Systemic autoimmune diseases arise from loss of self-tolerance and immune homeostasis between effector and regulator functions. There are many therapeutic modalities for autoimmune diseases ranging from conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and immunosuppressants exerting nonspecific immune suppression to targeted agents including biologic agents and small molecule inhibitors aiming at specific cytokines and intracellular signal pathways. However, such current therapeutic strategies can rarely induce recovery of immune tolerance in autoimmune disease patients. To overcome limitations of conventional treatment modalities, novel approaches using specific cell populations with immune-regulatory properties have been attempted to attenuate autoimmunity. Recently progressed biotechnologies enable sufficient in vitro expansion and proper manipulation of such 'tolerogenic' cell populations to be considered for clinical application. We introduce 3 representative cell types with immunosuppressive features, including mesenchymal stromal cells, Tregs, and myeloid-derived suppressor cells. Their cellular definitions, characteristics, mechanisms of immune regulation, and recent data about preclinical and clinical studies in systemic autoimmune diseases are reviewed here. Challenges and limitations of each cell therapy are also addressed.
In this study, we propose a novel 8T ternary SRAM that can process three logic values (0, 1, and 2) with only two additional transistors, compared with the conventional 6T binary SRAM. The circuit structure consists of positive and negative ternary inverters (PTI and NTI, respectively) with carbon-nanotube field-effect transistors, replacing conventional cross-coupled inverters. In logic '0' or '2,' the proposed SRAM cell operates the same way as conventional binary SRAM. For logic '1,' it works differently as storage nodes on each side retain voltages of VDD/2 and VDD, respectively, using the subthreshold current of two additional transistors. By applying the ternary system, the data capacity increases exponentially as the number of cells increases compared with the 6T binary SRAM, and the proposed design has an 18.87% data density improvement. In addition, the Synopsys HSPICE simulation validates the reduction in static power consumption by 71.4% in the array system. In addition, the static noise margins are above 222 mV, ensuring the stability of the cell operation when VDD is set to 0.9 V.

Three layered neural network was applied for the pattern recognition problem of human spermatozoa in clinical test. The goodness of recognition rate was studied in relation to the number of hidden layer cells and of output layer cells. The proposed method provided better results than conventional template matching technique. Parallel processing of the back propagation learning algorithm was also studied using transputers and its performance was evaluated.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the immunomodulatory effect of Ulva pertusa kjellman extract after undergoing a low temperature and high-pressure extraction process. First, the extracts obtained under the extraction conditions of 150 MPa and $80^{\circ}C$showed a relatively high antioxidant activity, with 90% super oxide radical activity compared to the extracts from conventional extraction process with water at $100^{\circ}C$. This extract also improved the growth of both human immune B and T cells up to $14.5{\times}10^4$ cells/mL and $14.2{\times}10^4$ cells/mL compared to $9.1{\times}10^4$ cells/mL in adding the extracts from conventional processes. It was found that the extracts obtained at 100 MPa and $60^{\circ}C$ showed better activities in NK cell growth and NO production from macrophage as $11.8{\times}10^2$ cells/mL and 30.0 ${\mu}M$. Overall, the extracts from high pressure and low temperature extraction process had relatively higher immune activation activity, possibly because the low temperature and high pressure extraction process may have higher yields of active compounds and have less damage to useful ingredients from relatively weak marine natural resources, such as Ulva pertusa kjellmann than that from the conventional extraction system.
4.0$\times$10-3 (IU/cells/day) of maximum specific scu-PA production, which was higher than those by a 75$\textrm{cm}^2$ T-flask and conventional perfusion systems, was maintained by tube-type bioreactor at 0.35 (1/h) of perfusion rate corresponding to 0.15 (dynes/$\textrm{cm}^2$) of shear stress. The production of scu-PA is also increased as shear stress was slowly increased, which is similar to natural human blood circulation. The tube reactor proves that there may be no limitation of oxygen supply by showing 1.0 (1/h) of oxygen transfer coefficient at steady state and this system yields much lower shear stress of 0.3(dynes/$\textrm{cm}^2$) than that of 5-8(dynes/$\textrm{cm}^2$) by conventional agitation systems.
Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) actively suppress immune cells and have been considered as an impediment to successful cancer immunotherapy. Many approaches have been made to overcome such immunosuppressive factors and to exert effective anti-tumor effects, but the possibility of using medicinal plants for this purpose has been overlooked. Korean red ginseng (KRG) is widely known to possess a variety of pharmacological properties, including immunoboosting and anti-tumor activities. However, little has been done to assess the anti-tumor activity of KRG on MDSCs. Therefore, we examined the effects of KRG on MDSCs in tumor-bearing mice and evaluated immunostimulatory and anti-tumor activities of KRG through MDSC modulation. The data show that intraperitoneal administration of KRG compromises MDSC function and induces T cell proliferation and the secretion of IL-2 and IFN-${\gamma}$, while it does not exhibit direct cytotoxicity on tumor cells and reduced MDSC accumulation. MDSCs isolated from KRG-treated mice also express significantly lower levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase and IL-10 accompanied by a decrease in nitric oxide production compared with control. Taken together, the present study demonstrates that KRG enhances T cell function by inhibiting the immunosuppressive activity of MDSCs and suggests that although KRG alone does not exhibit direct anti-tumor effects, the use of KRG together with conventional chemo- or immunotherapy may provide better outcomes to cancer patients through MDSC modulation.
In this paper, we have proposed a new computer retina model reflecting the mechanism of transient amacrine cell on the basis of a conventional computer retina model to understand mechanism of visual information processing. The conventional computer retina model contained most of mechanism for other retina models and it was verified with the physiological data. However, we found that a conventional computer retina model doesn't have the mechanism of amacrine cell that was likely to respond to moving stimulus. In proposed model, therefore, a conventional computer model that considered from photoreceptors to bipolar cells and a new computer model that considered for transient amacrine cell and ganglion cell was combined. As we compared the physiological data with the results of computer simulation of transient amacrine cell about fixed stimulus and moving stimulus, we confirmed that the proposed new computer retina model was normally operated.

High-performance smartphones, equipped with a digital camera and an application software, can render conventional bench-top laboratory instruments mobile at affordable costs. As the smartphone-based devices are portable and wireless, they have wide applications especially in providing point-of-care (POC) tests in resource-constrained areas. We developed a hand-held diagnostic system, Mobile SmartScope, which consists of a small optical unit integrated with a smartphone. The performance of the SmartScope was favorably compared with that of conventional light microscopy in detecting and quantifying red blood cells. We also evaluated the fluorescence detection limit of the SmartScope incorporated with a blue light-emitting diode and appropriate optical filters by using fluorescently labeled microbeads for intensity calibration.
Dendritic cells (DC), which consist of several different subsets, specialize in antigen presentation and are critical for mediating the innate and adaptive immune responses. DC subsets can be classified into conventional, plasmacytoid, and monocyte-derived DC in the tumor microenvironment, and each subset plays a different role. Because of the role of intratumoral DCs in initiating antitumor immune responses with tumor-derived antigen presentation to T cells, DCs have been targeted in the treatment of cancer. By regulating the functionality of DCs, several DC-based immunotherapies have been developed, including administration of tumor-derived antigens and DC vaccines. In addition, DCs participate in the mechanisms of classical cancer therapies, such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Thus, regulating DCs is also important in improving current cancer therapies. Here, we will discuss the role of each DC subset in antitumor immune responses, and the current status of DC-related cancer therapies.

In this paper, we propose a drug treatment protocol for the three state HIV infection model that explicitly includes the concentration of healthy T cells, infected T cells, and HIV. While most of the previous methods are not able to achieve the treatment goal in the presence of modelling errors, the proposed method is designed so as to compensate for the model uncertainties. Based on the Jacobain linearization of nonlinear HIV infection model, disturbance observer(DOB) based control is employed to design the drug treatment for the HIV patients. Computer simulation is carried out for nonlinear model in order to compare the performance of the proposed method with that of the conventional technique. The simulation results show that, in the presence of parameter uncertainties, the substantial improvement in the performance can be achieved by the proposed DOB controller.
