  • King Seong carried out the large-scale construction transferring the capital from Wungjin (Gongju) to Sabi (Buyeo) in 538. But because most of the Buyeo area was the low swamp in the time, it needed above all to form a site before transferring the capital. Until recently, in addition to the scientific excavation, the relief excavations for the construction of new building or the formation of road were conducted on many sites in the Buyeo area. As a result, many remains which were formed on the low swamp including the temple site of Neungsan-ri, Dongna Castle, the remains of Ssangbuk-ri (280-5 Bukpo, Hyeonnaedeul) and the remains of Gua-ri were identified. Also in these remains, the various engineering construction methods irrespective of the nature of remains were used for the purpose of the soft ground reinforcement as follows: mattress method of construction, pile designation, stone alignment, filing of decomposed granite soil, culverts and storage tanks. Especially, the mattress method of construction and the pile designation are thought to be the traditional engineering construction method at least in that they are appeared since the Three Han Sates era. And these soft ground construction methods had an effect on the construction of reservoir in Japan at the time. In the future, the construction method for soft ground reinforcement shall be concerned and studied further in the architecture and the civil engineering as well as the archeology.

  • Since its adoption by the transportation sector in the early 1990s, partnering has been broadly used with the traditional delivery method by many agencies with significant reported benefits. During the same era, a number of transportation agencies (DOTs) started experimenting with a wide variety of alternative project delivery methods (APDMs) aimed at improving the delivery of highway construction projects. The effect of collaborative working strategies such as partnering, together with the APDMs have become somehow interrelated posing a potential challenge on how to effectively integrate partnering as a concept in the APDMs. The salient question has been if the collaborative nature of these APDMs has affected how partnering is being used by state DOTs. Through an extensive literature review, analysis of 32 CMGC RFPs/RFQs and review of three CMGC case studies, the study found that there is limited information in state DOT documents that show procedures on the usage of partnering with CMGC projects. Majority of DOTs are relying on the inherent nature of the CMGC contract to promote healthy collaborative practices and there is the need to consider partnering during preconstruction and construction separately to cater for any personnel change over. The study also revealed that partnering may become less important at the construction phase due to overlap between partnering and CMGC practices. In support of this finding, a CMGC partnering model was developed that can be adopted by DOTs. This paper contributes to both research and practice by expanding the existing knowledge on partnering on APDMs.

  • In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, data plays a vital role in enhancing the productivity of industries. To advance digitalization in the construction industry, which suffers from a lack of available data, this study proposes a model that classifies construction site photos by work types. Unlike traditional image classification models that solely rely on visual data, the model in this study includes semantic analysis of construction work types. This is achieved by extracting the significance of relationships between objects and work types from the standard construction specification. These relationships are then used to enhance the classification process by correlating them with objects detected in photos. This model improves the interpretability and reliability of classification results, offering convenience to field operators in photo categorization tasks. Additionally, the model's practical utility has been validated through integration into a classification program. As a result, this study is expected to contribute to the digitalization of the construction industry.

  • Gene expression in a cell is regulated by mutual activations or repressions between genes. Identifying the gene regulation network will be one of the most important research topics in the post genomic era. We propose a linear dynamic model of gene regulation for the yeast cell cycle. A small gene network consisting of about 40 genes is reconstructed from the analysis of micro-array gene expression data of yeast S. cerevisiae published by P. Spellman et al. We show that the network construction is consistent with the result of the hierarchical cluster analysis.

  • The development of information technology, which has brought the fusion of broadcasting and telecommunication, wire and wireless communication and voice and data, is developing new fusions like home network which is composed of IT, construction, and home appliances. This trend is considered to continue and to make other new fusions based on previous ones. In this study, we investigate the roles of RFID middleware by identifying the relationships between the new expected fusions and RFID.

  • The GK immersed tunnel as a part of the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link Project, introduced the immersed tunnel method into Korea for the first time. This challeging project to be completed in 2010 will open a new era to link oceans of the world with optimized design and safety for future use. The immersed tunnel method would possibly suitable for use in construction of a sub sea tunnel from Korea to Japan and from Korea to China that could potentially be built in the distant future. We hope the techniques learned from the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link Project can be applied to further projects in the near future.

  • In this era of information, the public library takes a important role in the local community. In several years, public libraries have been proliferated in our society. However, there have not been specific planning standards of space size for construction of public library. The situation has lead the local governments to the need of consulting for the construction and management of library in search of appropriate guideline. The research paper focuses on the result of consulting support project for construction and management of public library. It examines total 11 libraries which were consulted from 2009 to 2011. It examines the configurational differences between the first scheme from the local government and the final scheme after the consulting, and the percentages of gross areas of each parts of library, reference and reading area, office area, education and cultural area, and public common use area. The analysis concludes that reference and reading area increased by 6.4% from 34.1% to 40.5%, and public common use area reduced by 6.1% from 30.2% to 24.1%, which represents a certain tendency of the configuration ratio of the each parts. Thus, the paper could be a starting point of establishing planning standard of space size for public library.

  • In recent farming communities, the international open-economy tendency has been accelerated, and they are in the situation where they cannot but compete against international producers and markets. As a means to survive in this competitive era, a systematic agricultural information system is required to be established. Accordingly, in recent Korean agricultural communities, it's been regarded as an important alternative to provide and construct agricultural facility and to build an information system to maintain and manage them. However, in reality, the agricultural facility has not been constructed systematically enough, and the information system for the users of the agricultural facility has not been sufficient enough. Therefore, this research aims at analyzing the demands of users which might help establish the agricultural facility information system, and at providing information by suggesting what information the users of an agricultural facility information system want. Once the agricultural facility users are provided with some necessary information, the construction process will be more systematized, a structural safety will be secured by the construction by a professional enterprise, and the cost burden has to bear for users who can be effectively decreased by actively reacting to the natural disasters on the facility.

  • The overuse level of cement for civil industry has several undesirable social and ecological consequences. Substitution of cement with industrial wastes, called by-products, such as fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, metakaoline, rice husk ash, etc. as the mineral admixtures offers various advantages such as technical, economical and environmental which are very important in the era of sustainability in construction industry. The paper presents the experimental investigations for assessing the mechanical properties of the concrete made using the Pozzolanic waste materials (supplementary cementitious materials) such as fly ash and silica fume as the cement replacing materials. These materials were used in eight trial mixes with varying amount of ordinary Portland cement. These SCMs were kept in equal proportions in all the eight trial mixes. The chemical admixture (High Range Water Reducing Admixture) was also added to improve the workability of concrete. The compressive strengths for 7, 28, 40 and 90 days curing were evaluated whereas the flexural and tensile strengths corresponding to 7, 28 and 40 days curing were evaluated. The study corroborates that the Pozzolanic materials used in the present investigation as partial replacement for cement can render the sustainable concrete which can be used in the rigid pavement construction.
