In this study, field measurements and analysis of vibration before and after the installation of continuously welded rail were performed. The vibration data obtained at the same locations before and after were analyzed to find out the characteristics of vibration level. The component of train-induced impulsive vibration at the rail joints varies depending upon the distance from the source, however mostly low frequency vibration which propagates long distance causes the problems of vibration. Even though it is expected that there may be certain degree of discrepancy in the amount of reduction in vibration depending upon site ground conditions, it was found that installation of continuously welded rail shows reduction in train-induced vibration.
Seoul Metro continuously converted the standard rail into continuous welded rail since the later part of 1990's, and currently, most of the sectors of the Seoul Metro are continuous welded rails. As the continuous welded rail is inhibited by the contraction and expansion force of the rail as well as rail-bed, this force is stored as the internal stress of the rail with the exception of portion of the both ends of the continuous welded rail. If the contraction and expansion of the rail is restricted, the internal stress, that is, the force in the direction of the axis, is proportional to the cross-sectional area of the rail. Therefore, with regards to the temperature changes, the internal stress changes in accordance with the type of rail, bolting apparatus, railroad tie and rail-bed. As such, the rail temperature becomes important data in securing the gap at the adjoining section of the rail in the standard rail section, and to determine the setting temperature for the continuous welded rail. In addition, it becomes basic data for maintenance of the track. Accordingly, this thesis introduces cases of installation of rail temperature detector in order to prevent and manage track defectiveness due to increase in rail temperature, and to utilize as basic data at the time of various construction and maintenance. Furthermore, this thesis aims to assist maintenance of track through systematic temperature management in the future by looking into means of its utilization.
Where the track is continuously welded over the bridge, the longitudinal forces will be distributed interactively between the track and the sub-structure by the rail-bridge interaction mechanism. The ratio between the longitudinal forces transmitted in each elements depends on the magnitude of the ballast resistance and the stiffness of the sub-structures. In this paper, the main factors affect on the longitudinal rail force are discussed and the parametric study for the behavior of CWR(Continuous Welded Rail) track was executed. It is concluded that the horizontal ballast resistance and the stiffness of the bridge sub-structure are the significant parameters affecting the stability of the continuous welded rail track.
Continuously welded tracks, first introduced on train lines, are being used increasingly in Europe. And the different arc welding methods are only used on minor lines, private tracks and in the manufacturing of switches and crossings. Mobile flash butt welding belongs the future in rail welding on side if new tracks have to be erected. The following contribution reviews the processes available, usual test methods for welded rail joints and various applications.
Track-bridge interaction (TBI) problem often arises from the adoption of modern continuously welded rails. Rail expansion devices (REDs) are generally required to release the intensive interaction between long-span bridges and tracks. In their necessity evaluations, the key techniques are the numerical models and methods for obtaining TBI responses. This paper thus aims to propose a preferable model and the associated procedure for TBI analysis to facilitate the designs of long-span bridges as well as the track structures. A novel friction-spring model was first developed to represent the longitudinal resistance features of fasteners with or without vertical wheel loadings, based on resistance experiments for three types of rail fasteners. This model was then utilized in the loading-history-based TBI analysis for an urban rail transit dwarf tower cable-stayed bridge installed with a RED at the middle. The finite element model of the long-span bridge for TBI analysis was established and updated by the bridge's measured natural frequencies. The additional rail stresses calculated from the TBI model under train loadings were compared with the measured ones. Overall agreements were observed between the measured and the computed results, showing that the proposed TBI model and analysis procedure can be used in further study.
The crucial differences between conventional rail with split-type connectors and continuous welded rails are axial stress in the longitudinal direction and stability, as well as other issues generated under the influence of loading effects. Longitudinal stresses generated in continuously welded rails on railway bridges are strongly influenced by the nonlinear behavior of the supporting system comprising sleepers and ballasts. Thus, the track structure interaction cannot be neglected. The rail-support system mentioned above has properties of non-uniform material distribution and uncertainty of construction quality. The linear elastic hypothesis therefore cannot correctly evaluate the stress distribution within the rails. The aim of this study is to apply the nonlinear finite element method using the nonlinear coupling interface between the track and structural model and to illustrate the welded rail behavior under the loading effect and uncertain factors of the ballast. Numerical results of nonlinear finite analysis with a three-dimensional solid and frame element model are presented for a typical track-bridge system. A composite plate girder, modeled by solid and shell elements, is also analyzed to consider the behavior of the welded rail. The analysis result showed buckling under the independent calculations of load cases, including 'temperature change', 'bending of the supporting structure', and 'braking' of the railway vehicle. A parametric study of the load combination method and the loading sequence is also included in this analysis.

Continuous welded rail on bridge structure experiences typically a large amount of additional longitudinal axial forces due to longitudinal track-bridge interaction under temperature and traction/braking load effect. In order to reduce the additional axial forces, special type of fastener, such as ZLR and RLR or rail expansion joint should be applied. Sliding slab track system is known to reduce the effect of track-bridge interaction by the application of a sliding layer between slab track and bridge structure. This study presents track-bridge interaction analysis results of the sliding slab track and compares them with conventional fixed slab track on bridges. The result shows that the sliding slab track can significantly reduce the additional axil forces of the continuously welded rail, and the difference is more significant for long and continuous span bridge.
It was estimated that the anti-vibration measures at the source location of railroad are the most active and effective ones. Among CWR(Continuously Welded Rail), elastic rail fastener, floating slab, ballast mat, under sleeper pad, etc. like these various kinds of measures in the source, under sleeper pad as an anti-vibration measure was constructed at the railroad track supporting structures in the Jeon-la Line. In this study, through the field measurement of vibration at the railroad track supporting structures and nearby the ground, the vibration reduction effect of under sleeper pad were evaluated by insertion loss. As a result, vibration reduction effects were 5.0∼12.5㏈ on the concrete slab of the bridge, 3.9∼7.5㏈ on the ground nearby the bridge respectively.
As the density and height of the buildings nearby subway lines get higher, the unprecedented residents' appeals for noise are on the rise. Furthermore, in accordance with the revision of enforcement regulations on the Noise and Vibration Control Act, the night time noise standards have been reinforced by 5dB effective on January 1st 2010 and the appropriate measures shall be taken accordingly. For the settlement of the public grievances against noise and vibration generated on tracks in at-grade and elevated section, the installation of continuously-welded-rail, rail lubrication system, improved fastening system and higher noise barrier is currently executed. Nevertheless, the noise and vibration levels in some areas are still exceeding the limits required in the regulation. Among the measures, an installation of higher noise barrier or noise tunnel seems to be the most effective way; however, it has limitations owing to the structural stability of existing elevated structures. The paper in consideration of the local conditions and foreign practices discusses the installation of fairing system under the train body as an noise insulation panel in order to reduce the rolling noise and under-carriage noise. Based on the result of this study, a performance verification test during actual train operation is in progress for further study.
To the installed CWR (Continuously Welded Rail) on steel plate girder bridges without ballast, shoes were replaced by the shoe for reduced axial force. During 9 months, from summer to winter, expansion by a temperature on girders, axial forces by a temperature on CWR, etc. are tested and the results are evaluated. Also, with the numerical analysis, the results - axial forces by a temperature on CWR, deformations of girders, etc. are compared and evaluated. From the longitudinal displacement on girders, occurred by run of trains, because of looking for the stability, the bearings for reducing axial forces are applied to the railway bridges. It is verified that the bearings for reducing axial forces disperse the axial forces by a temperature from the measurement of the forces on CWR of plate girder bridges,.
