  • The brittle nature in most FRP composites is accompanying other forms of energy absorption mechanisms such as fibre-matrix interface debonding and ply delamination. It could play an important role on the energy absorption capability of composite structures. To solve the brittle nature, the adhesion between pines and composites was studied. Thermal treated pines were attached on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) by epoxy adhesives. To find the optimum condition of thermal treatment for pine, two different thermal treatments at 160 and $200^{\circ}C$ were compared to the neat case. To evaluate mechanical and interfacial properties of pines and pine/CFRP composites, tensile, lap shear and Izod test were carried out. The bonding force of pine grains was measured by tensile test at transverse direction and the elastic wave from fracture of pines was analyzed. The mechanical, interfacial properties and bonding force at $160^{\circ}C$ treated pine were highest due to the reinforced effect of pine. However, excessive thermal treatment resulted in the degradation of hemicellulose and leads to the deterioration in mechanical and interfacial properties.

  • Commonly-used polymers are manufactured as versatile forms. Furthermore, continuous polymer fibers are recently manufactured using nylon or aramid fiber. One of common epoxy was also used to make polymer fibers. Bisphenol-A type was used as base epoxy whereas amine and anhydride were used as hardeners. Epoxy fibers was cured by stepping up the temperature to maintain the shape of epoxy fiber. Surface energy was measured to confirm the degree of interfacial adhesion by modified static contact angle method. After mechanical properties were measured via fiber tensile test, the evaluation of fiber fracture was proceeded. Tensile strength of epoxy fiber using amine type hardener was higher as 138 MPa than anhydride case as 70 MPa. Fractured surface exhibited different failure patterns at the cross-section.

  • The optical characteristics of high-power direct-lit white light-emitting diode (LED) lighting were investigated, where a quantum dot (QD) film was adopted to enhance the color-rendering index (CRI). The transmittance of the diffuser plate and the concentration of the QD film were varied in this study. The color coordinates and the correlated color temperature (CCT) did not show any appreciable change, while the CRI values increased slightly as the transmittance of the diffuser plate decreased. The investigated optical properties were nearly independent of the viewing angle, and the luminance distribution was close to Lambertian. The CCT decreased from approximately 6000 K to approximately 4000 K as the concentration of the QD film increased from 0 to 7.5 wt%, which was due to the enhanced red component in the emission spectrum. The CRI increased to approximately 95 for some optical configurations of the lighting. These results demonstrate that glare-free, color-changeable, high-rendering LED lighting can be realized by using a combination of a diffuser plate of appropriate transmittance and a red QD film.

  • The purpose of this study was to development of the 'convergence motive' scale for interdisciplinary knowledge fusion. Based on results from literature review, this study clarifies a theoretical ground for 'convergence motive'. Initial items to measure this concept were verified by content analysis and then finalized. After a pilot test done with 568 college students, gathered data were analyzed by item selection and exploratory factor analysis to verify their validity. Next, the main test implemented with 1,211 college students was analyzed with exploratory factor analysis using the method for rotation based on maximum likelihood analysis and direct oblimin for validating the final items to measure 'convergence motive'. As a result, the scale for 'convergence motive' consists of 43 items to measure the following four factors: collaboration to identifying and solving problems, challenge of a new perspective, communication for convergence, cohesion for convergence. Construct validity and criterion-related validity were performed at last to check this scale's theoretical construct. In conclusion, this study concluded that the scales for convergence motive could be generalized and applicable to other samples.

  • There is a growing interest in convergence. National R & D is also providing various policies and institutional support to promote convergence research. Convergence research, however, does not clearly specify its characteristics at the academic and government levels. This research proceeds with the process of collecting, refining, analyzing, modeling, verifying and visualizing national R & D data through the National Science and Technology Information Service (NTIS). The method is to derive the convergence research characteristics and to derive through text mining, focusing on the unstructured information of national R & D project data. The study confirmed that there was a difference in perception between the definition of converged research and the research site. In order to improve this, the research suggested that convergence among research subjects, collaboration among research topics reflecting various backgrounds and characteristics of researchers, and analysis of characteristics of convergence research using information were suggested in the process of establishing convergence policy.

  • In this work, we generalize a family of optimal eighth order weighted-Newton methods to Banach spaces and study its local convergence to approximate a locally-unique solution of a system of nonlinear equations. The convergence in this study is shown under hypotheses only on the first derivative. Our analysis avoids the usual Taylor expansions requiring higher order derivatives but uses generalized Lipschitz-type conditions only on the first derivative. Moreover, our new approach provides computable radius of convergence as well as error bounds on the distances involved and estimates on the uniqueness of the solution based on some functions appearing in these generalized conditions. Such estimates are not provided in the approaches using Taylor expansions of higher order derivatives which may not exist or may be very expensive or impossible to compute. The convergence order is computed using computational order of convergence or approximate computational order of convergence which do not require usage of higher derivatives. This technique can be applied to any iterative method using Taylor expansions involving high order derivatives. The study of the local convergence based on Lipschitz constants is important because it provides the degree of difficulty for choosing initial points. In this sense the applicability of the method is expanded. Finally, numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical results and to show the convergence behavior.

  • We have investigated the channel protection layer (PL) effect on the performance of an oxide thin film transistor (TFT) with a staggered top gate ZnO TFT and Al-doped zinc tin oxide (AZTO) TFT. Deposition of an ultra-thin PL on oxide semiconductor films enables TFTs to behave well by protecting the channel from a photo-resist (PR) stripper which removes the depleted surface of the active layer and increases the carrier amount in the channel. In addition, adopting a PL prevents channel contamination from the organic PR and results in high mobility and small subthreshold swings. The PL process plays a critical role in the performance of oxide TFTs. When a plasma process is introduced on the surface of an active layer during the PL process, and as the plasma power is increased, the TFT characteristics degrade, resulting in lower mobility and higher threshold voltage. Therefore, it is very important to form an interface using a minimized plasma process.

  • In recent innovation trends, one notable feature is the merging and overlapping of technologies: in other words, technological convergence. A key technological convergence is the fusion of biotechnology (BT) and information technology (IT). Major IT advances have led to innovative devices that allow us to advance BT. However, the lack of data on IT-BT convergence is a major impediment: relatively little research has analyzed the inter-disciplinary relationship of different industries. We propose a systematic approach to analyzing the technological convergence of BT and IT. Patent analysis, including citation and co-classification analyses, was adopted as a main method to measure the convergence intensity and coverage, and two portfolio matrices were developed to manage the technological convergence. The contribution of this paper is that it provides practical evidences for IT-BT convergence, based on quantitative data and systematic processes. This has managerial implications for each sector of IT and BT.
