  • The pick cutter, which directly contacts and crushes the rock, is the expendable part of a roadheader. The arrangement and angle of attachment of the pick cutter are important factors that determine excavator performance. It is necessary to numerically calculate the contact between the pick cutter and rock. The rock is defined as a set of particles using the discrete element method. The parallel bond model is used to define the bonds between particles. The properties of granite that are measured by the uniaxial compressive test are applied to the numerical rock model. The pick cutter is defined by the polygon elements. The linear cutting simulation is considered to simulate the contact between the pick cutter and rock. The results of the simulation show the rock breaking due to contact with the pick cutter.

  • Since the modified membrane element has the same external appearance as the ordinary membrane element, it is not able to apply the thickness variation of sheet metal in the blank holder to the contact treatment and the equally distributed blank holding force should be inevitably imposed on sheet metal along the periphery regardless of the contact status. But sheet metal does not contact with the blank holder at the periphery, nor the blank holding force is distributed uniformly along the boundary. To impose the blank holding force properly, the scheme is improved so that the blank holding force at each node imposed on sheet metal is dependent on the calculated thickness derivation and a state of equilibrium with the total blank holding force. The validity of the improved scheme is demonstrated with the simulation of cylindrical and rectangular cup deep drawing.

  • Adherence between reinforcement and the surrounding concrete is usually ignored in finite element analysis (FEA) of reinforced concrete (RC) members. However, load transition between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete effects RC members' behavior a great deal. In this study, the effects of bond-slip on the FEA of RC members are examined. In the analyses, three types of bond-slip modeling methods (perfect bond, contact elements and spring elements) and three types of reinforcement modeling methods (smeared, one dimensional line and three dimensional solid elements) were used. Bond-slip behavior between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete was simulated with cohesive zone materials (CZM) for the first time. The bond-slip relationship was identified experimentally using a beam bending test as suggested by RILEM. The results obtained from FEA were compared with the results of four RC beams that were tested experimentally. Results showed that, in FE analyses, because of the perfect bond occurrence between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete, unrealistic strains occurred in the longitudinal reinforcement. This situation greatly affected the load deflection relationship because the longitudinal reinforcements dominated the failure mode. In addition to the spring elements, the combination of a bonded contact option with CZM also gave closer results to the experimental models. However, modeling of the bond-slip relationship with a contact element was quite difficult and time consuming. Therefore bond-slip modeling is more suitable with spring elements.

  • In this study, the problem of discontinuous contact in two functionally graded (FG) layers resting on a rigid plane and loaded by two rigid blocks is solved by the finite element method (FEM). Separate analyzes are made for the cases where the top surfaces of the problem layers are metal, the bottom surfaces are ceramic and the top surfaces are ceramic and the bottom surfaces are metal. For the problem, it is accepted that all surfaces are frictionless. A two-dimensional FEM analysis of the problem is made by using a special macro added to the ANSYS package program The solution of this study, which has no analytical solution in the literature, is given with FEM. Analyzes are made by loading different Q and P loads on the blocks. The normal stress (σy) distributions at the interfaces of FG layers and between the substrate and the rigid plane interface are obtained. In addition, the starting and ending points of the separations between these surfaces are determined. The normal stresses (σx, σy) and shear stresses (τxy) at the point of separation are obtained along the depth. The results obtained are shown in graphics and tables. With this method, effective results are obtained in a very short time. In addition, analytically complex and long problems can be solved with this method.

  • In this paper, the contact stress and strain distributions in elastomer O-ring seals have been analyzed using a non-linear finite element method. The stress behavior of PTFE materials is assumed as Odgen model because the sealing clearance between the flange and the surface of the O-ring is not small and the sealing pressure of working fluids covers from the atmospheric pressure to high pressure of 15MPa. The contact normal force and stress in wavy O-rings in which is developed for this analysis are uniformly distributed along the flange and the wall of the rectangular groove. And the normal sealing forces are also kept high compared to other contact sealing models such as the conventional O-ring and X-ring, Thus, the FEM computed results indicate that the sealing characteristic of wavy O-rings is food compared with other contact seals.

  • The purpose of the study is to find development of contact area, contact pressure and friction forces occurring at joints or connection areas inbetween structural members or mechanical parts. The problem has a pair of difficulties intrinsically; a constraint of displacement due to contact, and presence of work term by nonconservative friction force in the variational principle of the problem. Because of these difficulties, the variational principle remains in the form of inequality. It is resolved by penalty method and perturbation method making the inequality to an equality which is proper for computational purposes. A contact problem without friction is solved to find contact area and contact pressure, which are to be used as data for the analysis of the friction problem using perturbed variational principle. For numerical experiments, a Hertz problem, a rigid punch problem, and the latter one with friction effects are solved using $Q_2$-finite elements.

  • The traveling wave ultra-sonic motor (TWUSM) is operated through the frictional force between the rotor and the stator. Hence, the contact mechanism should be analyzed to estimate the motor performance. However, the nonlinearity of the contact mechanism of the TWUSM makes it difficult to propose a proper contact model and a characteristic analysis method. To address these problems, a novel contact model is proposed and be termed the cylindrical dynamic contact model (CDCM) in this research. An estimation method of the motor performance is proposed using the CDCM, an analytical method, and a numerical method. The feasibility and usefulness of the proposed characteristic analysis are verified through experimental data.

  • It is very difficult to analyze the dynamic characteristic because railway vehicle is a very complex system which are connected various mass element with railway vehicle system. To realize and analyze actual phenomenon has restriction that usual commercial software calculates creep force under creep theory about wheel-rail contact mechanism as basic analyzing, and approach about contact point are based on two dimensional non-linear contact theory and simplified Hertzian contact which considers just displacement change on the YZ plain. Therefore, to solve these problems there should be a new approach difference with existing one. In this research, a new algorithm for finding wheel-rail contact position, calculation method of contact force and applied force will be presented.

  • Recently, PM-high speed steel(PM-HSS) has reportedly been a good alternative material for rolling mill because of its superior peformance to conventional HSS. This paper has been aimed to investigate the possibility for application to rolling contact element for PM-HSS by X-ray diffraction technique. The X-ray elastic constant for PM-HSS has been found by X-ray diffraction during the four-point bending test. Residual stress and half-value breadth on the contact surface during rolling contact fatigue process by X-ray diffraction have also been measured. The result of this study shows that the application of X-ray diffraction technique to PM-HSS could be as possible alternative material as conventional HSS. Half-value breadth on rolling contact surface by X-ray diffraction is not changed during rolling contact fatigue process. On the other hand, the residual stress is changed. This suggests that dislocation reaction has been hardly occurred in rolling contact, depending on supersaturated carbon in PM-HSS.
