2D continuum viscodamage-embedded discontinuity model with second order mid-point scheme

  • This paper deals with numerical modeling of dynamic failure phenomena in rate-sensitive brittle and/or ductile materials. To this end, a two-dimensional continuum viscodamage-embedded discontinuity model, which is based on our previous work (see Do et al. 2017), is developed. More specifically, the pre-peak nonlinear and rate-sensitive hardening response of the material behavior, representing the fracture-process zone creation, is described by a rate-dependent continuum damage model. Meanwhile, an embedded displacement discontinuity model is used to formulate the post-peak response, involving the macro-crack creation accompanied by exponential softening. The numerical implementation in the context of the finite element method exploiting the second-order mid-point scheme is discussed in detail. In order to show the performance of the model several numerical examples are included.

Low-threshold Optical Bistability Based on Bound States in the Continuum

  • Low-threshold optical bistability is essential for practical nonlinear optical applications. Many bistable optical devices based on high-quality-factor resonators have been proposed to reduce the threshold intensity. However, demonstrating high-quality-factor resonance requires complex fabrication techniques. In this work, we numerically demonstrate optical bistability with bound states in the continuum in a simple one-dimensional Si photonic crystal. The designed structure supports bound states in the continuum, producing an ultrahigh quality factor without tough fabrication conditions. The threshold intensity of the designed device is 150 MW/cm2 at the optical communication wavelength. This scheme may lead to a new class of nonlinear photonics.

Deep polarization observations of a ram pressure stripped galaxy, NGC 4522

  • We present high-resolution, high-sensitivity continuum data of NGC 4522 observed at 3 cm (X-band) and 10 cm (S-band) in full polarization mode using the JVLA. This observation has 2 - 4 times better spatial resolution and 2 - 5 times better sensitivity compared to previous continuum observations. NGC 4522 is a Virgo spiral galaxy undergoing active ram pressure stripping. This galaxy is particularly well known for the CO emission detected outside its stellar disk, some of which coincides with the extraplanar HI gas and Halpha patches. The major goal of our JVLA observation is to leverage our understanding of the influence of the ram pressure on the general ISM field and multi-phase medium. By combining our new deep radio continuum data and previous observations, we will investigate how the B-field properties can be affected by the ram pressure, and what roles the B-field plays in the stripping process of the multi-phased ISM and in the star formation activity when the ram pressure is present.

A Study on the Origin of Record Continuum Theory : Focusing on the Comparison with Record Lifecycle Model (레코드 컨티뉴엄 이론의 기원에 관한 연구 라이프사이클 모델과의 비교를 중심으로)

  • In this study, the origin of the record continuum theory was analyzed in conjunction with the record management situation in Australia after the mid-20th century and record lifecycle model. For an in-depth understanding of the record continuum theory, it is necessary to consider the background and process of its formation, and to analyze the lifecycle model itself in terms of a theoretical system built with reflections on the lifecycle model. To this end, first of all, with the aim of analyzing the historical background of the formation of the record continuum theory, the background and process that led to intensive illumination of the US lifecycle model in the process of seeking an independent public records management system in Australia in the 1950s were reviewed. Then, the meaning and limitations of the lifecycle model were considered along with the background of the formation. In order to examine the main contents, significance, and limitations of the lifecycle model, it is necessary to analyze the circumstances under which it was formed. Based on this analysis, finally, the problems associated with the application of the lifecycle model in Australia's new record creation environment, as well as the factors that were the origin of the newly born record continuum theory were examined.

Epistemological Implications of Scientific Reasoning Designed by Preservice Elementary Teachers during Their Simulation Teaching: Evidence-Explanation Continuum Perspective (초등 예비교사가 모의수업 시연에서 구성한 과학적 추론의 인식론적 의미 - 증거-설명 연속선의 관점 -)

  • In this study, I took the evidence-explanation (E-E) continuum perspective to examine the epistemological implications of scientific reasoning cases designed by preservice elementary teachers during their simulation teaching. The participants were four preservice teachers who conducted simulation instruction on the seasons and high/low air pressure and wind. The selected discourse episodes, which included cases of inductive, deductive, or abductive reasoning, were analyzed for their epistemological implications-specifically, the role played by the reasoning cases in the E-E continuum. The two preservice teachers conducting seasons classes used hypothetical-deductive reasoning when they identified evidence by comparing student-group data and tested a hypothesis by comparing the evidence with the hypothetical statement. However, they did not adopt explicit reasoning for creating the hypothesis or constructing a model from the evidence. The two preservice teachers conducting air pressure and wind classes applied inductive reasoning to find evidence by summarizing the student-group data and adopted linear logic-structured deductive reasoning to construct the final explanation. In teaching similar topics, the preservice teachers showed similar epistemic processes in their scientific reasoning cases. However, the epistemological implications of the instruction were not similar in terms of the E-E continuum. In addition, except in one case, the teachers were neither good at abductive reasoning for creating a hypothesis or an explanatory model, nor good at using reasoning to construct a model from the evidence. The E-E continuum helps in examining the epistemological implications of scientific reasoning and can be an alternative way of transmitting scientific reasoning.

A dust continuum radiative transfer module

  • We have developed a module for the dust continuum radiative transfer calculation as part of "Packages of Unified modeling for Radiative transfer, gas Energetics, and Chemistry (PUREC)". PUREC will be applied to interprete observations of protoplanetary disks. When a disk is under the hydrostatic equilibrium condition, the dust temperature and the vertical density structure should be calculated simultaneously. This module calculates the dust temperature by using the method of mean intensity (Lucy et al. 1999). In the very optically thick mid-palne, the Monte-carlo method is not efficient, thus, we apply "modified random walk" and "Partial Diffusion Approximation" to the module. The module has been verified by bechmark tests.

  • We have obtained photometry of stars in NGC 2264 with several combinations of H$\alpha$ filters and continuum filters. The main purpose of these observations was to determine the best filter combination for selecting low ma!,s member stars in their Pre-Main Sequence (PMS) stage using H$\alpha$ photometry. A narrow band H$\alpha$ filter (${\Delta}{\lambda}$ = $l0{\AA}$) with any combination of continuum filters showed the highest resolution in the H$\alpha$ photometry.

  • In this paper numerical algorithm for the continuum large crack model is proposed based on the return-mapping formulation. The numerical test results show that the present algorithm works appropriately under cyclic loading. It is also shown that in continuum damage models a large crack model to prevent excessive tensile plastic strain should be used to have realistic cyclic loading simulation results.

The Experience of Sexual Violence of Female Students in Chonnam (전남지역 여대생의 성폭력 경험 실태)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of experience of sexual violence in terms of a continuum. For the purpose, this study made use of the questionnaire data and the interview resources collected from 243 female students. The staticstics used for data analysis were frequencies, percentiles and ANOVA. The major findings were as follows. The level of experience of sexual violence in terms of a continuum was high. Most female students recognized lots of unpleasant sexual behaviors as sexual violence. The level of experience and recognition of sexual violence differed significantly according to age and sexrole attitude. (Korean J Human Ecology 1(2):37∼47. 1998)
