This paper presents a study of soil-structure interaction problems using infinite elements. The infinite elements are formulated for homogeneous and layered soil media, based on approximate expressions for three components of propagating waves, namely the Rayleigh, compressive and shear waves. The integration scheme which was proposed for problems with single wave component by waves. The integration scheme which was proposed for problems with single wave component by Zenkiewicz is expanded to the multi-waves problem. Verifications are carried out on rigid circular footings which are placed on and embedded in elastic half space. Numerical analysis is performed for a containment structure of a nuclear power plant subjected to a horizontal seismic excitation.

This paper presents a seismic analysis technique for a 3D soil-structure interaction system in a frequency domain, based on the finite element formulation incorporating frequency-dependent infinite elements for the far field soil region. Earthquake input motions are regarded as traveling P, SV and SH waves which are incident vertically from the far-field soil region, and then equivalent earthquake forces are calculated using impedances of infinite soil by dynamic infinite elements and traction and displacement from free field response analysis. For verification and application, seismic response analyses are carried out for a multi-layered soil medium without structure and a typical nuclear power plant in consideration of soil-structure interaction. The results are compared with the free field response using a one-dimensional analytic solution, and a dynamic response of an example structure from another SSI package.
In general steel sheet piles are used in the containment system, which are vertical barrier systems for waste disposal and landfill purposes, and roads in excavation for temporary structure. This paper presents case study of the use of an interlocking sheet pile for water and containment. Cut-off Z-type sheet pile joints are investigated to determine their permeability from the field test. Four different joint sealing materials are used in field test. The results showed joint permeability is significant time-dependent and joint-dependent. These are explored and conclusions on permeability characteristics of different sealants are noted. A case study gives a design example as well as suggestion on permeability and water tightness can be implemented in using the sheet pile barrier in civil and environment works. From the test results, the effective sealing programs of sheet pile interlocks are suggested.

In this paper, a probability-based reliability analysis was proposed based on a finite element method-based random vibration analysis and serviceability limit state of structures. The limit state model defined for the study is a serviceability limit state in terms of the more realistic crack failure that might cause the emission of radioactive materials. The SAP V-2 is used for a three-dimensional finite element analysis of concrete containment structure, and the reliability analysis is carried out by modifying HRAS reliability analysis program for this study. In this study, the load factors for the design of reinforced concrete cointainment structures in Korea are proposed by considering appropriate load combination criteria for design, and the results are compared with the present ASME code. The proposed load factors were proved to be in accordance with a set of code performance objective and showed consistency in the limit state probability.
Logistics is in the limelight as one of a variety of RFID applications. The RFID technology is actively being applied to improve the competitiveness power of companies through the synthetic management of products and information. The RFID system generates large volume of stream data. It has problems which occur waste of storage and long processing time when storing large data and processing queries. Recently, many studies have been done to solve the problems which are generated in RFID system. In this thesis, we propose an efficient data management scheme for path queries and containment queries which are occurred frequently. The proposed data management scheme considers a change of the containment of products during a transport and supports a path of changed products by representing a path of various containments. Also, the compression utilizing the structure of supply chain reduces the stored data volumes. In order to show the superiority of our approach, we compare it with the existing schemes. As a result, our experimental results show that our scheme outperforms the existing scheme in terms of storage efficiency and query processing time.

In this paper, experiment of thermal conductivity among thermal properties for CCS insulation material was carried out under the condition ranged from room temperature to cryogenic temperature. CCS insulation system should be sustained under cryogenic temperature($-163^{\circ}C$), and lots of investigations will be conducted how to block the heat to insulation material. CCS components which consist of various materials are especially the main interests, and how the temperature of the entire CCS along the location is should be investigated through these studies. With the experimental thermal properties, the steady state thermal analysis of the entire cargo system was conducted. When the LNG leaked through the insulation system with external impact, temperature distribution and thermal safety of secondary barrier, especially plywood and hull structure, was observed.

In this study, we developed a methodology to determine the reference parameter for an aircraft impact induced risk assessment of nuclear power plant (NPP) using finite element impact analysis of containment building. The target structure used to develop the method of reference parameter selection is one of the typical Korean PWR type containment buildings. We composed a three-dimensional finite element model of the containment building. The concrete damaged plasticity model was used for the concrete material model. The steels in the tendon, rebar, and liner were modeled using the piecewise-linear stress-strain curves. To evaluate the correlations between structural response and each candidate parameter, we developed Riera's aircraft impact force-time history function with respect to the variation of the loading parameters, i.e., impact velocity and mass of the remaining fuel. For each force-time history, the type of aircraft is assumed to be a Boeing 767 model. The variation ranges of the impact velocity and remaining fuel percentage are 50 to 200m/s, and 30 to 90%, respectively. Four parameters, i.e., kinetic energy, total impulse, maximum impulse, and maximum force are proposed for candidates of the reference parameter. The wellness of the correlation between the reference parameter and structural responses was formulated using the coefficient of determination ($R^2$). From the results, we found that the maximum force showed the highest $R^2$ value in most responses in the materials. The simplicity and intuitiveness of the maximum force parameter are also remarkable compared to the other candidate parameters. Therefore, it can be concluded that the maximum force is the most proper candidate for the reference parameter to assess the aircraft impact induced risk of NPPs.

When liquefied natural gas (LNG) is stored in a tank, it is necessary to maintain low temperature. It is very important that insulation techniques are applied to the LNG cargo because of this extreme environment. Hence, laminated wood, especially plywood, is widely used as the structural member and insulation material in LNG cargo containment systems (CCS). However, fracture of plywood has been reported recently, owing to sloshing effect. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the strength of the structural member for solving the problem. In this study, compressed wood, which is used as a support in LNG independent type B tanks, was considered as a substitute for plywood. Compression and bending tests were performed on compressed wood under ambient and cryogenic temperatures to estimate the mechanical behaviors and fracture characteristics. In addition, the direction normal to the laminates surface was considered as an experimental variable. Finally, the feasibility of using compressed wood for an LNG CCS was evaluated from the test results.

To improve the productivity of cargo containment construction for a membrane LNG carrier, it is important to shorten the installation period and process of the scaffolding system, which is a construction workbench of a cargo containment for a membrane LNG carrier. As an effective method, opinions are being gathered to enlarge the lifting unit from the existing two stages to eight stages. On the other hand, the stresses around the pin and hole will increase significantly because of the increase in lifting load according to the large size of the module. The purpose of this study was to establish a new large module-lifting plan by introducing TRIZ to solve these problems. This study adopted a method to utilize 40 inventive principles, which is one of the various problem-solving tools of TRIZ. First, technical contradictions were derived, the engineering parameters were selected. Second, efficient inventive principles were selected to overcome the technical contradictions using a contradiction matrix. Finally, the general and specific solutions were derived through the selected inventive principle, and structural analysis confirmed that the stress generated in the structure was low. The utility of TRIZ was confirmed by the successful lifting of large modules using the established lifting method.
