Effects of Heat Treatment and Rest-inserted Exercise on Muscle Activity

  • Prolonged immobilization leads to significant weakness and atrophy of the skeletal muscle and can also impair the recovery of muscle strength following injury. Therefore, it is important to minimize the period under immobilization and accelerate the return to normal activity. This study examined the effects of combined heat treatment and rest-inserted exercise on the muscle activity of the lower limb during knee flexion/extension. Twelve healthy subjects were assigned to 4 groups that included: (1) heat treatment + rest-inserted exercise; (2) heat treatment + continuous exercise; (3) no heat treatment + rest-inserted exercise; and (4) no heat treatment + continuous exercise. Heat treatment was applied for 15 mins prior to exercise. Continuous exercise groups performed knee flexion/extension at 0.5 Hz for 300 cycles without rest whereas rest-inserted exercise groups performed the same exercise but with 2 mins rest inserted every 60 cycles of continuous exercise. Changes in the rectus femoris and hamstring muscle activities were assessed at 0 and 2 weeks of treatment by measuring the electromyography signals of isokinetic maximum voluntary contraction. Significant increases in both the rectus femoris and hamstring muscles were observed after only 2 weeks of treatment when both heat treatment and rest-inserted exercise were performed. These results suggest that combination of various treatment techniques, such as heat treatment and rest-inserted exercise, may accelerate the recovery of muscle strength following injury or immobilization.

  • Laser heat treatment technology is used for improving the feature of fatigue resistance and wear resistance in mobile parts. The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of laser heat treatment and high frequency heat treatment, which is commonly used in industrial place. For the preemptive experiment, the distribution, depth and size of hardening and its micro-structural features were compared between surface heat treatment case by defocusing and variables of each process for heat treatment by exclusively manufactured heat treatment optical system. As a result, high frequency heat treatment has wide distribution of hardening depth and width about 3 times larger than laser heat treatment, however, its average hardness showed 621.4Hv which is smaller than the average hardness of laser heat treatment with 691Hv.

  • The microstructure changes of the matrix and the graphites were observed by optical microscope and the average hardness number was investigated according to the heat-treatment conditions of the cast iron rods by the horizontal continuous casting process in 35 mm diameter. The three kinds of heat-treatments were introduced. The first treatment was performed at 900, 950, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and the second treatment was conducted during 5, 10, and 15 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$ respectively. The third treatments were the two-cyclic heat-treatment and the three-cyclic heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ during 2 hours. The matrix microstructure of the specimens to be treated at various temperatures for 2 hours was the ferrite to be transformed from the pearlite The hardness number of the center of the samples according to the heat treatment time at $1000^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of the surface area because of the martensite formation in the center. Also, in the cyclic heat-treatments, the hardness number of the two-cycle treatment specimens increased because of the martensite formation in the center.

  • The phase transformation of $REBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (RE=Nd, Gd, Dy) was investigated using isothermal heat-treatment and continuous cooling in air. During continuous cooling, the $REBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (RE=123) superconducting phase with well-distributed $REBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (RE-211) was obtainde at a cooling rate of $0.001^{\circ}C$/s. Single phase RE-123 (Nd, Gd, Dy) was stable at $1050^{\circ}C$, $1050^{\circ}C$, and $950^{\circ}C$ during isothermal heat-treatment, respectively. Above these temperatures the RE-211 phase existed within the RE-123 grains. The RE-123, RE-211, $BaCu_2Od_2$, and CuO phases coexisted at $50^{\circ}C$ below the partial melting temperature for each respective rare-earth RE-123.

  • This study has been performed to predict the transient thermal behavior of the plate in indirectly-fired continuous heat treatment furnace. The temperature profiles in the plate are determined solving the transient one-dimensional heat conduction equations. To verify the validity of the present numerical results, the present results obtained from the transient analysis are compared with those of experiments. Extensive parametric investigations are performed to examine the effects of the emissivities of the plate and refractory, plate thickness and velocity, as well as the gas temperature, on the thermal behavior of the plate.

  • In this study, the heat flow of the plant scale aluminum extrusion process was investigated to establish optimum continuous heat treatment conditions. During the extrusion of 6061 aluminum alloy, processing parameters such as the extrusion pressure, speed and temperature histories of billets were logged as a function of time. The surface temperature of the billets increased at constant ram speed, while it decreased with decreases of the ram speed. In order to maintain the billet temperature within a solutionizing temperature range prior to the succeeding water quenching step, the ram speed or the temperature of the blower should be controlled. The temperature histories of the billets during the extrusion and hot air blowing processes were successfully simulated by using the velocity boundary model in ANSYS CFX. The methodology to design an optimum process by using a commercial simulation program is described in this study on the basis of the metallurgical validation results of the microstructural observation of the extrudates. The developed model allowed the advantages of taking into account the motion of the extrudate coupled with the temperature change based on empirical data. Calculations were made for the extrudate passing through the isothermal chamber maintained at appropriate temperature. It was confirmed that the continuous heat treatment system is beneficial to the productivity enhancement of the commercial aluminum extrusion industry.

Crystallographic and Spectroscopic Characterization of Talc proposed Mineral Carbonation after Heat Treatment (탄산염광물화용 활석의 열처리에 따른 결정학적 분광학적 특성변화)

  • The heat treatment characteristics of natural talc sample was investigated in diverse analytical view point. The mass decrease comes to heat treatment was resulted by the continuous and the discontinuous process and the obtained result show very similar two step profiles with 8.9 % mass decrease. The dehydroxylation of -OH groups contained talc crystal was analyzed by spectroscopic method and the crystallographic variations was also observed after heat treatment. According to XPS result, the magnesium hydroxide($Mg(OH)_2$) of untreated talc powder changed to magnesium oxides(MgO) after heat treatment.
