Frame-Layer H.264 Rate Control for Scene-Change Video at Low Bit Rate (저 비트율 장면 전환 영상에 대한 향상된 H.264 프레임 단위 데이터율 제어 알고리즘)

  • An abrupt scene-change frame is one that is hardly correlated with the previous frames. In that case, because an intra-coded frame has less distortion than an inter-coded one, almost all macroblocks are encoded in intra mode. This breaks up the rate control flow and increases the number of bits used. Since the reference software for H.264 takes no special action for a scene-change frame, several studies have been conducted to solve the problem using the quadratic R-D model. However, since this model is more suitable for inter frames, the existing schemes are unsuitable for computing the QP of the scene-change intra frame. In this paper, an improved rate control scheme accounting for the characteristics of intra coding is proposed for scene-change frames. The proposed scheme was validated using 16 test sequences. The results showed that the proposed scheme performed better than the existing H.264 rate control schemes. The PSNR was improved by an average of 0.4-0.6 dB and a maximum of 1.1-1.6 dB. The PSNR fluctuation was also in proved by an average of 18.6 %.

  • Various control algorithms are available to suppress the vibration of a system subjected to disturbances. LQ algorithm is simple and easy to implement the hardwares, but it lacks robustness for uncertainties and often causes difficulty in determining the weighting matrices. This study focuses on the effectiveness ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) algorithm as the alternative to LQ applied to control the vibration of a building under the seismic excitation. The building is of moment resisting steel frames and assumed to behave within the elastic range. The brief overview of LQ and ILQ algorithms is introduced, and the displacement responses of the structure using ILQ algorithm are compared with those obtained from LQ control. The magnitude of control forces are also determined and compared for both LQ and ILQ algorithm.

  • We propose a reconciliation sublayer (RS)-based lane and traffic control protocol for energy-efficient 40-G/100-G Ethernet. The RS performs active/inactive lane control and data rate adaptation depending on active lane information received from the upper layer. This protocol does not result in a processing delay in the media access control layer, nor is an additional buffer required at the physical layer for dynamic lane control. It ensures minimal delay and no overhead for the exchange of control frames and provides a simple adaptive data rate.

Region-based H.263 Video Codec with Effective Rate Control Algorithm for Low VBR Video

  • A region-based video codec based on the H.263+ standard is examined and its associated novel rate control scheme is proposed in this work. The region-based coding scheme is a hybrid method that consists of the traditional block DCT coding and the object-based coding. Basically, we adopt H.263+ as the platform, and develop a fast macroblock-based segmentation method to implement the region-based video codec. The proposed rate control solution includes rate control in three levels: encoding frame selection, frame-layer rate control and macroblock-layer rate control. The goal is to enhance the visual quality of decoded frames at low bit rates. The efficiency of proposed rate control scheme applied to the region-based video codes is demonstrated via several typical test sequences.

A Study on the Dynamic Flow Control Algorithm on Video Conference System (화상회의 시스템에서 동적 흐름 제어기법에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes a dynamic end-to-end flow control algorithm that is more effective than previous methods considering either the Rate of Packet Loss (RPL) or Round Trip Time (RTT). When the RPL is under normal conditions, the current network status will be in one of three defined states by using the RTT and this makes bandwidth control precise before serious packet loss occurs. If the RPL exceeds a critical level, then the network is considered to be in a fourth state. Suitable transmission rates are determined depending on the network status and are controlled by adjusting not only the number of transmitted frames but also the quality of the frames. In this paper, we present some experimental results of the proposed algorithm. According to our quantitative analysis, the proposed method performs 1.6 to 6 times better than the previous method in terms of the RPL. At the same time, the total number of transmitted packets is increased, which indicates that the proposed method can provide greater bandwidth capacity than previous methods.

For given QP, bits according to video characteristics, and current frame is close correlation between the adjacent frames. Using the statistical characteristic, we obtain change of occurrence bit about QP to apply the bit amount by QP from the video characteristic and applied in the estimated bit amount of the current frame. In addition, we use weight with QP and occurrence bit amount that is statistical information of encoded previous frames. Simulation results show that the proposed rate control scheme achieves time saving of more than 99% over JM 12.1 rate control algorithm. Nevertheless, PSNR and bit rate were almost same as the performances of JM.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient and adaptive rate control in Frame-layer for H.264/AVC. For given QP, bits according to video characteristics, and current frame is close correlation between the adjacent frames. Using the statistical characteristic, we obtain change of occurrence bit about QP to apply the bit amount by QP from the video characteristic and applied in the estimated bit amount of the each unit of current frame. In addition, we use weight with QP and occurrence bit amount that is statistical information of encoded previous frames. Simulation results show that the proposed rate control scheme could not only achieves time saving of more than 99% over existing rate control algorithm, but also increase the average PSNR of reconstructed video for around 0.02~0.43 dB in all the sequences.

  • This paper deals with the real-time monitoring and control system using PC, PDA(Win CE embedded device) and PCS(based BREW platform). The camera attached to the server captures the moving target, and the captured frame of color image is encoded in JPEG for image compression at the server. The client(PC, PDA, PCS) receives the image data from the remote server and the received image is decoded from decompression. We use the TCP/IP protocol to send the image frames. The client can control the position of the camera by sending the control command to the server. Two DC servo motors for the camera are controlled in any directions, up-down and left-right, by the controller which is communicating with the server via the serial communication to get the control command. In this way, on the client we can monitor the moving images at the server and also control the position of the camera.

  • This paper presents a visual servoing combined by Neural Network with optimal structure and predictive control for robotic manipulators to tracking or grasping of the moving object. Using the four feature image information from CCD camera attached to end-effector of RV-M2 robot manipulator having 5 dof, we want to predict the updated position of the object. The Kalman filter is used to estimate the motion parameters, namely the state vector of the moving object in successive image frames, and using the multi layer feedforward neural network that permits the connection of other layers, evolutionary programming(EP) that search the structure and weight of the neural network, and evolution strategies(ES) which training the weight of neuron, we optimized the net structure of control scheme. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme and predictive control of moving object will be verified by computer simulation.
