A 3D Terrain Reconstruction System using Navigation Information and Realtime-Updated Terrain Data (항법정보와 실시간 업데이트 지형 데이터를 사용한 3D 지형 재구축 시스템)

  • A terrain is an essential element for constructing a virtual world in which game characters and objects make various interactions with one another. Creating a terrain requires a great deal of time and repetitive editing processes. This paper presents a 3D terrain reconstruction system to create 3D terrain in virtual space based on real terrain data. In this system, it converts the coordinate system of the height maps which are generated from a stereo camera and a laser scanner from global GPS into 3D world using the x and z axis vectors of the global GPS coordinate system. It calculates the movement vectors and the rotation matrices frame by frame. Terrain meshes are dynamically generated and rendered in the virtual areas which are represented in an undirected graph. The rendering meshes are exactly created and updated by correcting terrain data errors. In our experiments, the FPS of the system was regularly checked until the terrain was reconstructed by our system, and the visualization quality of the terrain was reviewed. As a result, our system shows that it has 3 times higher FPS than other terrain management systems with Quadtree for small area, improves 40% than others for large area. The visualization of terrain data maintains the same shape as the contour of real terrain. This system could be used for the terrain system of realtime 3D games to generate terrain on real time, and for the terrain design work of CG Movies.

  • Line drawing is a widely used style in non-photorealistic rendering because it generates expressive descriptions of object shapes with a set of strokes. Although various techniques for line drawing of 3D objects have been developed, line drawing of 2D images has attracted little attention despite interesting applications, such as image stylization. This paper presents a robust and effective technique for generating line drawings from 2D images. The algorithm consists of three parts; filtering, linking, and stylization. In the filtering process, it constructs a likelihood function that estimates possible positions of lines in an image. In the linking process, line strokes are extracted from the likelihood function using clustering and graph search algorithms. In the stylization process, it generates various kinds of line drawings by applying curve fitting and texture mapping to the extracted line strokes. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed technique can be applied to the various kinds of line drawings from 2D images with detail control.

Collapse of steel cantilever roof of tribune induced by snow loads

  • In this paper, it is aimed to present a detail investigation related to structural behavior of laterally unrestrained steel cantilever roof of tribune with slender cross section. The structure is located in Tutak town in $A{\breve{g}}r{{\i}}$ and collapsed on October 25, 2015 at eastern part of Turkey is considered as a case study. This mild sloped roof structure was built from a variable I beam, and supported on steel columns of 5.5 m height covering totally $240m^2$ closed area in plan. The roof of tribune collapsed completely without any indication during first snowfall after construction at midnight a winter day, fortunately before the opening hours. The meteorological records and observations of local persons are combined together to estimate the intensity of snow load in the region and it is compared with the code specified values. Also, the wide/thickness and height/thickness ratios for flange and web are evaluated according to the design codes. Three dimensional finite element model of the existing steel tribune roof is generated considering project drawings and site investigations using commercially available software ANSYS. The displacements, principal stresses and strains along to the cantilever length and column height are given as contour diagrams and graph format. In addition to site investigation, the numerical and analytical works conducted in this study indicate that the unequivocal reasons of the collapse are overloading action of snow load intensity, some mistakes made in the design of steel cantilever beams, insufficient strength and rigidity of the main structural elements, and construction workmanship errors.

Automatic Extraction Method for Basic Insect Footprint Segments (곤충 발자국 인식을 위한 자동 영역 추출기법)

  • In this paper, we proposed a automatic extraction method as a preprocessing stage for extraction of basic insect footprint segments. In general, sizes and strides of footprints may be different according to type and size of an insect for recognition. Therefore we proposed an improved algorithm for extraction of basic insect footprint segments regardless of size and stride of footprint pattern. In the proposed algorithm, threshold value for clustering is determined automatically using contour shape of the graph created by accumulating distances between all the spots of footprint pattern. In the experimental results applying the proposed method, The basic footprint segments should be extracted from a whole insect footprint image using significant information in order to find out appropriate features for classification.

  • This study aims to rethink the meaning of graphicacy, discuss the possible criteria to evaluate the level of graphicacy, and show how the graphicacy differs through different grades. First, it finds that as school grades advance, implicit information processing abilities, and conceptual information processing abilities were more required comparing to explicit information processing abilities, when interpreting graphic data. Secondly, the percentage of items which examinee showed a proficient level, decreased as school grades advanced. Thirdly, the graphicacy level of sixth graders was the status of being able to derive explicit information from pictorial maps and read implicit information in simple contour map or line graphs. Ninth graders were able to infer causal relationship between geographic phenomenons by utilizing graphic materials. Tenth graders could read graphic materials by utilizing simple knowledge and experience.

Extraction of Basic Insect Footprint Segments Using ART2 of Automatic Threshold Setting (자동 임계값 설정 ART2를 이용한 곤충 발자국의 인식 대상 영역 추출)

  • In a process of insect footprint recognition, basic footprint segments should be extracted from a whole insect footprint image in order to find out appropriate features for classification. In this paper, we used a clustering method as a preprocessing stage for extraction of basic insect footprint segments. In general, sizes and strides of footprints may be different according to type and sire of an insect for recognition. Therefore we proposed an improved ART2 algorithm for extraction or basic insect footprint segments regardless of size and stride or footprint pattern. In the proposed ART2 algorithm, threshold value for clustering is determined automatically using contour shape of the graph created by accumulating distances between all the spots of footprint pattern. In the experimental results applying the proposed method to two kinds of insect footprint patterns, we could see that all the clustering results were accomplished correctly.
