  • The azeotrope of methyl acetate methanol and water was isolated using extractive distillation with water as entrainer. The pressure-swing extractive distillation (PSED) process and vapor side-stream distillation column (VSDC) with the rectifier process were designed to separate the methyl acetate, methanol and water mixture. It was revealed that the VSDC with the rectifier process had a reduction in energy consumption than the PSED process. Four control schemes of the two process were investigated: Double temperature control scheme (CS1), $Q_R/F$ feedforward control of reboiler duty scheme for PESD (CS2), $Q_R/F$ feedback control scheme for VSDC (CS3), the feedback control scheme of sensitive plate temperature of side-drawing distillation column to dominate the compressor shaft speed (CS4). Feed flow and composition disturbance were used to evaluate the dynamic performance. As a result, CS4 is a preferable choice for separation of methyl acetate-methanol-water mixture. A control scheme combining the operating parameters of dynamic equipment with the control indicators of static equipment was proposed in this paper. It means using the sensitive plate temperature of side-drawing column to control the compressor shaft speed. This is a new control scheme for extractive distillation.

  • A finite element scheme is considered for the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation with the nonconstant gradient energy coefficient. The scheme inherits energy decay property and mass conservation as for the classical solution. We obtain the corresponding error estimate using the extended Lax-Richtmyer equivalence theorem.

  • This study intended to the optimal conservation method and to make an application scheme for the fossil locality of the Quaternary Hamori Formation at the northeastern coast of Mt. Songak. Many kinds of innumerable fossils are found from the Hamori Formation in the study area: Footprints of hominid, trace fossils of invertebrates, bird, artiodactyla, proboscidea, carnivores, unclassified footprints, and body fossils (arthropoda, gastropoda, mollusca, and plants). The formation has been outcropped and eroded out with innumerous fossils by the strong wave action of storm and typhoon. Korean government recognized the dangerous situation of the important fossils and decided to conserve the formation for the national heritage. Method D1 (conservation hall or museum on the fossil locality) may be the best way to protect the fossil locality from all the natural activities and to do the research, exhibition, education, and sightseeing together. The application of the geologic materials from the fossil locality should preferentially focus on the collection and research which should be accompanied by exhibition, education, and sightseeing. The application scheme may be stepped into three stages during 10 years: (1) systematic conservation and publicity during 2005-2007, (2) establishment of wellorganized museum during 2008-2010, and (3) international museum with the optimized roles 2011-2014.

  • Central schemes offer a simple and versatile approach for computing approximate solutions of nonlinear systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. However, there are large numerical dissipation in case of contact discontinuity. We study semi-discrete central upwind scheme by changing flux functions to reduce the numerical dissipation and we perform numerical computations for various problems in case of contact discontinuity.

  • In this paper, a numerical scheme is introduced to solve the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional hyperbolic equations. The mesh points of the proposed scheme are distributed along characteristics so that the solution on the stencil can be easily and accurately computed. This is very important in reducing errors of the scheme because many numerical errors are generated when the solution is estimated over grid points. In addition, when characteristics intersect, the proposed scheme combines corresponding grid points into one and assigns new characteristic to the point in order to improve computational efficiency. Numerical experiments on the inviscid Burgers' equation have been presented.

  • An efficient correction storage scheme on a structured grid is applied to a sequence of approximate Jacobian systems arising at each time step from a linearization of the discrete nonlenear system of equations, obtained by the implicit time discretization of the conservation laws for unsteady fluid flows. The contribution of freezing the Jacobian matrix to computing costs is investigated within the correction storage scheme. The performance of the procedure is exhibited by measuring CPU time required to obtain a fully developed laminar vortex shedding flow past a circular cylinder, and is compared with that of a collective iterative method on a single grid. In addition, some computed results of the flow are presented in terms of some functionals along with measured data. The computational test shows that the computing costs may be saved in favor of the correction storage scheme with the frozen Jacobian matrix, to a great extent.

  • In this paper, we approximate the solution of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations by using a fully discrete finite element scheme based on the standard Galerkin method in space and implicit midpoint discretization in time. The proposed scheme guarantees the conservation of the total mass and the energy. First, a priori error estimates for the fully discrete Galerkin method is derived. Second, the existence of the approximated solution is proved by virtue of the Brouwer fixed point theorem. Moreover, the uniqueness of the solution is shown. Finally, convergence orders of the fully discrete Crank-Nicolson scheme are discussed. The end of the paper is devoted to some numerical experiments.

  • We present a 4-parameter implicit Lagrangean code which satisfies conservation of mass, linear and angular momenta, energy and entropy simultaneously. The primary advantage of this scheme is possibility to control dissipative properties of the scheme avoiding the effects of numerical viscosity.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the functions of prefrontal lobe on the formation of conservation scheme of elementary students. In this study, 107 students of 4th to 6th grades were selected from the elementary school in Seoul area. As to the research,4 items for conservation logic test from GALT test sheet were used. The planning ability, inhibiting ability and reasoning ability were measured for the prefrontal lobe functions. About 30% of 4-6 grade students did not have volume conservation logic skills. The formation of conservations was not linear. Inhibiting ability was significantly different in level of conservation. And, conservation logic skills were significantly correlated with cognitive variables. Reasoning ability was significantly explained about 10% of the conservation logic in 4-6 grades.

  • A fundamental study for the numerical scheme to simulate unsteady nonlinear waves by solving Euler equations is presented. First a conservation form and a non-conservation form of the Euler equations with a free surface fitted coordinate system are compared. Next, a time splitting fractional step method and an alternating direction implicit(ADI) method for the time integration are compared. For the comparative study, flow calculations around a bottom bump in a channel and a NACA 0012 hydrofoil in a flume are performed. The results show that the ADI method with a third order upwind differencing scheme is very efficient in reducing the computing time with keeping the accuracy, And, there is no distinct difference between two expression forms except that the non-conservative form shows faster wave propagating velocity than the conservation form. Some results are compared with experiments and show good agreement.
