FEM Analysis of a Waterproof Seal of Automotive Electrical Connectors (자동차 전장 커넥터 방수 시일의 유한요소해석)

  • In the case of high-voltage connectors applied to automobiles, waterproofing has become an important issue for the safety of automobiles. In this study, structural analysis is performed on silicone rubber-type waterproof seals used in the voltage connector. For the structural analysis, the tensile properties of the actual rubber seal are evaluated using a miniaturized tensile testing machine. The Mooney-Rivlin material constants of the rubber seal are determined as follows; $D_1=0$, $C_{01}=0.241$, $C_{10}=0.0142$. The analysis shows that the contact pressure at the top of the seal where the seal and male connector are in contact is approximately three times higher than that at the bottom of the seal where the seal and female connector are in contact. It is confirmed that the waterproofing performance of the rubber seal depends on the contact pressure of the seal bottom where the seal and female connector are in contact. The contact pressure for waterproofing is found to be 4.7 bar. The strain concentration of the curved part is attributed to excessive initial tension. Therefore, a redesign is recommended for uniform stress or strain distribution in the curved section of the seal in response to the stress relaxation problem due to permanent deformation.

  • In this paper, a quality inspection system was developed to identify the defective assembly of connectors used in automobile wiring. For waterproof connectors, an internal seal must be inserted for waterproofing. However, there are cases where it is omitted or double-inserted during production. An automatic inspection jig was designed using photosensors and touch switches to classify good and bad connector components. In the case of the existing visual inspection, 6,400 connectors were inspected when 5 people inspected for 8 hours. However, when using the inspection jig developed under the same conditions, 20,000 pieces were inspected. In other words, the productivity is greatly improved compared to the conventional visual inspection.

  • In CNG (Compressed natural gas) fuel supply line, whose main components are receptacle and check valve are used to charge high pressure gas to the tank of NGV (Natural gas vehicle). It is reported that the seal is separated occasionally form valve seat and results in blockage of gas flow. In this paper, MARC is used to investigate the reasons of seal separation and suggest design improvements. The static gas pressure distributions acting on the seal which calculated using FLUENT are considered to investigate accurate seal deformation behaviors. Deformed seal shapes are obtained for various amounts of seal interference and its location, gas pressure distributions and Young's modulus of the rubber used. The results showed that the reasons of seal separation problems are verified theoretically, and suggested examples of new design method. Therefore the present numerical methods can be applied in designing and performance analysis of rubber seals adopted in high pressure fluid machineries.

  • Silicone rubber wire seals are widely used in automotive connector systems for waterproofing and so on. The purpose of this paper is to predict and evaluate the sealing performance of wire seals using finite element analysis. The material properties of the rubber seals were determined by the curve fitting of uniaxial tensile test and equibiaxial tensile test data. The response surface method was used to determine the optimum shape of the wire seal. In order to verify the accuracy and reliability of the simulations on the deformation prediction of wire seals, experiments were also carried out.

  • This paper is a purpose to Analyze and study the failure examples for a engine oil leakage of camshaft bearing seal, poor contact by computer connector fin damage and vaporizer inferiority on LPG automotive. The first example, when the researcher disassembled the cylinder head of engine to establish the cause for oil leakage, he confirmed the engine oil leakage by damaged between the engine intake camshaft bearing and seal part. The second example, the connector fin of power source line that control the starting of a car supplied with engine computer. As a result, it found the fact that the engine operation stopped because of cutting of the power source by connector fin damage. The third example, it verified the engine incongruity phe cutting of the power source by connector fin damage. The third example, it verified the engine incongruity phenomenon as thd gas didn't flow the vaporizer by foreign substance deposit. Finally, it supplied a small quantity gas from vaporizer to mix. As the computer controlling mix opening condition supplied a air as opening signal, the air and fuel became rarefied state. it knew that the engine didn't produce prpper power. Therefore, a car have to throughtly inspect not in order to arise the failure symptoms.

Optimization Design of a Waterproof Seal Cross-Section of Automotive Electrical Connectors (자동차 전장 커넥터 방수시일 단면의 최적설계)

  • Recently, the waterproofing performance of high-voltage connectors in automotive vehicles has attracted increased interest. In this study, an optimal cross-sectional shape was derived to obtain uniform contact pressure and strain by considering stress relaxation problems caused by initial tension when mounting a seal. A high strain of 52.1 was distributed in the round region, owing to excessive initial tension. The finite element method (FEM) analysis indicated that the strain corresponding to the optimal initial tensile was 11. We adopted six design factors to optimize the seal cross-section and three factors as the main design factors. An orthogonal arrangement table was prepared using Minitab. FEM analyses of 16 study models were conducted to determine the optimized model. The contact pressure of the optimization model is the most evenly distributed while satisfying the waterproof performance of 0.47 MPa. Compared to the initial model, the difference in strain decreases from 35.5% to 19.6%. Finally, the derived cross-sectional shape can reduce the strain of the round region by 33.8% and the differences in the contact pressure at the upper and lower surfaces by 42% and 76%, respectively.

  • Automotive waterproof connectors are highly functional parts that must be air-tight in a complex environment. In the LSR multi-cavity injection molding process for manufacturing waterproof connectors, it is important to maintain a uniform curing temperature between the cavities in order to obtain a quality product. For this purpose, we designed the capacity of the cartridge heater differently for each position, and then linked the heat transfer analysis and optimization module to obtain the optimal cartridge heater capacity. As a result of the optimization analysis, the temperature deviation between cavities was decreased from $13.1^{\circ}C$ to $8.1^{\circ}C$ compared with the case in which constant heater capacity was applied, so that the design criterion could be satisfied within a temperature deviation of $10^{\circ}C$ for uniform curing. This study suggests that this method can be applied efficiently to the design of a large area multi-cavity LSR mold heater.
