A Novel Engineering and Creative Learning Process Based on Constructionism

  • This paper shows that novel engineering (NE) is a creative learning process (CLP) based on Seymour Papert's constructionism. First, the paper introduces NE, CLP, and constructionism. Next, a sample NE lesson is explored. NE is an innovative way of integrating literacy into an engineering discipline that was developed by the Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) at Tufts University. NE consists of seven steps: picking a book, identifying problems, designing solutions, building, feedback, upgrading solutions, and reconstructing stories. Lifelong Kindergarten by Mitchel Resnick of the MIT Media Lab describes CLP, and the four elements necessary for a lesson to be creative. NE can be viewed as one of the most creative, comprehensive learning models ever developed. NE integrates several paradigms in Korea, following all the constructs of both CLP and constructionism. The aim of this paper is to show that NE is based on both CLP and constructionism.

사회구성주의와 비판적 사회구성주의 관점으로 본 다문화가정 주거의 실재 (Reality of Housing for Multi-Cultural Families from the Perspectives of Social Constructionism and Critical Social Constructionism)

  • The purpose of this study was to review the conceptual framework of social constructionism and critical social constructionism in the research area of multi-cultural family homes, using a literature review. Fopp argued that social constructionism had an objectivation problem that only considered the actor side as a policy object; therefore he suggested a weaker social constructionist perspective with moderate relativism and the application of feminist epistemology to marginal life for maximizing objectivity. This article explores a conceptual framework for studying the reality of housing of multi-cultural families in Korea in the light of constructionist ideas and presents a review of empirical positivist data to support the framework. Based on results, using the social constructionist framework, five contexts (structural, institutional, organizational, operational, and intersubjective) were reviewed and ideas were suggested to develop an appropriate future situation for multi-cultural family homes. For a weaker social constructionist framework, three National Survey of Multi-Cultural Family Homes data sets were reviewed to determine the real condition of multi-cultural family homes. Further, from a feminist perspective, the empirical data of marginalized multi-cultural family homes were reviewed from the perspectives of gender inequality of decision making, cultural adaptation, and differentiation in housing related areas. In conclusion, two perspectives were useful for understanding multi-cultural family housing in Korea but must be compensated with substantial empirical data for a holistic approach.

  • Mid of 1980s witnessed the beginning of a new trend regarding the elderly as the Third Age Group, which is capable of positive selection for their later life. These changes are caused not only by the rising cost of caring them as the dependent to the society, but also by paradigm shift from the clinical and biomedical model to political economy and critical gerontology. The paradigm shift is based on the social constructionism as a perspective on the later life. In this communication the development of social constructionism is reviewed as an approach on the living environment for later life through literature survey. Emphases were made on the anti-ageism instead of ageism in the analysis of the social constructionism perspective for living environment in later life. Individual practice, influencing the practice of others, influencing agency policy, and developing theory were addressed and emphasized for the practice of anti-ageism. This study found the importance of the development of the social constructionism perspective on the study and practice regarding living environment for ‘the Third Age’ in Korean situation.

<과학문화 발전 프로그램>을 위한 철학적 기초로서의 비판적 구성주의 (Critical Constructionism as a Philosophical Foundation of the Program for Enhancing Science Culture)

  • 과학문화의 발전을 위해서는 체계적이고 계획적인 프로그램이 있어야 한다. 그러한 프로그램은 과학하는 방법에 대한 과학철학적 이해를 기초로 삼아 마련되어야 한다. 이를 위해 그 동안 과학철학사상 가장 두드러진 학파들을 1) '규범적' 과학철학, 2) '역사적' 과학철학, 3) '자연화된' 과학철학의 세 가지로 정리한 다음, 각각의 입장들을 하나로 통합해낼 수 있는 입장을 <비판적 구성주의>로 명명 제안한다. 그리고 비판적 구성주의는 지금까지의 '과학하는 방법'에 대한 기술적-규범적 이해를 종합적으로 검토한 바탕 위에 성립된 입장으로서 '과학학'이라는 간학문적 접근을 매개할 수 있는 과학학 방법론의 기초로 가장 적당하다는 주장과 그 근거를 제시한다. 아울러 '비판적 구성주의'에 기초한 과학문화 발전 프로그램이 지속적이고 체계적인 '과학문화 발전 프로그램'의 철학적 기초로서 적절한 이유를 제시한다.

  • There have been many requests for development of senior housing in Korea. Therefore it was very important to review how senior houses are established and managed in other countries. In this point, this research compared the actual conditions of the homes for the elderly in the U.K, U.S.A and Japan. Through the process, this research aimed to find the implications for Korea. The research was conducted by the literature review on senior congregate housing with Franklin's(1998) social constructionism perspective. This kind of research might be utilized as a theoretical framework for performance of any systems of housing for the aged. In this study, the researchers suggested the implications of senior congregate housing as follows. Firstly, in terms of structural context, government in the U.K, U.S.A., and Japan were positively concerned with solving the housing problems for senior citizens despite some differences. Secondly, from an institutional context, institutions related with provision, construction, and management of senior congregate housing were systematically consolidated and they all adapted the housing and welfare policy. Thirdly, in organizational context, there was an organization in charge of provision and management that exclusively oversaw the housing for the elderly in both the public and private sectors. Fourthly, in operational context, standards regarding space were clearly set both for individual units and common spaces as well as for facilities and services for the residents. Finally in terms of intersubjective context, the competency of housing manager and ways to involve the families which were important for residents' independent life were under study.

컴퓨터와 수학교육에서 환경의 설계 (Designing a Environment in Computers and Mathematics Education)

  • 이 논문에서는 컴퓨터와 수학교육을 바라보는 두 가지 서로 다른 입장에 대하여 알아보고, 그 중 구성주의적(constructivist) 입장에서 컴퓨터 환경의 설계를 논의한다. 이를 위하여 컴퓨터와 수학교육을 위한 바람직한 기본 원리를 구성주의(constructionism) 시각으로 살펴본다. 나아가 이러한 바람직한 기본 원리를 '함수화'라는 용어를 사용하여 규정하고, 이를 통해 컴퓨터 환경 설계 방법을 모색해 본다. 이 연구를 통하여 우리는 설계 과정에 대한 논의가 부족한 상태로 학교 현장에 도입되는 기존 컴퓨터용 소프트웨어들에 대한 문제점을 인식하고, 새로운 환경의 설계 원칙과 과정에 대해 논의하고, 실제 구현한다. 그 예로 LOGO와 DGS를 새로운 대상의 도입을 통하여 통합하는 방안에 대하여 논의한다. 이 논문에서 구현한 새로운 대상은 LOGO와 DGS의 함수화 명령 체계를 모두 이용하여 만들 수 있고, 동시에 LOGO와 DGS의 함수화 명령 체계으로 변화하고 조작할 수 있는 대상이다.

프랭클린(Franklin)의 사회구성주의 모델 관점으로 본 한국의 노인주택 맥락 (The Context of Housing for the Old Age in Korea with Perspective of Franklin's Social Constructionism Model)

  • This study was performed by the literature review on housing of the aged in Korea with social constructionism perspective. This kind of research may be utilized as a theoretical framework for performance of any systems of housing for the aged. In terms of structural context, the value of conventional custom of filial piety thoughts and duty for family are being collapsed, which nay be suitable to the change of society, should be considered for positive acceptance of changes in ideology. In terms of institutional context, a method to grope for housing for the aged should be established through amicable cooperation between organizations of legalization concerned. In terms of organizational context, there is no organization that exclusively concern housing for the aged until now, thus, development of concrete manual is required for jobs of service in current department of policy for the aged. In terms of operational context, the service may include the understanding of characteristics of the aged and design of housing may also change the service of administration, and as cooperation in the local community care systems may change the service to the aged in the field. Connection of these services and operation of these organizations nay be required in the field to manage housing. Finally in terms of intersubjective context, as the form and method of housing management service is important, with understanding of the social meaning and importance on the role of manager.

다문화가정 주거의 연구를 위한 접근방법과 쟁점 (Approaches to and Issues in Research on Multi-Cultural Family Homes)

  • As cultural diversity has gained a great deal of attention and the social fabric of Korean society is redefined, the number of studies on multi-cultural family homes has been growing in the area of human ecology, but relevant research is rarely found on the subject of housing. While the emphasis of housing research is on multidisciplinary approaches and empirical research is highly valued, a theoretical and methodological platform for discussing the new rising agenda of multi-cultural family homes is lacking. The purpose of this study was to explore approaches to and to discuss the issues in research for multi-cultural family homes in terms of housing theories and multidisciplinary approaches. To understand the housing related needs of multi-cultural families, this study highlights social constructionism, the ecological perspective, and feminist epistemology. These three multidisciplinary approaches were useful for generating an ontological analysis of multi-cultural family homes. Further, this study highlights two housing related theories, the microsociological and housing pathways approaches, for dealing with multi-cultural family homes. In conclusion, the five approaches were useful for exploring issues in housing research on multi-cultural family homes with appropriate research methods like hermeneutics, quantitative, and qualitative methods, and field research. Insights into using perspectives and holistic approaches might be useful for solving the problems of multi-cultural family homes in Korea.

수학교육에서 컴퓨터 환경이 지니는 유창성의 의미 (Fluency in Technology for Mathematics Education)

  • 이 글은 컴퓨터 환경에서의 유창성 교육에 대하여 논의한다. 여기서 유창성이란 컴퓨터 환경, 기술 정보 환경을 이용하여 지식을 재조직하고, 창의적이고 적절한 방법으로 자신을 표현하고, 정보를 단지 이해하기 보다는 생산하거나 만드는 능력을 말한다. 이 글은 구성주의적 입장에서 유창성 교육의 의미와 유창성 교육을 위한 학습 전략으로 디자인을 통한 학습에 대하여 살펴본다. 또한 디자인을 통한 학습 환경으로 수학교육용 마이크로월드의 설계 원칙을 생각하고 이를 적용하여 마이크로월드를 구현한다. 마지막으로 이 환경에서의 학습-지도 사례를 제시하여 그 의미를 생각한다.

수업 실천 사례를 통한 노벨 엔지니어링의 이론적 고찰 (A Theoretical Review on Novel Engineering through the Case Studies)

  • 본 논문에서는 현재까지 발표된 노벨 엔지니어링 수업 실천 사례들이 가지는 이론적 배경과 교육 방법적 기반을 문헌 연구를 통해서 고찰해보고자 한다. 이를 위해서 2016년부터 2023년까지 출간된 노벨 엔지니어링 관련 학술 발표 논문과 학위 논문 30여편을 선정하여 조사하였다. 조사 결과, 이론적 배경으로는 시모어 패퍼트의 구성주의와 비고츠키의 사회문화적 구성주의, 교육 방법적 기반으로는 창의적 문제 해결 학습, 문제 중심 학습, 교과 간 융합 수업, 액션 러닝, 독서 교육 및 글쓰기 교육과의 연계, 통합 교육과정 운영 가능성으로 정리할 수 있었다. 이 연구가 노벨 엔지니어링 융합 수업 모형으로서 이론적 가치를 다지고 미래 교육을 준비하는 교사들에게 하나의 대안이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.
