Development of Automation Technology for Modeling of Railway Infrastructure using BIM Library (BIM 라이브러리를 활용한 철도 인프라의 모델링 자동화 기술 개발)

  • Recently, research on the application of BIM has continuously been active not only in architecture but also in civil engineering in order to improve work efficiency across the project's planning, design, construction and maintenance phases. However, the empirical applications of BIM targeting to civil engineering scope of construction sites still lags compared to architectural sized projects. This is because BIM tools are mainly based upon vertical structures of architecture, thereby most of them have difficulties and limitations to get utilized on horizontal structures of civil engineering. Therefore, this study intends to propose automation technology of design using BIM library and to indicate its field availability through case application on a railway project representing linear infrastructure. In addition, it put forward the utilization plan of the automation technology upto 4D and 5D by continue making use of the BIM model created in the project's design stage up through the maintenance stage. The novel method of the technology proposed in this paper incorporates the automatic creation of the BIM library based on two-dimensional tunnel cross-sections and sweeping of it over three-dimensional alignment to create a BIM model of linear infrastructure. The proposed technology is anticipated to improve the efficiecny of modeling process of railway projects based on linear structures.

  • As the concrete pouring work relies on manual work, there is a lot of room for automated equipment development. In this study, as a basic study on the development of an automated system for pouring concrete, the trend of patent applications by year, country and detailed technology was investigated. Related technologies were classified into screed automation, CPB automation, and concrete pouring integrated system to analyze patent application trends. As a result, since 1999, patent applications have been steadily in progress, repeating increases and decreases in Japan, Korea, the United States, and Europe. In addition, the growth stage of the market is in the early stages of maturity, and patent applications for related technologies are expected to continue. In the future, based on the patent application trend analyzed in this study, the development direction of the automated concrete pouring system will be reviewed and the redundancy of similar technologies will be reviewed.

Automation of Roadway Lighting Illuminance Measurement

  • Roadway lighting is an integral element of a highway system. Luminaires on roadways provide viewing conditions for drivers and pedestrians during nighttime in order to improve safety. It is time-consuming and labor-intensive to manually measure roadway illuminance at predetermined spots with a handheld illuminance meter. To improve the efficiency of illuminance measurement, a remote-control electrical cart and a drone were utilized to carry an illuminance meter for the measurements. The measurements were performed on the marked grid points along the pavement. To measure the illuminance manually, one person measures illuminance at each grid point with the handheld meter and another person records the illuminance value. To measure the illuminance with the remote-control cart, the illuminance meter is attached to the cart and it measures illuminance values continuously as the cart moves along the grid lines. With the drone, the meter records the illuminance continuously as the drone carries the meter and flies along the grid line. Because the drone can fly at different heights, the measurements can be done at different altitudes. The illuminance measurements using the cart and the drone are described in detail and compared with manual measurements in this paper. It is shown through this study that automated measurements can greatly improve the efficiency of roadway illuminance data measurements.

  • For the purpose of automatic management and enhancing quality of construction, information technology has been employed in construction field recently. As a consequence, informative construction, which utilizes information technology to reduce construction time and optimize construction sequence, becomes a state-of-art field of construction. Considering this case, construction field should more actively adopt other engineering technologies of rapidly advancing fields, such as electronic, control, and informative engineering, in order to reduce construction cost and to solve environmental problems as well as to enhance construction quality. In this aspect, this paper introduces a novel research field 'Geo-mechatronics', which stands for the convergence of geotechnical engineering and mechatronics (i.e. automation of mechanics using electronic technologies). Since the ground is ubiquitous in every infrastructure construction, the Geo-mechatronics research is crucial for the development of construction technology in the future. Moreover, it is believed to that the Geo-mechatronics research will make our construction industry to be more future-oriented and internationally comparative industry.

  • Robot-based layout automation has been recently promoted for the purpose of improving productivity and quality. Marking robots have various functional demands to secure marking precision and environmental adaptability. In particular, in order to automate marking work of building structure, correction of the marking line through position recognition of rebars placed is required. Because the rebars must maintain a constant cover thickness from the formwork surface, if the rebars are out of planned position, the rebar or marking line need to be corrected to secure the cover thickness. Thus, the marking robot for structural work needs to have the function for determining the position correction of the rebar or the marking line. In order to judge the correction of marking line, it is required to measure the distance between the planned marking line and the rebar placed. Therefore, this study proposes an algorithm that can measure the distance between the planned line and the rebar, and correct marking line for the automatic operation of the marking robot. The results of this study will be utilized as a core function for unmanned operation of the marking robot and contribute to securing precise marking by reflecting construction errors.

  • Complexity and Massive is the modem trend of construction project. The lack of timely and accurate construction data is the main cause for the lack productivity increases seen in other industries. Because information is essential in the construction production process, the lack of it will cause workers to stay idle, build the wrong thing that has to be redone, become involved in an accident or simply waste their time doing non-productive work. To aid construction automation and improve its productivity, RFID technology system should be developed. As a result of that, this study analyzes the status of RFID technologies in construction project and suggest advanced construction method. USN and RTLS system is analyzed in this study RFID system also can be used in construction management, material management, quality control, safety management and human resource management.

  • Since tunnel construction order was placed one by one, various sensors and actuators installed at the RTU and higher level system in each tunnel maintenance office had their own protocols depending on construction company. The TGMS testbed established on the extended region of Yong-dong Highway, for example, did not have consistent protocol between each automation levels and management levels without considering the functions and/or roles of each level. The management sever in each tunnel was simply networked to the TGMS server. Therefore, it is impossible to implement a new control algorithm as well as to integrate each other since each tunnel was constructed by different company. So, if the construction company is out of business, there is no way to maintain the corresponding tunnel effectively. In order to solve this problem, all the necessary standard protocols was established between automation level and management levels. These interface standards provide the clear classification between individual tunnel system and tunnel management system. So, even if construction company is different, its effect is minimized, so that it is expected to successfully establish PC based TGMS.

  • The former researches on earthwork automation were mainly focused on GPS and sensor application, environment modelling, equipment path planning, work information management, and remote control etc. Recently, reducing $CO_2$ emission becomes one of main focuses for an automation research. In the case of earthwork operations, many kinds of construction machines or robots are involved, which can cause high level of $CO_2$ in a construction site. An effective earthwork plan and construction machine operation can both increase productivity and safety and decrease $CO_2$ emission level. In this research, some automation concepts for green earthworks are suggested such as a 3D construction site model, a 3D earthwork distribution based on two different earthwork methods, and an earthwork package construction method. A excel-based simulator is developed to generate the 3D earthwork distribution and to estimate the level of $CO_2$ emission for the given earthwork.

  • This study proposed the basic data that contributes to inducing an effective construction plan through the application of the 4th industrial technology to construct a school building that can guarantee the five goals of construction management: cost, process, quality, safety, and environmental management. To this end, 3D printing, drones, robot automation, and augmented reality technologies that are highly usable in construction sites were identified for construction workers. As part of this, related literature and research data were investigated. The selected 4th industrial technology was investigated and analyzed on how it was used for cost, process, quality, safety, and environmental management in a detailed school construction process. As a result of the analysis, significant results were found for the application plan of the 4th industrial technology in school construction for cost, process, quality, safety, and environmental management.
