  • Limited resources for construction material in the Mae-Hae region, a remote Northern Thailand, acted as an impetus to introduce a new way for constructing their dwellings. The new construction material brought new construction methodology, namely, using earth and bamboo which are indigenous materials, readily available for them to use. Using indigenous material at Mae-Hae region was most ecological and logical method for establishing sustainable dwellings both in terms of monetary and ecological reasons. Prior to the construction at Mae-Hae, Thailand, series of experimental tests on the strength of rammed earth were performed off site at our university and also brought soil samples from the actual job site at Mae-Hae for detailed soil analysis. Through the tests, integrity of the earth and characteristics of the soil were established to build a small senior citizen center as an example. This appropriate technology is expected to contribute to the sustainable construction at Mae-Hae.

  • The construction machine is the composite machine assembled by about 30,000 parts. Excavator, one kind of a construction machine, plays the leading role for export of construction equipment. It is generally impossible to produce all of the items within one company. Especially the supply of hydraulic control valves, one of the core part of the construction equipment, depends on the import heavily. So it is important to make an efficient production plan of hydraulic control valves in the company. The most important thing for the production scheduling of a hydraulic control valve is to make production schedule keeping the start date for assembly line for an excavator and to make minimization of the stock level. The production plan of hydraulic control valve includes the decision of the quantity supplied by subcontractor. This paper presents a scheme for a scheduling system of the hydraulic control valve considering the schedule of the assembly line for excavator production. This paper provides a methodology, which can make a plan of supply and production and generate a detailed schedule for daily production.

  • It is getting more difficult to construct new transmission lines, due to the increase of people's demand resulting from the change of social environment and people's consciousness. In order to solve these complicated conditions. we developed a computer system to support the route selecting and surveying of a transmission line. This paper introdouces the methodology for route selecting, designing, surveying of a transmission line and tower designing process using a computer system.

  • Generally, 4D CAD can be used for visualizing construction schedule information in railway construction project. It is important that 3D CAD object should be represented by real construction situation according to construction site condition. However, it is difficult to visualize real construction situation in 4D CAD viewer because 3D objects should be separated by limited duration of each activity. This study suggests a morphing technology for visualizing 4D object by each activity schedule according to real construction progress.

  • In the recent years, the subject of the M&A of construction company has become one of important issue in the domestic construction industry. Therefore, the purpose of this research consider the rational plans of M&A not only for systematizing types about process of M&A in construction industry, but also for analyzing the significant characteristic of M&A in korea. To achieve this objective, this research performs a case study of M&A to embody the major trend and implications. The results of this research based on this methodology can be systematized as falling into two areas : 1)the primary types of M&A were divided into 4 categories by analyzing the results of interview, 2)the process of M& A from the result of case study.

  • Learning has become an important aspect for any organization to stay relevant and competitive in the corporate world of survival. In construction industry, the international construction joint ventures (ICJVs) provide an excellent platform with opportunity of learning among partners seeking to develop new area of competency and improve their overall competitiveness for their next project endeavor. This paper discusses the development of a conceptual model of effective learning in ICJVs using four major stages of development in a typical joint venture (JV) 's process. The study identified that there are three key constructs that contribute to effective learning comprising learning conditions in the JV's pre-inception stage, success factors of JV for learning in the forming & organizing stage, and learning actions in the implementation & adjustment stage. The effective learning outcomes are measured by the characteristics of learning organization during the JV's completion & evaluation stage. Details and issues of each stage and the methodology of research will be presented and discussed.

  • This paper presents an evaluation of feasibility studies conducted to justify investments in infrastructure projects. An analysis of a previous feasibility study for a highway construction project is presented in this paper with an emphasis on the estimates and forecasts presented in that study in order to weigh expected benefits from the project against expected costs. The forecasted numbers are compared with actual data collected during the operation phase about the usage of the facility. The comparison reveals a huge difference between estimated numbers and actual numbers. Based on the lessons learned from the analyzed case study, recommendations are presented to improve feasibility studies for infrastructure projects including: peer review of feasibility studies; before-and-after feasibility studies; and defined scope and methodology for feasibility studies. Decision makers are advised to take outcomes of feasibility studies for infrastructure projects with extreme caution as some studies may provide erroneous and misleading input to their decisions regarding investment in infrastructure projects.

  • The construction industry's importance to nation building, economic empowerment, and contributions to global commerce cannot be over emphasised. However, poor productivity, accidents, rework, time and cost overruns, and client dissatisfaction have characterised the industry performance in a multi-dimensional way. The central issue in this particular research is the seemingly inadequate achievement of optimum performance in the construction process, either with respect to value for money for the client and the entire construction supply chain or value in terms of the utility derived from built assets in spite of efforts by government and governmental bodies such as the Construction Industry Development Board (cidb) to increase industry performance. Therefore, based upon an extensive review of related literature, the paper reports on effects and causes of non-value adding activities in the construction industry in general, and South African construction in particular. The research findings indicate that activities that can be referred to as non-value activities are not only prevalent, but they can also be held responsible for performance related issues in terms of cost, time, quality and health and safety (H&S) in construction; and the exploration of pluralism in the research methodology may result in a robust model based upon the system dynamics approach. Therefore, the study suggests that there is major scope for value optimisation in the construction process especially in terms of availability and implementation of interventions, which have not only proven successful in other industries, but are also adaptable in the construction industry context.
