  • The industrial development of large scale deep bed filters has been a very important step in the process of drinking water production and more recently in the tertiary treatment of wastewater. The target of deep bed filtration is the retention is the retention of small particles generally smaller than 30 microns at relatively small concentration, generally less than 30 mg/l from natural water (surface water or aquifers) or secondary treated wastewater. The relation between the retention efficiency and the characteristics of the particles has been extensively studied experimentally and through different models of retention. During the last years the development of new technologies (fiber filter, membrane modules) lead to more intensive processes compared to conventional sand filtration. Fiber filters can combine intensification with a decrease in specific energy needed however they cannot be operated under gravity like sand filters. Membrane filters (UF or MF) are much more intensive and efficient than sand filters. The specific energy needed is not so high (about $0.1Kwh/M^3$) but is higher than sand or fiber filter. A Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) has to be made for a complete comparison between these technologies taking in account that the efficiency of particle retention obtained by membrane filters is unique.

  • We compared the quality of 'Fuji' apples (Malus ${\times}$ domestica) from trees whose leaves were not removed (no artificial defoliation; NAD) with apples from trees that underwent early defoliation (ED, treated in mid September and early October) and conventional defoliation (CD, treated in early and mid October). The experiment was conducted in three consecutive years using 15-year-old 'Fuji' apple grafted on Malus prunifolia. Fruits were harvested on November 7, 16 or 12 in 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively. Compared to NAD treatment, ED and CD treatment reduced the fresh weight by 4.7% and 0.6%, respectively. The soluble solids content of NAD apples ($14.4^{\circ}Brix$) was slightly higher than that of CD ($14.1^{\circ}Brix$) and ED ($14.0^{\circ}Brix$) apples. Soluble sugar content, flesh firmness, water-core index, and titratable acidity were not affected by defoliation treatment regardless of treatment timing. The skin blush index of NAD apples (2.3) was inferior to that of CD (3.3) and ED (3.4)- treated apples. Furthermore, artificial defoliation treatments increased skin redness ($a^*$) and yellowness ($b^*$) and significantly improved the degree of skin blush compared to NAD fruits.

  • The main objectives of this research are to investigate characteristics of ozone solubility due to low solubility of conventional bubbles-ozone generators, evaluate the treatment characteristics of reclaiming textile wastewater for industrial water by means of micro/nano bubbles-dissolved ozone flotation(MNB-DOF) process. The textile wastewater used in this research was obtained from final effluent of the textile wastewater in B city. There is a 400L reactor which consists of a micro-nano bubble system and a ozone generator for experiments. As a result of generating micro-nano bubbles (below $0.5{\mu}m$) by using of MNB-DOF process, it improved ozone solubility due to higher ozone transfer rates. Consequently, the shorter ozonation time clearly indicates the lower power costs. The reported results clearly indicated that MNB-DOF process can be effectively and inexpensively. Results of the experiments through MNB-DOF process in this study satisfy all reclaiming standards as industrial water: pH 6.5~8.5, SS 10 mg/L or below, $BOD_5$) 6 mg/L or below, turbidity 10 NTU or below, Coliforms 1,000/100 mL or below. Therefore there is a possibility of the reclaiming of the textile wastewater as industrial water.

  • Livestock wastewater containing concentrated organic matters and nutrients has been known as one of the major pollutants. It is difficult to apply the conventional activated sludge process to treat livestock wastewater because of high Non-biodegradable (NBD) matter and ammonia. The objectives of this study are to remove NBD matters including aromatic compounds and ammonia in livestock wastewater using Coagulation-Fenton oxidation-Zeolite (CFZ) processes and ascertain applicable feasibility in the field through pilot plant experiment. NBD matters and color remained in the treated water were removed over 92% by Fenton oxidation as the second treatment process. Ammonia was removed by over 99.5% in the zeolite ion exchange process as the last treatment method. From $UV_{254}$, $E_2/E_3$ ratio and GC/MS analyses of treated water at each process, the aromatic compound was converted to aliphatic and aromaticity was decreased. In pilot scale test, organics and ammonia removal efficiencies were not much different from the result of lab-scale test at various operation conditions. Furthermore, reaction time and dosage of Fenton reagent in pilot scale experiment reduced by 40 min and 50% rather than in lab-scale test. $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$, SS, T-N and T-P of treated water in the pilot-scale experiment also met the effluent standards.

  • At high nitrate concentrations, water must be treated to meet regulated concentrations because it results in threat to human health and eutrophication of natural water. However, it is almost impossible to remove nitrate by conventional water treatment methods such as coagulation, filtration and precipitation, due to its high water solubility. Therefore, other technologies including adsorption, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, denitrification, and electrodialysis are required to effectively remove nitrate. Each of these technologies has their own strengths and drawbacks and their feasibility is weighted against factors such as cost, water quality improvement, residuals handling, and pre-treatment requirements. An adsorption technique is the most popular and common process because of its cost effectiveness, ease of operation, and simplicity of design. Surface modifications of adsorbents have been enhanced their adsorption of nitrate. The nitrate-selective membrane process of electrodialysis reversal and reverse osmosis have proven over time and at many locations to be highly effective in removing nitrate contaminating problems in aqueous solutions. Both electrodiaysis and reverse osmosis methods generate highly concentrated wastes and need careful consideration with respect to disposal.

  • Objectives : Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has a cephalosporin and beta-lactam antibiotic-resistant strains. MRSA is one of the major pathogens causing hospital infection and the isolation ratio of MRSA has gradually increased. Consequently, increased resistance to antibiotics is causing serious problems in the world. Therefore, there is a need to develop alternative antimicrobial drugs for the treatment of infectious diseases. Methods : The antibacterial activities of Ipyo-san were evaluated against 2 strains of MRSA and 1 standard Methicillin-susceptible staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) strain by using the disc diffusion method, minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) assay, colorimetric assay using MTT test, checkerboard dilution test and time-kill assay performed under dark. Results : The MIC of Ipyo-san water extract against S. aureus strains ranged from 1000 to $2,000{\mu}g/ml$, so we confirmed that it had a strong antibacterial effect. Also, the combinations of Ipyo-san water extract and conventional antibiotics exhibited improved inhibition of MRSA with synergy effect. We suggest that Ipyo-san water extract against MRSA has antibacterial activity so it has potential as alternatives to antibiotic agents. For the combination test, we used Triton X-100 (TX) and DCCD for measurement of membrane permeability and inhibitor of ATPase. As a result, antimicrobial activity of Ipyo-san water extract was affected by the cell membrane. Conclusions : We suggest that the Ipyo-san water extract lead the treatment of bacterial infection to solve the resistance and remaining side-effect problems that are the major weak points of traditional antibiotics.

  • NIB(methylisoborneol) is an earthy/musty odor compound produced as a second metabolite by cyanobacteria and actinomycetes. MIB is not removed by conventional water treatment(coagulation, sedimentation, filtration) and its presence in tap water, even at low ng/L levels, can result in consumer complaints. PAC(powdered activated carbon) can effectively remove MIB when the correct dose is applied. But, since most operators in water treatment plants apply a PAC dose and then adjust that dose depending on direct observation (odor detection) after treatment, the result is often under-dose or eve,-dose. In this study, kinetic and isotherm tests using $^{14}C$-radiolabeled MIB were performed to determine coefficients for the HSDM(homogeneous surface diffusion model), including liquid film mass transfer coefficient($K_f$) and surface diffusion coefficient ($D_s$). The HSDM gave a reasonable fit and allowed prediction with the experimental data. Base on the HSDM, the authors developed an optimum PAC dose prediction program using the Excel spreadsheet. When the developed program was applied at two water treatment plants, the PAC dose based on the experience of operators in the water treatment plant was significantly different from that recommended by the newly developed program. If operators are willing to use the optimum PAC dose prediction program, it should solve dosing problems.

  • A new type of ultrasonic spray nozzle was fabricated employing a piezoelectric device. The spray nozzle was designed to disperse chemicals in a water treatment mixing tank. The piezoelectric properties in ultrasonic spray nozzles were optimized to improve the dispersion of chemicals. The piezoelectrics were packaged in an aluminum case with silicone resin for the aqueous solution proof packaging. Chemicals were dispersed with high efficiency and the chemicals consumption was reduced by the ultrasonic fine particle spraying. The concentration of Escherichia coli in mixing tank was decreased remarkably using ultrasonic spray nozzle dispersion compared to the conventional methods.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate EPS and SMP variation of sludge and effluent in nitrification and denitrification process with zeolite addition, a possible reduction of effluent DOC by URC(Ultra Rapid Coagulation) process. As a biological wastewater treatment result, EPS formation of both aeration and anoxic sludges are not affect by SRT variation. However, EPS concentration of sludges is higher in aeration tank than in anoxic tank by 6~8 mg EPS/ g VSS. Linear relationship between SMP to DOC indicates that SMP of bulk solution contributes to most of the biological treatment effluent DOC. DOC and turbidity removal efficiency was more improved with URC process than in a conventional coagulation. For pretreatment of UF filtration DOC removal was advanced by URC process than only UF filtration.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the heavy metal removal and biomass productivity in the Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using eggshell and microalgae. The experiment was operated 6 days in the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system, and using eggshell powder and microalgae as Chlorella vulgaris. The obtained result indicated that the biomass productivity of 2.82 g/L/d from 1.12 g/L initial concentration in 6 days was reached with light transmittance of 97% at a 305 mm depth in the optical panel photobioreactor (OPPBR). The total removal efficiency of Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Cd was found to be 98.92%, 99.91%, 98.78%, 88.99% and 98.00% in the AMD using eggshell and Chlorella vulgaris hybrid system, respectively. Additionally, there were significant relationships between biomass and concentration of each heavy metal ($R^2$ = 0.8771, 0.8643, 0.8669, 0.9134 and 0.6277 for Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Cd). These results indicated that the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system was highly effective for heavy metal removal when compared to the conventional biological process in the AMD. Therefore, the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system was effective for heavy metal removal and biomass productivity and can be applied to treat AMD in treatment plant.
