A Simulation Study on Efficiency of Container Crane in Container Terminal (컨테이너 터미널에서 컨테이너 크레인의 하역능력 추정에 관한 시뮬레이션 연구)

  • This paper describes the simulation study which estimates the container crane efficiency in container terminal. In most simulation studies, it is assumed that container cranes are available at any time. Though the failures of container cranes don't occur often, they are very serious problems on terminal efficiency. As usual, the failures of container crane cause arrived ships to delay the departure time. In this study, a queueing simulation model for container terminal, which focuses on the failures of container cranes, is designed. The simulation approach appears to be the most appropriate one because it allows to avoid the usual exponential assumption on interarrivals of ships and service times of container cranes. Using the developed model, we tested the efficiency of container cranes considering failures with a real system size and performed the simulation experiment on real container terminal to validate the developed simulation model. The results of simulation experiment were analyzed using output statistics, which include the waiting times of vessels and yard tractors, the utilization for container cranes, and the berth occupancy rates.

  • The management of liner shipping company is an extremely complex activities, especially if a company aims to simultaneously optimize the cost and service of the company's operations in a competitive environment. This paper investigates the control process of containers in a typical container liner shipping and proposes day by day operational model for empty container control in the maritime container transportation system. We proposed a linear programming model for empty container control in container liner shipping and the computational results show utilities of the model.

  • In this paper, we deal with an allocation model of vertical type container yard for minimizing the total ATC (Automated Transfer Crane) working time and the equivalence of ATC working load in each block on automated container terminal. Firstly, a layout of automated container terminal yard is shown The characteristic of equipment which work in the terminal and its basic assumption are given Next, an allocation model which concerns with minimizing the total working time and the equivalence of working load is proposed for effectiveness of ATC working in automated container terminal. Also, a weight values on critical function are suggested to adjust the critical values by evaluating the obtained allocation plan. For ATC allocation algorithm, we suggest a simple repeat algorithm for on-line terminal operation.

  • The fuzzy control theory is applied to control a container crane, which is a very complicated system and controled manually by experts. As reference velocities of trolley and hoist of the container crane, we use those decided by experts, and express them by fuzzy model.   • The container port industry has been variously studied by many researchers, because the contemporary container transportation and container port industries play a pivotal role in globalization of the world economy. For container terminals, the productivity, affected by many factors, is an important target in measuring container terminal performance. Under this background, finding the critical factors affecting the productivity is necessary. Regression analysis can be used to identify which independent variables are related to the dependent variable, and explore the relationships of them. The aim of paper is to evaluate the factors affecting the productivity of Chinese major terminals by using a regression statistical analysis modeling approach, which is to establish the variable preprocessing model (VPM) and regression analysis model (RAM), by means of collecting the major Chinese container terminals data in the year of 2008.

  • The main activities of container terminals are to load container freights to vessels, discharge them from vessels, and store them in the storage yard. Container terminals make many operational plans to execute these functions effectively. If the plans do not consider enough the loads of related resources, they may have low actualities. This study discusses the optimal yard planning model which considers various resources, such as the storage yard, yard cranes, internal vehicles, and travel lanes, in container terminals. The model determines the groups and amounts of containers which are stored in each storage block by using the resource profile. The yard planning problem is represented to the multi-commodity minimal cost flow problem and is formulated to the linear programming model. In order to explain the application of the mathematical model, the numerical examples are presented. Additionally, the relationship between the average load ratio and the relocation ratio is discussed.

  • Recently, the efficient planning and operations of container terminals have become essential problems to develop the evaluation method with operational rules. Container terminals are required to have enough berths and container yards as well as various equipments and facilities, but in reality there are many differences in their resources owing to the circumstances of each terminal. This study introduces a simulation model for evaluating various operation rules for improving the performance of transshipment container terminal operations. This model can analysis various factors (throughputs, utilizations etc) and shows operational alternative considering design factors of transshipment container terminal with the related circumstances.

  • In recent years, the transportation sector has been undergoing very rapid and multifarious changes due to the M&A, alliances between shipping companies, introduction of larger container ship as it cost reduction measure and the application of integrated logistics to satisfy the needs of customers. Therefore, container terminal is required adequate terminal facilities, sufficient channel depth, efficient handling and low cost of port fees and dues. The purpose of this paper is for functional assessment of efficient container terminal. Firstly, the container operating process information about yard equipment and chassis is extracted through the analysis of practical daily work report of container terminal. Also, the formulae of skill factor and troubles of operator on transfer crane are defined. Lastly, container handling simulation model which consideration of skill factor and trouble of operator is proposed by Petri network model.

  • This paper deals with the development of the generalized model to assist the empty container repositioning and leasing problems for liner shipping companies. For this, the existing models have been reviewed. And then a mathematical model has been proposed to handle the specific characteristics of the empty container management; the dynamic characteristics, the multi echelon of the transportation and distribution systems, and the substitutions among various container types. In particular, this paper puts an emphasis on the modeling framework for considering substitutions among various container types.
