FePt nanoparticles suspension was synthesized by reduction of platinum acetylacetonate and decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl in the presence of oleic acid and oleyl amine. FePt nanoparticles were coated on a substrate by convective assembly from the suspension. To prevent the coalescence during the annealing of FePt nanoparticles double convective coatings were tried. First convective coating was for silica particle assembly on a silicon substrate and second one was for FePt nanoparticles on the previously coated silica layers. It was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that FePt nanoparticles were dispersed on the silica particle surface. After annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes under nitrogen atmosphere, FePt nanoparticles on silica particles were maintained in a dispersed state with slight increase of particle size. On the contrary, FePt nanoparticles that were directly coated on silicon substrate showed severe particle growth after annealing due to the close-packing of nanoparticles during assembly. The size variation during annealing was also verified by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). It was suggested that pre-coating, which offered solvent flux oppose to the capillary force between FePt nanoparticles, was an effective method to prevent coalescence of nano-sized particles under high temperature annealing.
The fabrication method of aspheric lens is changed from machining to press molding so as to improve the productivity. In the case of the press molding method, the temperature control of the molding die is most important, because the temperature of each molding die determines the quality of lens. But any practical method for direct measuring of the lens temperature and the die internal temperature is yet unknown. Besides, in the case of the press molding system in which the heating and pressing and cooing of a die is done at separate work stations, the lens productivity of the system for small lens is yet too low. The paper shows an improved structure of convective sequential system, the lens productivity of which is three times as many as the conventional convective system. To know the die internal temperature, numerical results are given using ANSYS. A new convective sequential system is developed and tested. Finally, the Taguchi method is applied in order to optimize the setting conditions of individual work station of the system.
This paper presents the development of new algorithm for identifying and tracking the convective cells in three dimensional reflectivity fields in Cartesian coordinates. First, the radar volume data in spherical coordinate system has been converted into Cartesian coordinate system by the bilinear interpolation. The three-dimensional convective cell has then been identified as a group of spatially consecutive grid points using reflectivity and volume thresholds. The tracking algorithm utilizes a fuzzy logic with four membership functions and their weights. The four fuzzy parameters of speed, area change ratio, reflectivity change ratio, and axis transformation ratio have been newly defined. In order to make their membership functions, the normalized frequency distributions are calculated using the pairs of manually matched cells in the consecutive radar reflectivity fields. The algorithms have been verified for two convective events in summer season. Results show that the algorithms have properly identified storm cells and tracked the same cells successively. The developed algorithms may provide useful short-term forecasting or nowcasting capability of convective storm cells and provide the statistical characteristics of severe weather.
Undesirable convective flow in an NMR tube inhibits the accurate measurement of diffusion coefficients by NMR spectroscopy. To minimize the convection effects, various methods have been suggested, and it has been known that the use of sample rotation can be useful. However, it has not been clearly examined that the convection suppressing effect of the sample rotation under the different spinning speeds. In this study, the relation between convective flow and the sample rotation was investigated using PGSE NMR diffusion experiments to reveal the feasibility for controlling the convective flow in an NMR tube by sample rotation itself. The viscosity effect was also examined using solvents with four different viscosities, acetone-$d_6$ chloroform-d, pyridine-$d_5$, and $D_2O$. The sample rotation showed apparent convection suppressing effects at all temperature range for the low viscosity solvents, acetone-$d_6$ and chloroform-d, even at the faster than 5 Hz spinning rate. The similar patterns were also observed for pyridine-$d_5$ and $D_2O$, which have higher viscosity. This effect was observed even at high temperatures where convective flow arises conspicuously.
Remote sensing techniques using satellites or the scanning weather radars depend mostly on the presence of clouds or precipitation, and leave the extensive regions of clear air unobserved. But wind profilers provide the most direct measurements of mesoscale vertical air motion in the troposphere, even in the context of heavy precipitation. In this paper, the precipitation events during the Changma period was classified into 4 precipitation types - stratiform, mixed stratiform/ convective, deep convective, and shallow convective. The parameters for the classification of analysis are the vertical structure of reflectivity, Doppler velocity, and spectral width measured with the wind profiler at Haenam for a three-year period (2003-2005). In addition, the synoptic fields and total amount of precipitation were analyzed using the Global Final Analyses (FNL) data and the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) data. During the Changma period, the results show that the stratiform type was dominant under the moist-neutral atmosphere in 2003, whereas the deep convective type was under the moist unstable condition in 2004. The stratiform type was no less popular than the deep convective type among four seasons because the moist neutral layer was formed by the convergence between the upper-level jet and the low-level jet, and by the moisture transport along the western rim of the North Pacific subtropical anticyclone.
This study has analyzed the convective heat transfer on the deck exposed to the high-temperature impingement exhausting from a VTOL vehicle. The heat flow of the impingement on the deck is modeled by the convection heat transfer. The convective heat flux generated by the hot impinging jet is investigated by using both convective heat transfer formulation and conjugate heat transfer formulation. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) code was used to compute the heat flux distribution. The RANS equation and the k-e turbulence model were used to analyze the thermal flow of the impinging jet. The heat flux distribution near the stagnation zone obtained by the conjugate heat transfer analysis shows more reasonable than the convective heat transfer analysis.
Convective/stratiform radar echo classification schemes by Steiner et al. (1995) and Biggerstaff and Listemaa (2000) are examined on a monsoonal front during the summer monsoon-Changma period, which is organized as a cloud cluster with mesoscale convective complex. Target radar is S-band with wavelength of 10cm, spatial resolution of 1km, elevation angle interval of 0.5-1.0 degree, and minimum elevation angle of 0.19 degree at Jindo over the Korean Peninsula. For verification of rainfall amount retrieved from the echo classification, ground-based rain gauge observations (Automatic Weather Stations) are examined, converting the radar echo grid data to the station values using the inverse distance weighted method. Improvement from the echo classification is evaluated based on the correlation coefficient and the scattered diagram. Additionally, an optimal use method was designed to produce combined rainfalls from the radar echo and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar (TRMM/PR) data. Optimal values for the radar rain and TRMM/PR rain are inversely weighted according to the error variance statistics for each single station. It is noted how the rainfall distribution during the summer monsoon frontal system is improved from the classification of convective/stratiform echo and the use of the optimal use technique.

The effect of oil on convective boiling of R-123 in an enhanced tube bundle is experimentally investigated at $26.7^{\circ}C$ saturation temperature. The enhanced tube had pores (0.23 mm diameter) and connecting gaps (0.07 mm width), which had been optimized using pure R-123. The effects of oil concentration (0 to 5%), heat flux (10 to $40\;kW/m^2$), mass velocity (8 to $26\;kg/m2^s$) and vapor quality are investigated. The oil significantly reduces the bundle boiling heat transfer coefficient. With 1% oil, the reduction is approximately 35%. Further addition of oil further reduces the heat transfer coefficient. The data are also compared with the pool boiling counterpart. The reduction in the heat transfer coefficient is smaller in a bundle (convective boiling) than in a pool (single-tube pool boiling), with larger difference at a smaller heat flux. Similar to pure R-123 case, the effects of mass velocity and vapor quality are negligible for the convective boiling of R-123/oil mixture.
This study is about the distribution of heat transfer in air conditioning ducts used for marine vessels and oil drilling platforms. As the convective heat transfer coefficient increased, heat transfer was conducted dynamically to inside as it exited to the outlet of duct. The experiment was to determine if the amount of heat transfer generated at the duct exit increased as the convective heat transfer coefficient increased. When the convective heat transfer coefficient was low, the temperature of the duct showed a relatively high temperature difference between the outside and inside of the duct due to the temperature influence of the internal fluid. In case of temperature distribution generated the volume of the duct along the change of the convective heat transfer coefficient, the temperature descended as heat transfer was promoted and the convective heat transfer coefficient increased.
