As the excessive competition between container terminals has been deepening, not only productivity, but also cost economic of the terminals has been raised. With regard to this, the competitiveness of the terminals is limited because of inefficiency operation of transfer crane(T/C) which needs large amount of energy consumption. Therefore, it is possible that the improvement in the T/C operation leads to saving cost for resources and energy as well as increasing the productivity of the terminals. This study provides 'the K-Means Clustering based Optimized Decision Model for Transfer Crane Operation', referring to 'RFID & RTLS based Port Logistics Initiative' of Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs and estimates the efficiency through simulating.

A design method of the network for automated transporters mounted on rails is addressed for automated container terminals. In the network design, the flow directions of some path segments as well as routes of transporters for each flow requirement must be determined, while the total transportation and waiting times are minimized. This study considers, for the design of the network, the waiting times of the transporters during the travel on path segments, intersections, transfer points below the quay crane (QC), and transfer points at the storage yard. An algorithm, which is the combination of a modified Dijkstra's algorithm for finding the shortest time path and a queuing theory for calculating the waiting times during the travel, is proposed. The proposed algorithm can solve the problem in a short time, which can be used in practice. Numerical experiments showed that the proposed algorithm gives solutions better than several simple rules. It was also shown that the proposed algorithm provides satisfactory solutions in a reasonable time with only average 7.22% gap in its travel time from those by a genetic algorithm which needs too long computational time. The performance of the algorithm is tested and analyzed for various parameters.
Recently according to increase of enlarged scale ports in conformity with increase in over size vessels and container handling service, pollutants generated from ports are increasing. In advanced countries, reduction in carbon dioxide emission assigned to them has been implemented according to the Climate Change Convention and Kyoto Protocol from 2008 to 2012 in order to lessen carbon dioxide emission. Henceforth increase in discussion on the measure of constructing Green Port and low-carbon port is expected in our nation's field of port as well, it is considered that the effort in reduction with regard to undesirable output which causes environmental problem of analysis target during measuring effectiveness. Therefore, in this study, effectiveness was estimated through directional technology distance function considering undesirable output differently from effectiveness analysis of existing container terminal, and then performed comparative analysis with the result analyzed with BCC output-oriented model. As the result of analysis, in 2007 DMU3 and DMU5, and in 2010 DMU2 and DMU4 appeared to be efficient terminals in BCC output oriented model, and in directional technology distance function model, DMU1, DMU3 in 2007, DMU3, DMU5 in 2008, DMU7 in 2009, and DMU2, DMU5 in 2010 appeared to be efficient terminals.

Increasing port competition driven by the containerisation has motivated ports and terminals to focus on their performance to efficiently utilise the available resources and to make strategic decisions in port development and expansion. With both inter-port andintra-port competition increasing in the port of Colombo, this study aims to measure the efficiency of the container terminals in Colombo comparing to terminals in the port of Busan using the DEA window analysis to determine their operational efficiency and to provide suggestions for future port development activities. Multiple window analyses were conducted using CCR and BCC models with different orientations and window lengths to compare the efficiencies of 11 DMUs in both ports during the period from 2015-2019 to measure the efficiencies prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results revealed the largest terminal operator, PNC in Busan, to be the most efficient overall, while the second highest efficiency was recorded by one of the smallest terminal operators, SAGT in Colombo, among the sample. Although use of DEA in port performance measurement has been popular for many years, efficiency measurements in the port of Colombo, the main hub port in the South Asian region, has not been comprehensively studied so far.
This paper focuses on measuring the efficiency of container yards in container terminals in Busan and Gwangyang using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach. It analyses the relative efficiency of 11 container terminals based on the data for the period between 2006 and 2009 to offer a fresh perspective. The applied framework assumes inputs to be container cranes, transtainer cranes and yard tractors and output as container transshipment volume. Through the analysis, the differences between the impact of using of container cranes, transtainer cranes and yard tractors, top handler & reach stacker on container yard efficiency are measured. Moreover, the associations between the three input factors are analyzed as well. This paper also employs heteroscedastic Tobit model to show the impact of explanatory variables on container yard efficiencies. I took into consideration the strategies for operation of container cranes, transtainer cranes and yard tractors in container yard.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of new operation system for port container terminals. We assumed that the operation system of container terminal consists of monitorig & control system, operation system, planning system, and information technology, and we selected total 19 technology alternatives. Through the results of questionnaire and interview received from field expert, we established the evaluation model and analyze the productivity improvement by estimating the weight and the priority of productivity for operation system. From the developed model, we provide useful implications to introduce new technologies of operation system for domestic container terminals.

Automated Container Terminals have been being developed over the world for many recent years and more and more countries get interested in it because the amount of containers exported or imported is steeply increasing. Existed Container Terminals were not designed to control this kind of heavily many containers. They would face many structural problems soon or later, although they have managed to do well until now. One of the most important things in developing Automated Container Terminal is to develop the equipment able to transfer the awfully many containers. Those are maybe Automated Transfer Cranes, Automated Guided Vehicles, and Automated Quay-Side Cranes. The word "Automated" means the equipment is operated without drivers and those equipments are able to work without taking any break. Through the researches on the existed transfer cranes, authors decided that the structure of existed transfer cranes is not proper to swift and fast transfer and it′s not impossible to handle so many containers in limited time. Therefore authors have been studying on the proper structure of the Automated Container Crane for past several years and a new type of transfer crane has been developed. Design concepts and control methods of a new crane will be introduced in this paper.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the expected effectiveness of new operation system for port container terminals. We assumed that the operation system of container terminal consists of monitoring & control system, operation system, planning system, and information technology, and we selected total 19 technology alternatives. Through the results of questionnaire and interview received from field expert, we established the evaluation model and analyzed the productivity improvement by estimating the weight and the priority of productivity for operation system From the developed model, we provide useful implications to introduce new technologies of operation system for domestic container terminals.
This paper aims at identifying the effectiveness of the maintenance of container cranes in two typical container terminals in Pusan Port based on the empirical data For this the key performance indicator (KPI) was introduced with some information on world class standard level. Then, an empirical analysis was conducted with respect to the interaction of equipment maintenance KPI such as MMBF, PM, EM, and Breakdown ratio.
As competition increases among ports, new marketing strategies and differentiated means in addition to the existing core services are needed to prevent existing container shipping companies from escaping and to attract new customers. The additional services and reward programs are investigated. How these variables affect relational commitment in terms of customer retention is examined. Customers of the container terminals are examined in terms of psychological behavior. This study presents the structural equation model that shows the connection among benefits, rewards, switching costs and relational commitment. The empirical analysis is done with the subject of the container terminal users and the implications are derived.
