Cleaner Production Option in a Food (KIMCHI) Industry

  • In Kimchi (a salt-pickled and fermented food) manufacturing industry, the process of brining and rinsing the raw vegetable produces a vast amount of wastewater of high salinity. Instead of expensive and low-efficient conventional treatment system, brining wastewater reuse system was developed using hybrid chemical precipitation / microfiltration. In the microfiltration of chemically treated brining wastewater, comparison of flux, backwashing frequency and energy consumption was made between dead-end and crossflow filtration mode. The optimum location of neutralization step in this system was also discussed in connection with the micro filtration performance. The quality test of Kimchi prepared by the reuse system conformed the new approach was successful in terms of water/raw material (salt) savings and wastewater reduction.

  • Hydrogen gas is used as a fuel for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Trace amount of carbon monoxide present in the reformate $H_2$ gas can poison the anode of the PEMFC. Therefore, preferential oxidation (PROX) of CO is essential for reducing the concentration of CO from a hydrogen-rich reformate gas. In this study, conventional Pt/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was prepared for the preferential oxidation of CO. The effects of catalyst preparation method, additive, and hydrogen on the performances of PROX reaction of CO were investigated. Water treatment and addition of Ce enhanced catalytic activity of the Pt/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst at low temperature below $100^{\circ}C$.

Effects of dietary Acremonium terricola culture supplementation on the quality, conventional characteristics, and flavor substances of Hortobagy goose meat

  • This study aimed to determine the effect of dietary supplementation with Acremonium terricola culture (ATC) on the quality, conventional characteristics, and flavor substances of Hortobágy goose meat. A total of 720 one-day-old goslings were divided into four dietary treatments, each consisting of six cages of 30 goslings. The dietary conditions consisted of the control group and three treatment groups supplemented with 3, 5, or 7 g/kg ATC. In male geese, supplementation with 3 g/kg ATC elevated the crude ash (CA) content of the thigh muscle compared to the control group, and the CA content of the pectoralis major was significantly elevated when geese were supplemented with 5 g/kg ATC (p < 0.05). In females, compared with the control group, supplementation with 7 g/kg ATC enhanced the crude protein (CP) content of the pectoralis major. Supplementation with 7 g/kg ATC also increased the crude fat (CF) content of the pectoralis major in females as well as in both sexes; moreover, this supplementation dose increased the inosinic acid content of the thigh muscle in males and in both sexes. In contrast, supplementation with 5 g/kg ATC decreased the pH of the thigh muscle at 12 h postmortem (p < 0.01). No significant changes in meat color, water loss rate, shear force, moisture content or amino acid (AA) levels were observed after ATC supplementation (p > 0.05). Levels of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) in the pectoralis major and levels of SFAs, monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs), and PUFAs in the thigh muscle were not affected by the supplementation. Overall, ATC supplementation had positive effects on the pH, and CA, CP, CF, inosinic acid contents as well as on the FA composition of gosling meat. The optimal level of ATC supplementation was 7 g/kg in goslings from 1 to 70 days of age.

하수고도처리에서 층상이중수화물을 이용한 인산 이온교환 특성 (Characteristics of Ion Exchange of Phosphate using Layered Double Hydroxides in Advanced Wastewater Treatment)

  • The layered double hydroxide with the insertion of chloride ions (LDH-Cl), which was synthesized by the co-precipitation method, was applied to investigate the fundamental aspects of the absorptive agent for phosphate removal from wastewater. The adsorption capacity was best described by the Langmuir-FreundIich isotherm, and the estimated isotherm parameters indicate that the LDH-CI capacity for the phosphate removal is much higher than that observed using a natural adsorbent material such iron oxide tailing. The kinetic experiment also showed that the LDH-Cl adsorption reaction rapidly at the adsorptive rate of 0.55 mg-P/g-LDH/min, implying that this adsorbent can be of use in the full-scale applications. The pH had a minimal effect on the LDH adsorption capacity in the range of 5 to 11, although the capacity dropped at the low pHs because of the change in LDH surface properties. Furthermore, other anions such as $Cl^-$ and $NO_3{^-}$ commonly found in the wastewater streams insignificantly affected the phosphate removal efficiencies, while $HCO_3{^-}$ ions had a negative effect on the LDH adsorption capacity due to its high selectivity. The phosphate removal experiment using the actual secondary effluent from a wastewater treatment plant showed the similar decrease in adsorption capacity, indicating that the bicarbonate ions in the wastewater were competing with phosphate for the adsorptive site in the surface of the LDH-Cl. Overall, the synthetic adsorbent material, LDH-Cl, can be a feasible alternative over other conventional chemical agents, since the LDH-Cl exhibits the high phosphate removal capacity with the low sensitivity to other environmental conditions.

활성슬러지 공정에 의한 Kraft 펄프 폐수의 독성 제거 (Removal of Toxicity from Kraft Pulp Mill Effluents by Activated Sludge Process)

  • 활성슬러지 공정을 이용하여 Kraft 펄프공장에서 배출되는 유출수에 잔류하는 만성독성의 제거가능성을 평가하기 위하여 pilot plant를 운전하였다. 독성 이외에도 폐수내의 BOD, SS, resin과 fatty acids, 색도, 그리고 AOX와 같은 오염물질의 제거효과도 측정되었다. Pilot plant는 정상상태에서 약 10주 동안 운전되었으며 운전기간 동안의 평균 F/M 비율은 0.28, 그리고 sludge age는 8.4일로 계산되었다. 평균 MLSS 농도는 4,309mg/l이었으며 이중 휘발성 물질은 57%이었다. 운전기간 동안, BOD 제거계수(k)는 $30^{\circ}C$에서 8.2/일 이었으며 BOD 제거율은 full-scale 운전시보다 3~6% 정도 낮은 84%로 나타났다. 활성슬러지 유출수의 만성독성 시험은 Dinnel 방법과 BML 방법이 활용되었으며, 시험결과 pilot plant 활성슬러지 시스템에서도 효율적인 운전을 통하여 90% 이상의 독성제거가 가능함을 알 수 있었다. Pilot plant의 진 공정을 통해서 색도와 AOX의 제거는 매우 미미하였으나 resin과 fatty acids는 뛰어난 제거율을 나타내었다.

Quality Assessment of Longissimus and Semitendinosus Muscles from Beef Cattle Subjected to Non-penetrative and Penetrative Percussive Stunning Methods

  • This study provides a comparative analysis of the effects of pre-slaughter penetrative and non-penetrative stunning and post-slaughter stunning on meat quality attributes in longissimus lumborum (LL) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles in heifers. Ten animals were assigned to each of four treatment groups: i) animals were subjected to conventional Halal slaughter (a clean incision through the structures at the front of the upper neck - the trachea, oesophagus, carotid arteries and jugular veins) and post-cut penetrating mechanical stun within 10 to 20 s of the neck cut (Unstunned; US); ii) high power non-penetrating mechanical stunning followed by the neck cut (HPNP); iii) low power non-penetrating mechanical stunning followed by the neck cut (LPNP); and iv) penetrative stunning using a captive bolt pistol followed by the neck cut (P). For each carcass, muscle samples were removed within 45 min of slaughter, portioned and analysed for pH, cooking loss, water holding capacity (WHC), tenderness (WBS), lipid oxidation (TBARS) and color, over a two week storage period. Stunning did not affect pH and cooking loss. Significant differences in water holding capacity, tenderness, lipid oxidation and color were present at different storage time points. HPNP stunning resulted in lower WHC and color values, particularly lightness ($L^*$), higher TBARS values and peak force values compared with those stunned using LPNP, P and US. These adverse effects on quality were mostly encountered in the ST muscle. In conclusion, the meat quality achieved using P, LPNP and US treatments was comparable, and no treatment stood out as considerably better than another.

전기적 염소 발생 촉매활성을 위한 성형된 루테늄 산화물 나노로드와 나노시트 전극의 개발 (Development of templated RuO2 nanorod and nanosheet electrodes to improve the electrocatalytic activities for chlorine evolution)

  • $RuO_2$ is a common active component of Dimensionally Stable Anodes (DSAs) for chlorine evolution that can be used in wastewater treatment systems. The recent improvement of chlorine evolution using nanostructures of $RuO_2$ electrodes to increase the treatment efficiency and reduce the energy consumption of this process has received much attention. In this study, $RuO_2$ nanorod and nanosheet electrodes were simply fabricated using the sol-gel method with organic surfactants as the templates. The obtained $RuO_2$ nanorod and nanosheet electrodes exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic activities for chlorine evolution possibly due to the active surface areas, especially the outer active surface areas, which are attributed to the increase in mass transfers compared with a conventional nanograin electrode. The electrocatalytic activities for chlorine evolution were increased up to 20 % in the case of the nanorod electrode and 35% in the case of the nanosheet electrode compared with the nanograin electrode. The $RuO_2$ nanorod 80 nm in length and 20-30 nm in width and the $RuO_2$ nanosheet 40-60 nm in length and 40 nm in width are formed on the surface of Ti substrates. These results support that the templated $RuO_2$ nanorod and nanosheet electrodes are promising anode materials for chlorine evolution in future applications.

하수종말처리시설 민간투자사업을 위한 계획 인구 및 계획 하수량 추정 (Estimation of Design Population and Design Wastewater Flow Rate for the BTO Project of Wastewater Treatment Facilities)

  • 농어촌지역의 하수종말처리시설 민간투자사업에 대한 계획인구 및 계획하수량 산정 방법을 검토하였다. 기존의 추정 방법에서는 인구 감소 추세임에도 불구하고, 인구가 정체될 것으로 가정하여 계획인구를 추정하고 있으며, 수도보급률이 매우 낮은 지역에서의 계획하수량을 정수장 급수보급량을 이용하여 산정하고 있다. 결과적으로 계획 인구 및 계획하수량의 과다 산정은 필요이상의 하수종말처리시설이 만들어지게 되는 결과를 가져오게 된다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 계획 인구는 통계청의 장래인구 추계결과를 따르는 것으로 하고, 수도가 보급된 지역에서는 급수사용량을, 수도가 보급되지 않은 지역에서는 지하수 사용량을 이용하여 계획하수량을 산정하는 방안을 제시하였다.

The design of an ejector type microbubble generator for aeration tanks

  • The ejector type microbubble generator, which is the method to supply air to water by using cavitation in the nozzle, does not require any air supplier so it is an effective and economical. Also, the distribution of the size of bubbles is diverse. Especially, the size of bubbles is smaller than the bubbles from a conventional air diffuser and bigger than the bubbles from a pressurized dissolution type microbubble generator so it could be applied to the aeration tank for wastewater treatment. However, the performance of the ejector type microbubble generator was affected by hydraulic pressure and MLSS(Mixed Liquor Suspended Solid) concentration so many factors should be considered to apply the generator to aeration tank. Therefore, this study was performed to verify effects of hydraulic pressure and MLSS concentration on oxygen transfer of the ejector type microbubble generator. In the tests, the quantity of sucked air in the nozzle, dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration, oxygen uptake rate(OUR), oxygen transfer coefficient were measured and calculated by using experimental results. In case of the MLSS, the experiments were performed in the condition of MLSS concentration of 0, 2,000, 4,000, 8,000 mg/L. The hydraulic pressure was considered up to $2.0mH_2O$. In the results of experiments, oxygen transfer coefficient was decreased with the increase of MLSS concentration and hydraulic pressure due to the increased viscosity and density of wastewater and decreased air flow rate. Also, by using statistical analysis, when the ejector type microbubble generator was used to supply air to wasterwater, the model equation of DO concentration was suggested to predict DO concentration in wastewater.

MBR 공정 적용을 위한 전처리 오존산화에 의한 형광증백제 제거 연구 (Study on the Removal of Fluorescent Whitening Agent by Pretreatment Ozone Oxidation for MBR Process Application)

  • In this study, ozone oxidation experiment was carried out for the removal of fluorescent whitening agent which is widely used in textile dyeing and paper industry. The stilbene fluorescent whitening agent has been industrialized since the earliest, and the amount of current production is the highest. Due to the characteristics of the fluorescent whitening agent that can not be removed by conventional wastewater treatment methods, the fluorescent whitening agent in wastewater treatment has difficulty in using as recycled water in the process. Pre-treatment ozone oxidation experiment was conducted prior to the introduction of Membrane Bio Reactor(MBR) treatment process by converting biodegradable materials into biodegradable materials. The removal efficiencies of fluorescent whitening agents, a diaminostilbenedisulfonic acid derivative by ozone oxidation were evaluated by $UV_{254}$ Scan, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N and color using a synthetic wastewater sample ($COD_{Mn}=433.0mg/{\ell}$) and paper and paper mill wastewater ($COD_{Mn}=157.2mg/{\ell}$).
