Data-driven prediction of compressive strength of FRP-confined concrete members: An application of machine learning models

  • The strength models for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined normal strength concrete (NC) cylinders available in the literature have been suggested based on small databases using limited variables of such structural members portraying less accuracy. The artificial neural network (ANN) is an advanced technique for precisely predicting the response of composite structures by considering a large number of parameters. The main objective of the present investigation is to develop an ANN model for the axial strength of FRP-confined NC cylinders using various parameters to give the highest accuracy of the predictions. To secure this aim, a large experimental database of 313 FRP-confined NC cylinders has been constructed from previous research investigations. An evaluation of 33 different empirical strength models has been performed using various statistical parameters (root mean squared error RMSE, mean absolute error MAE, and coefficient of determination R2) over the developed database. Then, a new ANN model using the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) has been proposed based on the experimental database that portrayed the highest performance as compared with the previous models with R2=0.92, RMSE=0.27, and MAE=0.33. Therefore, the suggested ANN model can accurately capture the axial strength of FRP-confined NC cylinders that can be used for the further analysis and design of such members in the construction industry.

국내 최초 TBM선굴진 2-Arch터널 설계사례 연구 (The First Case Study of TBM Pre-Excavation Type 2-Arch Tunnel in Korea)

  • 근래 들어 도심지 지하공간 개발에 대한 수요가 증가함에 따라 도심지 터널계획이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 도심지 구간에는 주민 생활환경을 고려하여 지하정거장이 계획되며, 기존 구조물의 안정성 및 환경훼손 저감 등을 위해 2-Arch터널 정거장을 적용하고 있다. 그러나 도심지 구간은 심한 풍화작용에 따라 불량지반의 심도가 깊게 발달되어 터널 안정성 확보를 고려한 신중한 계획이 요구된다. 이뿐만 아니라 도심지의 복합적인 지반상태를 고려하여 본선터널에 TBM 기계굴착 공법을 적용하는 경우, 기존 NATM형 2-Arch터널과는 시공연계성을 확보할 수 없게 된다. 본 연구에서는 쉴드TBM과 2-Arch터널을 조합한 형태인 TBM선굴진 2-Arch터널을 국내 최초로 적용한 설계사례를 중점으로 기술하고자 하였다. 중앙터널 굴착후 좌우터널 시공을 고려하여 쉴드TBM 세그먼트 설치 및 해체를 위해 고려한 설계사항을 설명하고, 수치해석을 활용한 안정성 검토를 통해 TBM선굴진 2-Arch터널의 설치효과를 검증하였다.

  • 터널누수는 주변지반의 응력 및 간극수압을 변화시켜 터널 안정성 및 지반변형에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 결함요소이다. 장기간 또는 큰 규모의 누수발생은 터널 라이닝의 불안정성 및 지표침하와 같은 터널 구조물 및 주변지반 환경에 손상을 일으킬 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 누수발생 시 터널의 구조 안정성 및 지반거동에 미치는 영향을 수치해석적으로 분석하였다. 고려된 터널은 내부로 주변 지하수의 유입을 허용하지 않는 비배수 조건으로 가정하였고 터널 완공 후 라이닝에서 누수가 발생하는 것으로 설정하였다. 누수로 인한 터널 구조물 및 지반의 거동을 모사하기 위해 수리역학 연계해석이 수행되었으며 파이썬으로 개발된 TOUGH-FLAC 시뮬레이터가 사용되었다. 누수 발생량과 누수위치를 변화시켜 수치모사가 수행되었으며 수리역학 해석을 위한 연계항들이 복합거동 결과에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다.

Effect of black sand as a partial replacement for fine aggregate on properties as a novel radiation shielding of high-performance heavyweight concrete

  • To defend against harmful gamma radiation, new types of materials for use in the construction of heavyweight concrete (HWC) are still needed to be developed. This research introduces new materials to be employed as a partial replacement for fine aggregate (FA) to manufacture high-performance heavyweight concrete (HPHWC). These materials include hematite, black sand, ilmenite, and magnetite, with substitution ratios of 50% and 100% of FA. In this research, the hardening and fresh characteristics of HPHWC were obtained. Concrete samples' Gamma-ray linear attenuation coefficient was evaluated utilizing a gamma source of Co-60 through the thicknesses of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 15 cm. High temperatures were studied for HPHWC samples, which were exposed to up to 700℃ for two hours. Energy-dispersive x-rays and a scanning electron microscope carried out microstructure analyses. Magnetite as an FA attained the lowest compressive strength of 87.1 MPa, but the best radiation protection characteristics and the highest density of 3100 kg/m3 were achieved. After 28 days, the attenuation efficiency of concrete mixtures was increased by 6.5% when fine sand was replaced with black sand at a ratio of 50%. HPHWC, which contains hematite, black sand, ilmenite, and magnetite, is designed to reduce environmental and health dangers and be used in medicinal, military, and civil applications.

Efficient repair of damaged FRP-reinforced geopolymeric columns using carbon fiber reinforced polymers

  • Geopolymer concrete (GC) can be competently utilized as a practical replacement for cement to prevent a high carbon footprint and to give a direction toward sustainable concrete construction. Moreover, previous studies mostly focused on the axial response of glass fiber reinforced polymer (glass-FRP) concrete compressive elements without determining the effectiveness of repairing them after their partial damage. The goal of this study is to assess the structural effectiveness of partially damaged GC columns that have been restored using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (carbon-FRP). Bars made of glass-FRP and helix made of glass-FRP are used to reinforce these columns. For comparative study, six of the twelve circular specimens-each measuring 300 mm×1200 mm-are reinforced with steel bars, while the other four are axially strengthened using glass-FRP bars (referred to as GSG columns). The broken columns are repaired and strengthened using carbon-FRP sheets after the specimens have been subjected to concentric and eccentric compression until a 30% loss in axial strength is attained in the post-peak phase. The study investigates the effects of various variables on important response metrics like axial strength, axial deflection, load-deflection response, stiffness index, strength index, ductility index, and damage response. These variables include concentric and eccentric compression, helix pitch, steel bars, carbon-FRP wrapping, and glass-FRP bars. Both before and after the quick repair process, these metrics are evaluated. The results of the investigation show that the axial strengths of the reconstructed SSG and GSG columns are, respectively, 15.3% and 20.9% higher than those of their original counterparts. In addition, compared to their SSG counterparts, the repaired GSG samples exhibit an improvement in average ductility indices of 2.92% and a drop in average stiffness indices of 3.2%.

Load-transferring mechanism and evaluation theory of bolt with single and double nut fasteners

  • The use of the ordinary double nut (i.e., ODN) composed of a master nut (i.e., M-nut) and a slave nut (i.e., S-nut) is a highly efficient method to prevent bolts loosening. A novel double nut (i.e., FODN) composed of a master nut (i.e., M-nut) and flat slave nut (i.e., FS-nut) is proposed to save raw materials. The bolt fastening tests with single nut, ODN and FODN are performed to investigate the preload and counterbalance forces. Corresponding finite element analysis (FEA) models are established and validated by comparing the preload with the experimental results. The load-bearing capacity, the extrusion effect, and the contact stress of each engaged thread for ODN and FODN are observed by FEA. The experimental and simulated results revealed that the bolt fastening with double-nut has different load-transferring mechanisms from single-nut. Nevertheless, for double-nut/bolt assemblies, the FS-nut can provide load transfer that is like that of the S-nut, and the FODN is a reasonable and reliable fastening method. Furthermore, based on the theory of Yamamoto, a formula considering the extrusion effect is proposed to calculate the preload distribution of the double-nut, which is applicable to varying thicknesses of slave-nuts in double-nut/bolt assemblies.

Ductility demands of steel frames equipped with self-centring fuses under near-fault earthquake motions considering multiple yielding stages

  • This paper investigates the ductility demands of steel frames equipped with self-centring fuses under near-fault earthquake motions considering multiple yielding stages. The study is commenced by verifying a trilinear self-centring hysteretic model accounting for multiple yielding stages of steel frames equipped with self-centring fuses. Then, the seismic response of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems following the validated trilinear self-centring hysteretic law is examined by a parametric study using a near-fault earthquake ground motion database composed of 200 earthquake records as input excitations. Based on a statistical investigation of more than fifty-two (52) million inelastic spectral analyses, the effect of the post-yield stiffness ratios, energy dissipation coefficient and yielding displacement ratio on the mean ductility demand of the system is examined in detail. The analysis results indicate that the increase of post-yield stiffness ratios, energy dissipation coefficient and yielding displacement ratio reduces the ductility demands of the self-centring oscillators responding in multiple yielding stages. A set of empirical expressions for quantifying the ductility demands of trilinear self-centring hysteretic oscillators are developed using nonlinear regression analysis of the analysis result database. The proposed regression model may offer a practical tool for designers to estimate the ductility demand of a low-to-medium rise self-centring steel frame equipped with self-centring fuses progressing in the ultimate stage under near-fault earthquake motions in design and evaluation.

Investigation of crack growth in a brick masonry wall due to twin perpendicular excavations

  • In urban construction projects, it is crucial to evaluate the impacts of excavation-induced ground movements in order to protect surrounding structures. These ground movements resulting in damages to the neighboring structures and facilities (i.e., parking basement) are of main concern for the geotechnical engineers. Even more, the danger exists if the nearby structure is an ancient or masonry brick building. The formations of cracks are indicators of structural damage caused by excavation-induced ground disturbances, which pose issues for excavation-related projects. Although the effects of deep excavations on existing brick masonry walls have been thoroughly researched, the impact of twin excavations on a brick masonry wall is rarely described in the literature. This work presents a 3D parametric analysis using an advanced hypoplastic model to investigate the responses of an existing isolated brick masonry wall to twin perpendicular excavations in dry sand. One after the other, twin perpendicular excavations are simulated. This article also looks at how varying sand relative densities (Dr = 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90%) affect the masonry wall. The cracks at the top of the wall were caused by the hogging deformation profile caused by the twin excavations. By raising the relative density from 30% to 90%, excavation-induced footing settlement is greatly minimized. The crack width at the top of the wall reduces as a result of the second excavation in very loose to loose sand (Dr = 30% and 50%). While the crack width on the top of the wall increases owing to the second excavation in medium to very dense sand (Dr = 70% and 90%).

  • 심해에 건설되는 해저기지는 우주공간에서의 조건보다 더 극한의 환경에 건설되며, 이를 위해서는 구조공학, 자원공학, 기계공학, 조선공학, 해양공학, 지질학 등의 관련 분야의 극한기술이 상호 융합되어야 한다. 또한, 해양자원 개발에는 해양물리, 화학, 생물학, 지질학 등 기초 해양과학 이외에도 기계, 전자, 조선, 기상, 잠수의학 등 응용과학 지식의 융·복합이 필요하며, 각 필요 기술들의 발전과 각 기술의 종합적인 융합이 이루어져야만 해저기지의 건설이 가능할 것이다. 해저기지의 건설을 위해 개발되는 극한 기술의 발전은 각 분야의 최첨단 기술이 될 것이며, 우주공간 및 타 분야에도 적용이 가능하여, 최신 기술을 선점할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.

연속굴착 쉴드 TBM 기술 관련 해외기술 및 개발사례 조사 (Investigation of Prior Technology and Development Case for Consecutive Excavation Technique of Shield TBM)

  • TBM의 실굴진율을 향상시키기 위한 연속굴착 기술들이 개발되고 있다. 연속굴착은 설치중인 세그먼트를 제외한 나머지 세그먼트에 추력을 가해, 굴진 정지 시간을 줄이는 기술이다. 본 기술보고는 연속굴착 세그먼트에 관한 선행기술을 조사하였다. 주요 선행기술을 헬리컬 세그먼트, 육각형 세그먼트, 기존 세그먼트 방법으로 분류했다. 헬리컬 세그먼트 방법은 아직 시공사례가 없으며, 육각형 세그먼트 방법은 상용화에 성공하지 못했다. 기존 세그먼트를 이용한 연속굴착 방법은 실증에 성공했다. 해당 기술에 대한 추진잭 추력, 운영방법을 분석했다. 국내에서도 TBM 연속굴착 연구개발이 진행 중이며, 성공사례 분석을 통해 독자적인 연속굴착 방법이 개발되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.
