  • Present paper is attempted to introduce the phenomenon of 'after contraction' in isolated cardiac-muscle. Papillary muscles were removed from cat right ventricle and were used as a preparation. The muscle strip was Placed in tissue bath which is kept in steady temperature of around $25^{\circ}C$ and was perfuced by Tyrode solution, saturated with 95% $O_2$ and 5% $CO_2.$ under the condition of high calcium (8.2-10.0 mM/l), low sodium (72.4-70.0 mM/l) perfusion with the administration of epinephrine (1-2 mg/l) into tile tissue bath normally triggered muscle contraction was followed by oscillatory, repetitive contractions - after contraction. The phenomenon of after contraction was augumented by decrease in tissue bath temperature and by increase in number of preceding beats and in driving rate. Authors were able to maintain the phenomenon in prominent and steady state giving proper experimental conditions such as fixed bath temperature (ranged from $22^{\circ}C\;to\;27^{\circ}C$), suitable driving rate (20 per minute in average) and perfusion of high calcium, loll sodium and 1-2 mg/l of epinephrine. In some preparations, the strength of after contraction (second contraction) reached up-to 80% of normally triggered contraction and five repetitive contractions were observed as largest number of after contractions. Intracellular action potential measured in the muscle which was beating regulary showing steady after contraction revealed no oscillating after potential in most parts of the muscle but in few cases oscillating changes of after potentials were detectable. In electrogram of the muscle preparation recorded by means of contact electrode prominent, oscillating after potentials were observable when the recorder was set at highest sensitivity. It still is not clear that whether after contraction is the phenomenon which corresponds to those changes in action potential, oscillating after potential, of the muscle preparation. Possible mechanism of the phenomenon of after contraction relating with after potential changes was proposed. Detailed results obtained from further studies on after contraction and concrete discussion on the phenomenon will be reported by authors.

  • The contraction of renal arterial strip by no.epineph.me (NE) or 40 mM $K^+$ were Significantly attenuated after histamine $(10^{-5}\;M)-induced$ contraction. The mechanisms of this phenomenon were investigated in the helical strips of isolated renal artery with the measurement of isometric tension. The arterial strip was immersed in the tris-buffered Tyrode's solution which was equilibrated with 100% $O_2\;at\;35^{\circ}C$. The contraction was induced by NE or 40 mM $K^+$ during the recovery from the histamine-induced contraction which lasted for 15 minutes. The contraction by NE was also attenuated in the $Ca^{2+}-free$ Tyrode's solution and the increase of contraction by addition of 2 mM $Ca^{2+}$ was attenuated as well. This attenuation phenomenon was not observed in the presence of low concentration $(3{\times}10^{-7}\;M)$ of histamine. This attenuation was not affected by destruction of endothelium, pretreatment with papaverine or propranolol. This attenuation was partially inhibited by pretreatment of ouabain or in low $K^+(0.5 mM)$ Tyrode's solution. But the attenuation in the $Ca^{2+}-free$ Tyrode's solution was not inhibited. Furthermore this attenuation was completely blocked by pretreatment of djphenhydramine $(H_1-receptor blocker)$ and potentiated by pretreatment of cimetidine $(H_2-receptor\;blocker)$. This attenuation Phenomenon was disappeared after recovery of 1 hour. From the above results, it is suggested that the attenuation phenomenon may be resulted partially from the activation of $Na^+-K^+$ exchange pump and partially from the depletion of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ pool after the histamine-induced contraction mediated through $H_1-receptor$ function.

  • This study was carried out to find out the relationship between qualities and contraction phenomenon of silk fibers by treatment of concentrated neutral salts. The contraction effects of silk fibers showed the critical point on the treatment conditions of concentration, temperature and time, among three kinds of neutral salts such as calcium nitrate, calcium chloride and lithium bromide. But, The silk fibers, pretreated with bromide and/or formaldehyde, did not show the contraction upon treating with calcium nitrate. This indicates that tyrosine and serine can be correlated with the contraction reaction because of coupling these amino acids with bromide and formaldehyde. In conclusion, a mechanism for the contraction of silk fiber with highly concentrated calcium nitrate solution is supposed as follows. At the initial stage of ration, the water was penetrated into the amorphous regions and fibers swollen, therefore, the contraction took place mainly in amorphous regions, which have plenty of functional groups with hydroxyl residues. Then, as the calcium nitrate is penetrated into the microfibril, the gydrogen bonds of tyrosine and serine residues and broken and crystalline regions are more and more influenced by increasing concentration of calcium nitrate solution. Microgibrils of crystalline regions become entangled, contracted to linear direction and rearranged to form new stable hydrogen bonds.

  • This paper aims to identify the causes and mechanisms of contraction-expansion noise in refrigerators and proposes noise reduction methods. Contraction-expansion noise generated in refrigerators is mainly due to stick-slip phenomenon occurring on the contact surface between inner parts. Friction experiments were conducted to identify the factors causing the stick-slip phenomenon. Furthermore, the vibration level of the internal components was measured to determine the characteristics and location of the contraction-expansion noise. Based on the experimental results, experiments have been conducted to verify the noise characteristics for each factor. From this, it was confirmed that the friction experiment and the refrigerator contraction-expansion noise generation location and frequency were the same. The vibration level also increased as the vertical force was increased due to load loading. Also, it was confirmed that the contraction-expansion noise was reduced when the surface roughness was increased. Therefore, it was concluded that increasing the surface roughness of the contact surface in the same way as the results of the friction experiment was the method of reducing contraction-expansion noise.

  • It well known that the magnitude of contraction and the shape of action potential depend upon the stimulation frequency and the duration of resting period (positive and negative staircase). Although the underlying mechanism of the staircase phenomenon is not fully understood, it has been suggested that staircase could be related to the intracllular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration. In order to elucidate the role of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ on the contraction and action potential staircases, we examined the effects of 1 mM 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), 0.5 uM verapamil, 1 uM ryanodine, or reduction of extracellular Na concentration to 30% $(substituted\;by\;equimolar\;Li^+)$ in small atrial strips of the rabbit $(3{\times}10\;mm)$. The results obitained were as follows; 1) When the stimulation frequency was increased from 0.1 Hz to 2 Hz, positive staircase of the contraction and elevation of plateau level in action potential were found in control and the conditions of Na reduction and treatments of 4-AP, verapamil and ryanodine. 2) When stimulation frequency returned to 0.1 Hz from 1 min rest just after 2 Hz stimulation fer 1 min, the magnitudes of initial few contractions were larger than that of steady state contraction (post-rest potentiation) except, ryanodine or Na-reduction groups. 3) Negative staircase of contraction was developed in control and 4-AP group at post-rest 0.1 Hz stimulation and the plateau level of the action potential was decreased at the same time. But the reduction of contraction or the plateau level was much smaller in 4-AP group and than in control. From the above results it can be concluded that contraction and action potential staircase is dependent upon transmembrane $Ca^{2+}-current\;and\;Ca^{2+}$release from the SR.

  • Background Primary contraction of full-thickness graft has been traditionally quoted to be 40%. There are lacunae in literature to elaborate on the factors influencing it ever since. Methods About 75 subjects who underwent full-thickness grafting procedures to resurface small defects were included in the study. The initial and final graft dimensions after primary contraction were traced on X-ray templates and the percentage of contraction was evaluated using the graphical method. This was further correlated with age, collagen, elastic matrix metalloproteinases-1 (MMP-1) and -2 content along with dermal thickness of the skin specimen sent from the graft. Results The primary contraction of the graft had a very significant correlation only with the initial size of graft harvested with a linear regression of 33.3% and a Spearman's correlation of 0.587 significant at a p-value of 0.001. Conclusion This study though preliminary tries to highlight an important factor that primary contraction of grafts is a physical phenomenon independent of its contents like collagen, elastin, or MMP-1 and -2 or age and dependent on its initial size of harvest instead.

  • A method to reduce the Contraction and Expansion (CE) noise occurred in an air conditioner is investigated. The noise is measured during the cooling and heating phases in a temperature and humidity chamber to identify the generating phenomenon of CE noise of the air conditioner and the decomposition method is used to estimate its occurrence location. The CE noise of an air conditioner is known to be caused by a stick-slip phenomenon generated by joints of parts connected to the lower decor. Thus a friction experiment was conducted to investigate noise inducing factors. Also, this study established evaluation criteria to effectively analyze the results from friction experiments. Experimental results indicate that increasing surface roughness on both sides of joints is effective. Accordingly, the effect of increased surface roughness on joints of upper and lower decor of air conditioners is evaluated to see its feasibility in a temperature and humidity chamber.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of vibration exercise using surface electromyography. Seven male collegiate wrestlers were participated in this study. Each subject stood on the platform and the vibration was induced for 1min. WEMG8 EMG system was used to record muscle activity from Vastus lateralis, Biceps Femoris, Tibialis Anterior, and Gastrocnemius. The EMG data were sampled for 30 sec. during non-vibration and vibration half squat position, respectively. The raw data were band pass filtered to remove noise and full wave rectified Paired sample t-test were performed to see the differences of maximum and average EMG between non-vibration and vibration trials. The results indicated that vibration produced much more muscle contraction than that of non-vibration trial for all selected muscles even though the significant difference was found only from Biceps Femoris. This phenomenon was due to the individual differences so care must be taken to evaluate vibration intensity and position before personal training.
