-AC converter is attempted simultaneously, the mathematical procedure of deriving the dynamic equation is complex and difficult. The main idea of modeling the two-stage DC-DC-AC converter states that this topology is separated into a bidirectional DC-DC converter and a single-phase inverter with an equivalent current source corresponding to that of the inverter or converter. The dynamic equations for the separated converter and inverter are then derived using the state-space averaging technique. The procedures of building the small-signal model of the two-stage DC-DC-AC converter are described in detail. Based on the derived small-signal model, the individual controllers are designed through a frequency-domain analysis. The simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed modeling approach and controller design.

  • It is necessary to accurately predict converter losses for optimized design of a high-power DC-DC converter. The losses of switching devices and inductor among the elements of the converter take significantly greater proportion. The current ripple will be determined by the size of the inductance and this inductance value varies depending on the DC amount of inductor current. As the inductance changes according to load current, the change influences not only the inductor loss itself but also the total converter loss. In this paper, for more accurate design of a bi-directional DC-DC converter for 30kW-class energy storage system, more accurate computational model is proposed considering inductance variation according to the load current change. The inductance changes using variable magnetic cores are verified and converter efficiency is tested through simulations and experiments.

  • This study proposes a design methodology for bidirectional, series-resonant, dual-active bridge (SRDAB) converters. The circuit parameters of the SRDAB converters are designed by considering the output power and efficiency of the converter. The proposed method can be used to design a high-power, high-efficiency SRDAB converter. A voltage controller is employed to manipulate the output voltage of the converter, and the controller gains are selected using the transfer function and frequency response of the controller. Simulation results show that the output power of the designed SRDAB converter is 2 kW per converter module as designed. In addition, the performance of the voltage controller is evaluated using the simulation and experimental results. The output voltage follows the reference voltage within 10 ms under the step change of the reference command. The output voltage also follows the reference voltage under the step load change. The efficiency of the designed SRDAB converter is 95.6%.
