  • The force transfer mechanism in positive moment continuity details for prestressed concrete girder bridges is investigated in this paper using a three-dimensional detailed finite element model. Positive moment reinforcement in the form of hairpin bars as recommended by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report No 519 is incorporated in the model. The cold construction joint that develops at the interface between girder ends and continuity diaphragms is also simulated via contact elements. The model is then subjected to the positive moment and corresponding shear forces that would develop over the service life of the bridge. The stress distribution in the continuity diaphragm and the axial force distribution in the hairpin bars are presented. It was found that due to the asymmetric configuration of the hairpin bars, asymmetric stress distribution develops at the continuity diaphragm, which can be exacerbated by other asymmetric factors such as skewed bridge configurations. It was also observed that when the joint is subjected to a positive moment, the tensile force is transferred from the girder end to the continuity diaphragm only through the hairpin bars due to the lack of contact between the both members at the construction joint. As a result, the stress distribution at girder ends was found to be concentrated around the hairpin bars influence area, rather than be resisted by the entire girder composite section. Finally, the results are used to develop an approach for estimating the cracking moment capacity at girder ends based on a proposed effective moment of inertia.

  • The companion paper presents an analytical model to predict behaviors of PSC-Beam bridges according to continuity of spans. This paper aims at providing several examples of its application to PSC-Beam bridge. In this regard, many uncertainties affecting to the continuity of spans (such as the ultimate shrinkage strain of slab and girders, the prestressing creep of girders, and the time adopting prestressing force) are analysis in detail. Moreover, to increase the serviceability and to remove th inherent structural defects including the cracking at interior supports, a necessity for the parametric studies of PSC-Beam bridges reflecting the construction sequence is emphasized.

  • The NGN should support an ubiquitous environment in which users can use multiple devices. Especially, services should be provided to users in a seamless manner across multiple devices which are dynamically found in users' vicinity. Therefore, supporting service continuity is essential in the NGN. Currently the IMS, which is a session control layer for the NGN, deals with session control procedures in detail for service continuity. However, the IMS provides limited methods how users can find target terminals for transferring the session. The target terminals tend to be located near in user's physical location, and could be shared among different users. For providing better service experience in the NGN, The NGN needs to encompass methods to enable for users to use the dynamically-found terminals in users' vicinity seamlessly. In this paper, we introduce a novel registration method based on virtual ISIM by which the target terminals in user's vicinity can register themselves to the IMS, and also we discuss how service continuity is supported.

  • The modular technology has been already applied in automotive industry, plant and shipbuilding industry. Recently, the modular technology was applied in bridge construction. The modular bridge is different from the existing precast bridges in terms of standardized design that the detailed design of members is omitted by using the standard modules; the design of the modular bridge is completed by only assembling the standard modules without design in member level. The girder-type precast modular bridge has been developed as a simply supported bridge. The girder-type precast modular bridge could be applied to the multi-span bridges through the continuity method. The continuity of the girder-type precast modular bridge is achieved by using the link slab which is easy to construction and appropriate to the rapid construction. The link slabs have been used as the type of reinforced concrete structure in US from the 1950's. In 2000's, the link slab using the engineered cementitious concrete (ECC link slab) has been developed. In this study, the RC type link slab which is more reproducible and economic relative to the ECC link slab was used for the continuity of the girder-type precast modular bridges, and the construction detail of RC type link slab was modified. In addition, the modified iterative design method of RC type link slab was proposed in this study. To verify the proposed design method, the flexural tests were conducted using the RC type link slab specimens. Also, the fatigue test using the mock-up specimen was conducted with cyclic loading condition up to two million cycles.

  • The injection molding process is used in the fabrication of a large variety of plastic articles. A numerical simulation of the filling stage along the thickness direction is proposed by combining the free surface boundary condition with the relevant governing equations. The mathematical model is based on the equations of continuity, momentum and energy along with inelastic power-law model and relevant boundary conditions. Due to the significant implications for microstructure development in the pro duct, the fountain effect at the advancing free surface is explicitly taken into consideration in the simulation. The model yields data on free surface shape as well as velocity, pressure, temperature and shear stress distributions within the mold cavity. The rearrangement of the velocity and temperature profiles in the vicinity of the melt front is considered in detail.

  • A case of complete interruption of aortic arch with aortopulmonary window, patent ductus arteriosus, and aberrantly originated right subclavian artery from proximal descending aorta, in a four year old boy is reported in detail. This is the only reported case in Korea, who has had a successful one-stage total anatomical correction of this combination of defects. Under deep hypothermia and total circulatory arrest, aortic continuity was established using patent ductus arteriosus and anterior wall of pulmonary artery, which was anastomosed obliquely to anteromedial side of ascending aorta. Aortopulmonary window was closed using Impra patch via pulmonary arteriotomy. Then pulmonary arteriotomy was reconstructed primarily except at the junction of right pulmonary artery and main pulmonary artery, where a small piece of pericardium was used to close the defect to prevent kinking and narrowing of right pulmonary artery. Postoperative cardiac catheterization demonstrated a good reconstruction.

  • An efficient domain/boundary decomposition method is applied for heat transfer problems with non-linear thermal radiation boundaries. The whole domain of solids or structures is considered as set of subdomains, an interface, and radiation interfaces. In a variational formulation, simple penalty functions are introduced to connect an interface or radiation interfaces with neighboring subdomains that satisfy continuity conditions. As a result, non-linear finite element computations due to the thermal radiation boundaries can be localized within a few subdomains or radiation interfaces. Therefore, by setting up suitable solution algorithms for the governing finite element equations, the computational efficiency can be improved considerably. Through a set of numerical examples, these distinguishing characteristics of the present method are investigated in detail.
