  • For the design and set-up of neutron induced prompt ${\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy system using $^{252}Cf$ neutron source, the effects of shielding and moderator materials have been examined. The $^{252}Cf$ source being used for TLD badge calibration in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute was utilized for this preliminary experiment. The ${\gamma}$-ray background and prompt ${\gamma}$-ray spectrum of the sample containing Cl were measured using HPGe (GMX 60% relative efficiency) located at the inside of the system connected to notebook PC at the outside of the system (about 20 meter distance). The background activities of neutron and ${\gamma}$-rays were measured with neutron survey meter as well as ${\gamma}$-ray survey meters, respectively and the system was designed to minimize the activities. Prompt ${\gamma}$-ray spectrum was measured using ${\gamma}$-${\gamma}$ coincident system for reduce the background and the continuum spectrum. The optimum system was designed and set up using the experimental data obtained.

The intensities and central velocities of line profiles show significant variations with positions. In contrast to the in tensities of the low J-level transitions which gradually increase from the central source toward the outside region the HC3N emission of the high J-level transition become stronger toward the central radio continuum source MO5. Systematic chainge in the radial velocity of each line profile occurs along north-south direction there are a few peaks in most line profiles, and these indicate that there not multiple velocity components along the line of sight. Distributions of excitation temperah at and column density which were estimated from the excitation calculations show the existence of a small(IxEpc),hot(Tex> SOK) core which contains two tempegatlue peaks at -15" east and north of MDS. The column density of HCaN is (1-3):n1014cm-2. Column density at distant position from MD5 is larger than that in the (:entral region. We have deduced that this hot-core has a mass of 10sR1 which i:s about an order of magnitude larger those obtained by previous studies.previous studies.

  • Molecular simulations via the molecular dynamics method have been carried out to an equation of state of penetrable-sphere model fluids over a wide range of packing fraction ${\phi}$ and finite repulsive energy ${\varepsilon}^*$. The resulting simulation data are compared to theoretical predictions from the two limiting cases of high- and low-penetrability approximations available in the literature. A good agreement between theoretical and simulation results is observed ill the case of ${\varepsilon}^*$ <3.0. However, for the highly repulsive energy systems of ${\varepsilon}^*{\geqq}3.0$, where the potential energy barrier is more than two times higher than the particle kinetic energy, a poor agreement is found due to the clustering formation and the non-continuum size effects in the dense systems of ${\phi}{\geqq}0.7$ and ${\varepsilon}^*$=6.0.

  • In acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria, there is a continuum from mild to severe malaria. However, no mathematical system is available to predict uncomplicated falciparum malaria patients turning to severe malaria. This study aimed to devise a simple and reliable model of Malaria Severity Prognostic Score (MSPS). The study was performed in adult patients with acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria admitted to the Bangkok Hospital for Tropical Diseases between 2000 and 2005. Total 38 initial clinical parameters were identified to predict the usual recovery or deterioration to severe malaria. The stepwise multiple discriminant analysis was performed to get a linear discriminant equation. The results showed that 4.3% of study patients turned to severe malaria. The MSPS = 4.38 (schizontemia) + 1.62 (gametocytemia) + 1.17 (dehydration) + 0.14 (overweight by body mass index; BMI) + 0.05 (initial pulse rate) + 0.04 (duration of fever before admission)-0.50 (past history of malaria in last 1 year). 0.48 (initial serum albumin)-5.66. Based on the validation study in other malaria patients, the sensitivity and specificity were 88.8% and 88.4%, respectively. We conclude that the MSPS is a simple screening tool for predicting uncomplicated falciparum malaria patients turning to severe malaria. However, the MSPS may need revalidation indifferent geographical areas before utilized at specific places.

  • Reducing the friction of engine parts is an important issue in engine design. The loss of energy in the piston assembly due to mechanical friction ranges from 40 to 55%, and there is an increase in the total energy of about 5% if the friction of the piston can be removed. In order to reduce the friction loss at the level of each engine part, it is necessary to perform a comparative analysis with other engines to determine the important factors affecting the energy loss. Several studies have been performed to analyze the lubrication based on hydrodynamic modeling, since a piston lubrication system has dimensions in the nanoscale to microscale domain. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the correlations between the molecular and continuum systems. In this study, we investigated the friction changes due to the various interactions between molecules in the wall/fluid interface, where a microscopic movement of the oil film occurs along the cylinder liner of the engine.

  • This study aims at developing the measurement tool of reading motivation using self-determination theory (SDT). SDT is not simply divided into the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. SDT resides along a continuum, with amotivation, external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation, intrinsic motivation. SDT addresses the process of internalization of various extrinsic motives. This study analyzed motivation factor of the measurement tool such as MRQ (motivations for reading questionnaire), MRP (motivation to read profile) ERAS (elementary reading attitude survey, RSCS (reading self-concept scale). The study re-classified analysis results based on SDT. Ultimately, this study was proposed measurement tool of reading motivation using SDT has 6 area, 30 items.

  • To determine the correlation between mast cells(MCs) and neoangiogenesis in the growth and progression of cervical cancer, we investigated mast cell density(MCD), microvessel density(MVD) and the expression of vascular epithelial growth factor(VEGF) in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive suqamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Forty-five cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN I, II and III), 15 microinvasive carcinomas, 15 invasive squamous cell carcinomas and 20 normal cervical epithelia were included in this study. MCs were stained with anti-c-Kit antibody and alcian blue, microvessels with anti-factor VIII antibody and VEGF with anti-VEGF antibody. The adjacent fields of both normal and neoplastic epithelium were used for counting MCs and microvessels. Computerized image analysis was used to evaluate MCD and MVD. MCD and MVD were the mean numbers per $1mm^2$ counted in 5-10 high and low power fields respectively. In both c-Kit and alcian blue stained sections, MCD progressively increased along the continuum from CIN I to invasive squamous cell carcinoma(p<0.001). MVD increased significantly with cervical neoplasia progression, from CIN to invasive squamous cell carcinoma (p<0.001). In double c-Kit and Factor VIII-stained sections, MCs were mainly present in the areas adjacent to newly formed blood vessels. However, there were no significant differences in MCD and MVD between normal epithelum and CIN I. A strong correlation was also observed between MCD and MVD. In double VEGF and alcian blue-stained sections, VEGF was expressed in only MCs. Strong VEGF-positive MCs were particularly abundant around the tumorous region. Our results suggest that MCs may upregulate neoangiogenesis by VGEF secretion in the development and progression of cervical neoplasia.

  • This study derives the differential equations of free vertical bending and torsional vibrations for two- and three-pylon suspension bridges using d'Alembert's principle. The respective algorithms for natural vibration frequency and vibration mode are established through the separation of variables. In the case of the three-pylon suspension bridge, the effect of the along-bridge bending vibration of the middle pylon on the vertical bending vibration of the entire bridge is considered. The impact of torsional vibration of the middle pylon about the vertical axis on the torsional vibration of the entire bridge is also analyzed in detail. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by two engineering examples. A comparative analysis of the results obtained via the proposed and more intricate finite element methods confirmed the former feasibility. Finally, the middle pylon stiffness effect on the vibration frequency of the three-pylon suspension bridge is discussed. It is found that the vibration frequencies of the first- and third-order vertical bending and torsional modes both increase with the middle pylon stiffness. However, the increase amplitudes of third-order bending and torsional modes are relatively small with the middle pylon stiffness increase. Moreover, the second-order bending and torsional frequencies do not change with the middle pylon stiffness.

  • Ab initio calculations are carried out on protonation equilibria of 5-memberedheteroaromatic aldehydes (5MHAs;heteroatom Y = NH, O, PH,and S and substituentZ = NH2, OCH3, SCH3, CH3, H, Cl, CHO, CN,NO2) at the $MP2}6-31G*$ level. Naturalbond orbital (NBO) analyses show that the optimal localized natural Lewis structures of the protonated aldehydes,(P), are ortho (C3) protonated (for Y = O, PH and S) and N-pro-tonated (for Y = NH) forms in contrast to the standard structural Lewis formula for aldehydes, (R). The delo-calizability of ${\pilone}-pairon$ the heteroatom $(n{\pi}(Y))$ is in the order Y = NH > O > S > PH. The transmission efficiency of (Z) substituent effects to the carbonyl moiety run parallel to the delocalizability of $n{\pi}(Y)$ for R,but is dominantly influenced by the cationic charge on $C{\alpha}(C{\alpha}+)$ for P, which is in the reverse order of thede-localizability of $n{\pi}(Y).$ The Hammett ${\rho}values$ for variation of Z in the protonation are determined by the dif-ference in the transmission efficiencies between Pand R stateat simple interpretation of their magnitude is not warranted. However, the magnitude of the gas-phase ${\rho}z+$ values decreases as the level ofcomputation is raised from RHF/3-21G* to RHF/6-31G* and to $MP2}6-31G*$ but increases again at the MP4SDQ/6-31G* level. Further decrease occurs when solvent effect (water) is accounted for by the SCRF method. Comparison of the SCRF ${\rho}z+values$ with those determined in the aqueous acid solution for Y = S and CHCH shows inadequacy of accounting for the solvent effects on the ${\rho}values$ by a continuum model. It is noteworthy that semiempirical calculations, especially theAM1 method, give even lower magnitude of the gas-phase ${\rho}values.
