This study utilized representative data and categorized consumer groups by the style of purchase behavior, and examined the differences in consumers' evaluation for their consumption life and socio-demographic variables. The results of this study are summarized below First, the level of satisfaction for consumption life and evaluation of consumption level were in medium. The evaluation for society's consumption behavior was negative and did not agree that consumers' own behaviors are rational, but others' are conspicuous. The trend of consumers' conspicuous behavior and fashion-focused behavior were severe, but consumers' rationality was low. Second, males were more likely to be in rationality, but females were in both rationality and fashion-focused behaviors. Single consumers were more likely to follow fashion-based behavior, but married consumers prefer name-brand products and more likely to show conspicuous consumption. Low education was more related with convenience-focused behavior and rationality, but high education was more related with fashion-focused behavior and irrationality. Young consumers were more likely to show fashion-focused behavior, but old consumers follow convenience-focused behavior. Third, the level of satisfaction for consumption life was the highest in rational consumers, but low in consumers focused on name-brand products and on conspicuous consumption. The evaluation of consumption level was low in rational consumers and consumers focused on convenience, but high in consumers focused on name-brand products and on fashion. Rational consumers were more likely to evaluate society's consumption behavior negatively, and consumers focused on convenience were more likely to disagree for the discrepance in the evaluation of consumption behavior between consumers themselves and others.

This study was undertaken to provide basic data to aid product development and marketing by identifying purchasing behaviors and performing Important Performance Analysis (IPA) according to the consumption values of rice cakes. This study was conducted on 426 consumers who purchased rice cakes. Analysis was performed to determine general characteristics, consumption behaviors, preference for rice cakes, material preferences for rice cake development, need for rice cake development, and importance and satisfaction when selecting rice cakes. Cluster analysis classified consumption values into three clusters. The high and middle consumption value groups contained the greatest proportions of consumers aged over fifty. The high and medium consumption value groups preferred rice cakes more than the low consumption value group. Higher rice cake consumption value was positively associated with the greater preference for rice cakes. Furthermore, the perceived need to develop rice cakes was greatest in the high consumption value group. In addition, importance and satisfaction were positively associated with consumption value. IPA analysis showed that the attributes that require continuous attention because of their contributions to importance and satisfaction were taste, quantity, and hygiene. Different rice cake marketing and product development strategies are required for different consumption values.
In this study, we tried to understand preschooler clothing trends and identify the purchase behaviors of various consumers, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents, who are the main consumers of the preschooler clothing market. We conducted in-depth interviews with consumers who were interested in preschooler clothing, purchased it frequently, and bought preschooler clothing within the last three months. Their purchase motivations and purchase behaviors were analyzed through exploratory and inductive analysis. The analysis was conducted by integrating categories into one process centered on core categories through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The results of this study included that 1) a variety of clothing purchase behaviors appeared as a central phenomenon, 2) the causal conditions that contributed to this phenomenon were the buyers' childcare experiences, purchase experiences, the personal consumption values of individuals, and income levels, 3) in response to the central phenomenon, the parents' action/interaction strategies were acceptance and rejection of purchased clothing, 4) contextual and Intervening conditions affecting action/interaction strategy were family environment changes, the VIB (Very Important Baby) phenomenon, parents' clothing involvement, and the relationship with the buyers, and acceptance by the users, and 5) as a result of the strategy expressed as acceptance and rejection, various clothing behaviors emerged. In this study, we identified that there are various influencers, apart from parents, involved in children's clothing consumption. Therefore, we need to keep in mind that various purchase behaviors and clothing trends that appear during one's childhood may affect the individual's clothing behavior in the future.
This study investigated whether there was a difference in off-line consumption behavior on and off-line. Online surveys were conducted on 218 people aged 20 to 59 who live in the country actively using Instagram, and the results of analysis through technical statistical analysis, logistic regression analysis, and linear regression analysis are as follows. There are some differences in the consumption items and expenditures of showing consumption behavior on Instagram and showing consumption in real space. In addition, there were different factors influencing the behavior of showing off in Instagram and the factors affecting the showing of consumption in real space. Age, education, and narcissism have an effect on show off behavior in Instagram, whereas age, materialism, and narcissism have been identified as factors influencing in real space. Whether on Instagram or in the real space, the positive emotions felt by consumers after showing off consumption had a statistically significant effect on consumer happiness. This study has significance in that it has empirically verified the difference between Instagram and actual consumption behaviors, and sought the direction of healthy consumption behaviors for consumer happiness.
This study sought to compare intake levels of major dish items and food groups between normal and obese Korean children in order to understand obesity-related eating behaviors. The study was also conducted to apply the information on the differences in major dish items and food groups found in this study to development of a brief food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for children's obesity-related eating behaviors. Finally, the developed FFQ was evaluated for reliability. A total of 290, 24-hour dietary recall data from 9-11 year-old normal or obese participants in the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were reviewed to identity dish items and food groups showing outstanding differences between the normal and obese groups. Based on the level of intake amount between the two groups, a total of 7 items, including ddeokbokggi, spaghetti, ham roast, pork cutlet, dairy products & ices, kimchi, and fruits, were selected to be included in the FFQ. The former 5 items were seen to be consumed more in the obese group, while the latter 2 items were so in the normal group. The questionnaire was formatted into a frequency response section of a seven-category option and reference period of the last 7 days. Test-retest reliability of the developed FFQ was examined by administering it to 153, 9-11 year-old children at a public elementary school in Seoul twice at a month interval. The level of reliability was found to be reasonably high. In conclusion, this study suggests that high consumption of several high-calorie dish items and low consumption of kimchi and fruits may be important eating behaviors in relation to obesity risk among 9-11 year-old children who need nutrition educators' attention. The current study also implies that a simple FFQ can be utilized to reliably assess 9-11 year-old children's diets.
Consumer researchers found that compulsive buying was a part of a category of compulsive consumption that was interrelated to addictive and repetitive behaviors. The present study empirically examined the co-morbidity of compulsive buying and Internet addiction among e-commerce users in terms of consumption disorders. Although the prevalence of Internet use and on-line sales remarkably increase in recent years, almost no study examines on-line compulsive buying behavior. This study explored the link between compulsive buying and Internet addiction among e-commerce users, and investigated the characteristics of on-line shoppers with respect to two forms of compulsive consumption, which were divided into compulsive buying and Internet addiction. Additionally, factors that related to compulsive buying behaviors among e-commerce users were also examined. The present research was conducted using a convenience sample of 394 young adults between the ages of 20-30, and the Faber and O'Guinn's DSCB scale and the Widyanto's Internet addiction scale (IA) were used. Confirmatory factor analyses were utilized to evaluate the structure of the DSCB and IA, and a Probit model was used to examine determinants for the compulsive buying behaviors of e-commerce users. E-commerce users were classified into four groups; high compulsion and high addiction, low compulsion and low addiction, high compulsion and low addiction, and low compulsion and high addiction. Consumers with high compulsion and high addiction spent higher amounts of money on their on-line purchases and were frequently connected with the Internet compared to the three other consumer groups. Consumers with compulsive buying behaviors were also found to have significantly greater Internet addiction tendencies than typical buyers. Compulsive buyers were more likely to engage in Internet addiction and the number of purchasing via on-line shopping mall, and had higher materialism. Policy implications and suggestions for consumer education programs were discussed.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the conspicuous consumption propensity of middle schoolers and to develop effective consumer education programs which help improve consumer socialization. Empirical data were collected by using a questionnaire for 500 middle schoolers who reside in the city of Daegu. The results of this study are as follows: First, significant differences in materialistic propensity can be found. It results from the difference in parents' educational background, amount of monthly pocket money, influence of mass media and friends, and the consumer education hosted by schools. Second, significant differences in the conspicuous consumption propensity can be found. It comes from the difference in materialistic propensity and control of purchasing behaviors. Third, the variables affecting the middle schoolers' propensity of conspicuous consumption include influence of mass media and friends, control of purchasing behaviors, influence of materialistic propensity, amount of monthly pocket money, and mother's educational background. Lastly, this study helps develop consumer education programs for the teenagers. The program should use statistics data, Internet, presentation materials, putting higher priority on experience activities, survey, analysis, discussion, and presentation rather than theoretical education.
For the purpose of carbon mitigation, Korea needs to introduce stronger market-based economic incentives to promote environmentally-friendly behaviors of consumers. In particular, the government could consider introducing tax benefits on income taxation for green consumption, as well as public education and campaign, to stimulate environmentally-friendly consumption behaviors. In this respect, using an analysis of Input-Output and Household Income and Expenditure Survey in Korea, this paper designs four major scenarios related to income tax benefits for green consumption, and then explores the economy-wide effects of those proposed policies.
This study attempted to identify differences in Korean food consumption behaviors between groups of Japanese consumers segmented in accordance to their food-related lifestyles. This study was performed to provide Korean food service companies basic information to implement a strategy for the globalization of Korean food. As a result of the empirical analysis, the food-related lifestyles of Japanese consumers were deduced to the following four factors: "health and safetyoriented lifestyle", "palate and safety-oriented lifestyle", "economic efficiency-oriented lifestyle", and "simplicity-oriented lifestyle". Further, as a result of the cluster analysis, food-related lifestyles were classified into the following three groups: "a group highly interested in food-related life", "an economic efficiency-oriented group", and "a simplicity-oriented group". Second, there were significant differences in demographic characteristics and the characteristics of Korean food consumption behaviors between the groups. Third, also in a comparison of satisfaction with and loyalty to Korean restaurants with crucial attributes during the selection of Korean food, there were significant differences between the groups. Therefore, it is necessary to develop various Korean food products that will cater to Japanese consumers in accordance with each segmented group.
The purpose of this study was to investigate consumption behaviors regarding red pepper paste according to the food-related lifestyles of housewives. Data were collected from 210 housewives living in the Gyeongnam region of Korea through a self-administered questionnaire on November, 2008. Frequencies, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, cluster analysis, one-way analysis of variance, and chi-square tests were conducted using SPSS v. 14.0. Food-related lifestyles were categorized into one of five factors: popularity-seeking type, health-seeking type, convenience-seeking type, safety-seeking type, and taste-seeking type. In addition, the respondents were divided into four groups by cluster analysis: safety-seeking group, convenience-seeking group, popularity-seeking group, and taste-seeking group. The chi-square tests revealed that there were significant differences in awareness regarding how to prepare red pepper paste, the reason for buying it at the market, where to buy it, where to obtain information regarding it, the most important factor considered when buying it, and the reason for dissatisfaction with it at the market.
